I'm not naming the shop, but this morning, I went into a big high street retailer to collect a click and collect order and whilst I was there, I had a look around and picked up a few more things.

Went to till, total came to over £150, all fine, sales assistant asked if they could have my email address for the receipt. I said, no thanks, a paper receipt is fine thanks, she said, sorry we don't do paper receipts, we need to have your email address to provide that. I looked at her and said I had never come across any other retailer doing that, but she stood her ground and said in an assertive tone, I need your email address. Again I refused and said, if that's the case, I'll just leave it and walked away. Last time I gave a retailer my email in store, I was bombarded with daily emails, despite unsubscribing via the link at every email received.

WIBU to have walked away as I didn't want to hand over my personal data? Driving home, I did think about creating a separate email account for this reason, but then again, why should I? surely my preferences should be respected.

Not where I worked!

If we didn’t upsell whatever the item was that week, we could get more than “talked” to. We could find ourselves on a disciplinary if it continued.

Staff hated doing it as much as the customer did but I’d rather have kept my job than lose it because somebody couldn’t even make a fake email address.

I feel sorry for retail staff.

I feel sorry for retail staff.
Yes, me too. They are getting the worse end of this ridiculous corporate practice.

Littleredgoat · 12/08/2025 15:39

Just tell them "it's part of my bail conditions I'm not allowed access to email"

dynamiccactus · 12/08/2025 15:43

In most cases you won't need the receipt for a possible return so you can cheerfully tell them you don't need one - paper or email. If you pay by card, you can use your bank/credit card statement/app as proof of purchase.

So the only time you need a receipt is if you are paying by cash for something that you might conceivably want to take back (or if they have officious security guards sniffing around). And in the latter case I would absolutely insist on a paper one.

If you don't want to give your email address walking out is the right thing to do. They may get the message. Or they won't but you can spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere.

NoSoupForU · 12/08/2025 15:43

I know I'm missing the point here but if you did click and collect then Dunelm already have your email address so were you not being a tad dramatic?

That said, I dislike the insistence on email receipts.

Yeah I’ve had this in New Look and always refuse. Last time I had the sales assistant do a little head tilt and tell me if I was aware that I would not be able to return items if I lost my paper receipt? Which is also nonsense by the way, and I know that having worked it retail. I hate that we have to give out reams of information to just buy so much as a pair of socks these days-it’s exhausting.

Also it's so time-consuming and leads to much longer queues.

Take item, scan item, take money, pack and say thanks. Done. No long conversations, upsales etc. We're all busy people!

But they must make money out of the upsales or they wouldn't do it as we all apparently hate it, but there must be enough of us who agree to buy the perfume or whatever it is they are upselling (thinking of Superdrug).

Surely if you did a click and collect they already have your email address because they use that to confirm collection time? Surely giving the address for your receipt wouldn’t be that big of a deal and result is many more emails that you would’ve got (do to click and collect)

That aside though I prefer email receipts because they’re not going to let misplaced or thrown away, they are always there if I need to return an item and it’s not wasting paper that can’t be recycled.

I head tilt, sympathetic apologetic cooing, I’m so so sorry, I don’t have an email address. Hard stare. I always get a paper one,

I’d give you a sympathetic look back and say ‘Ahhh you getting forgetful my love? It’s a click and collect order, you needed an email to make the purchase. We then emailed you to say it’s ready - that’s literally why you’re standing here you silly billy!’

I recently bought a windscreen wiper blade from Halfords. Was asked for email first and then my car registration which I thought was strange. I queried it and was told they "needed" it to sell me the blade which sounded like a load of nonsense to me. I checked if my car reg would flag up something on their system showing that it was the correct one for my car - as I was trying to understand why they would need it. The person looked at me like |I was crazy and said no with a sigh. Within a few minutes an email came through with a customer satisfaction questionnaire which I promptly filled in complaining about having to give all this ridiculous info.

Sounds like WH Sith saying they "needed" your flight boarding pass to sell you things like sweets and newspapers at airports (ie non duty free items). Bollox but they get away with it because they say it's part of the contract with them.

purplecorkheart · 12/08/2025 14:18

Doesn't seem to be such an issue in Ireland or certainly in my experience. There are a few stores that ask for your email but also offer a paper version without prompting.

It's not really an issue in the UK either, it's just these particular shops that take the proverbial.

dynamiccactus · 12/08/2025 15:56

Aspanielstolemysanity · 12/08/2025 14:52

Well at least it's saved you spending £150 on stuff you clearly didn't need. So better for the planet and your wallet.
We spent last week at the coast and seeing all the huge container ships bringing crap from around the world for people to mindlessly buy has strengthened my view that reducing consumption is the best thing we can all do for the planet

Agreed.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 12/08/2025 15:24

I also refuse, it’s nonsense. And they can definitely give paper receipts, but they get targeted on email receipts, signing up to mailing lists, so they pretend you can’t.

I have no interest in helping a sales assistant meet nonsense targets; I don’t want spammed with any more shit. Always ask for paper, I’d leave it too if they pretended they couldn’t, and send a complaint off naming the staff member. But I’ve found they always back down, and print one, even if some will glare while doing so.

Edited

I love customers like you
NOT!

dynamiccactus · 12/08/2025 15:58

How can you be disciplined for people refusing an upsale? I can understand if you don't ask at all but you can't be responsible for the fact that people eg don't like or use perfume.

I also think the loyalty card pricing is a scam. If you have a loyalty card you get the normal price, not a discounted price and people without the card have to pay a penalty price.

I’ll name as people making a valid point. Yes it was Dunelm.

I once gave Dunelm my email address for a receipt. Receipt never arrived! I did wonder if they mistyped it on purpose so I couldn't return the item. I went back in to the store to ask for a paper copy in case I wanted to return the item (duvet cover which was a Christmas paper). The member of staff said that she couldn't look it up but they would look it up if I wanted to return the item. I always insist on a paper receipt now!

MaidOfSteel · 12/08/2025 16:00

Boredlass · 12/08/2025 12:30

Fine to do that but don’t expect to be able to return anything. I’ve never noticed more spam after doing this

It’s naive to think this whole email receipt business is about saving paper. It’s not. It’s all about making more marketing opportunities. Good on you, OP. I’ll do exactly the same if it happens to me.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/08/2025 16:01

It’s like it’s 1999 with all these reactions. What’s the issue with them having your email address? I buy stuff from Next, M&S, John Lewis, Amazon, ASOS, PLT, SHEIN, Net a Porter, B&Q, ScrewFix, Look Fantastic, Smyths, Boots, Dunelm, New Look, River Island, Ryan Air, EasyJet, Virgin and a gazillion other online retailers regularly. They all have my email address and have done for about 20 years. As yet I’ve not been victim to some scam or fraudulent goings on.

If some get over zealous with their marketing emails I just unsubscribe.

Any emails that are shit, go straight in to my junk.

I just can’t see the big deal. I presume you didn’t actually need anything in the Dunelm order? If you needed a BBQ, paddling pool and washing line for the nice weather tomorrow, I guess your husband might be a bit peed off.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 12/08/2025 16:01

Not unreasonable at all and the sales assistant I think is incorrect to insist on no paper receipts. I've had it in New Look too. Probs just a misunderstanding from her on the training side. If I'd really wanted the stuff I'd have asked for a manager to explain the policy to me/ the assistant but I wouldn't have given my email address either and I get proper pissed off stood waiting in a queue while people spell out ludicrous email addresses.

You certainly need your receipt for a refund where I work, we don’t accept bank/credit card statements as proof of purchase.

But not with click and collect orders. They will have all that info on their system, as well as your billing address and bank details.

Boomer55 · 12/08/2025 16:04

I have a separate email for receipts. I just clear off the spam regularly.

Searingtheserum · 12/08/2025 16:05

To all those who are disgruntled, yes I get it, but unless you make a fuss higher up, or on their socials thats visible and affects them, the shop worker won't gaf, why would they? Hassle the higher ups, email them and tell them you are actively avoiding shopping there, and indeed in ops case walking out otherwise what's the point?

itsgettingweird · 12/08/2025 16:05

Waffleswithhothoney · 12/08/2025 12:43

I had the same in New Look, sale item under £10 and I never shop in there so didn’t want to be on their mailing list. The assistant had already taken my money (cash) and then asked for the email. I said ‘paper receipt please’ and she refused and said that I must provide an email and not in a very polite way. We went back and forward for a couple of minutes and then I asked for a refund instead. Funnily enough at that point a paper receipt popped out of the printer. But I won’t be back.

This happened to me in New look and when I said refund me the sales assistant tried to say I’d need a receipt first so needed to give my email address.

I asked for the manager who said I needed proof of purchase.

I said I’m no genius but surely my transaction being there in the screen saying I’ve paid id proof I’d paid?!

Out popped a paper receipt. This was 3 years ago and I’ve not shopped there since!

I actually don’t have an issue with giving email and have always unsubscribed but it was the way the sales assistant spoke to me about needing it that was my issue.

DolphinOnASkateboard · 12/08/2025 16:07

I'm not crazy about rattling off my email address, including my difficult-to-spell surname, in front of a queue of strangers. Hence I have a whole extra gmail for such situations.
