To be appalled at Catherine Zeta-Jones' face?

We've been waiting to watch season two of Wednesday and when we saw it today we were all really shocked at the state of CZJ's face. My children struggled to recognise her!
She's obviously had a facelift between S1 and S2, but it was really badly done. Her lips are all stretched out and her eyes are pulled up to her hairline. She looks like she is heading into Jocelyn Wildenstein territory.
It's really sad, because she was always such a pretty woman and it was good to see an older woman (not 20-something) looking amazing in a TV show.

That sounds scary, but I wonder what proportion of procedures end up with problems like that. You would be scared if you watched Botched! I'm not in the market for it, anyway, but I don't blame people who are.

I have dire health issues which stole my attractiveness prematurely. I now look very haggard and quite ugly in comparison. I've overheard conversations where people asked each other if I'm ten years older than I am ( yes, absolute terrors).

I can't describe how free and quite amazing I now feel about myself with all this. I don't go on SM, I don't post pictures, I'm long term single by choice. I'm not subject to constant scrutiny so my unattractiveness doesn't really matter.

It's really unfair because it's the above that drives women to do weird things to their face. And I get annoyed when I see these morphed faces ( Zeta looks ok to me in pics I've seen). I wonder what makes me so annoyed about the weird pillow, frozen face look. I'm not sure on the very real reason tbh for being triggered. It is not jealousy.

It feels quite false to criticise OP so much for an observation she's made about someone looking unsettlingly not themselves because ofcosmetic surgery. It is unsettling.

About 2 to 5% risk of serious complications. Too high imo for vanity.

I agree. She's talented and driven. When she was young she was staggeringly beautiful. As we get older that changes, as is normal.

It's not unkind to wish CZJ lived in a world that admired women as they got older. It's not unkind to wish she didn't need to go under the knife to stay acceptable. It's not unkind to wish she could love and appreciated herself as she was without medical intervention.

I wish nothing but good for her - she's a remarkable performer. But I am sad that she lives in a society that doesn't value her as she is.

I read a story yesterday about a teacher who died as a result of hair transplant surgery in Turkey. I wondered how many fuck ups there were. Horrible.

Saw a picture of her in the paper, and thought the same.
Not just her though, plenty of Hollywood actors get work done.

The OP is right, her face has been messed with and she doesn't look good- it is distracting. I feel the same about Kristen Davies were her face is so over done it looks distracting.

This is not an insult its a recognition that these people are in a dangerous bubble.

I love CZJ and I think she's easily the most gorgeous actress since Kathleen Turner at her peak. And I still don't think it's bad for people to say "I wish she hadn't distorted her face with the eyelift and the copious injectables that make her look more like everyone else who fell face-first in a vat of Botox." She is still unthinkably beautiful, but not as beautiful as she would be if she were allowed to age naturally. The pressure she is under to do this is something likely none of us here could grasp.

However, she was not the best Jones to play Morticia. That would be Carolyn Jones. Mind you, that is largely the fault of the conceptualisation of Wednesday as generic teen angst. The script is fucking dreadful.

It looks like they have covered over or shaved off her real eyebrows and drawn new ones. It also looks like they've maybe used tape on her eyes, which is hidden by the wig. They've brought the lipstick out beyond her lips. I think that her appearance is more to do with the costume departments vision for morticia than any personal decisions that Catherine zeta Jones made.

These arguments make no sense. The OP doesn't make a living by choosing to put her face on international media, but CZJ. Therefore it is perfectly within the range of normal behaviour to notice when someone has had so much work she looks unnatural.

The show probably isn't a real representation as she will have tape/lots of make up.

I read this as appaulled at whats been done to her face considering how stunning she is.

This is women standing together and pushing back against this ridiculous standard that a woman in her 50's is less attractrive than a woman in her 20s.

Too many attractive women ruin their faces with fillers, Botox and surgeries. It must be hard for a beautiful celebrity to come to terms with losing their beauty and getting old. CZJ still looks good though. Here’s praying she won’t do a Katie Price with the facial disfigurement.

I think standing together means growing old without the pressure to make yourself look younger.

I think the work Wednesday has done is scarier as she is so young.

I agree with your key points here; while I can see the temptation of cosmetic work and particularly why Hollywood stars often feel compelled to get it, it’s completely ok to be uncomfortable with this and observe or note when it does happen.

I didn’t read the OP as being unpleasant especially - I thought it was more of a natural shock response. I agree with others who’ve said it’s natural to comment when someone has obviously had a lot of work done, as this can create an unsettling and often uncanny appearance which sits uncomfortably with us as humans I think. I feel that comments about people looking great after cosmetic work are often false kindnesses - in a world where women’s looks are constantly scrutinised, it may seem like it’s simplifying things and closing down negativity to refuse to speak in anything but positive terms about it. Nonetheless, this to some extent perpetuates an environment in which cosmetic work is normalised, and is therefore damaging in itself.

The few comments implying jealousy miss these nuances, I think, and are part of that culture of only speaking positively about women’s looks as a response to the scrutiny that women are subject to. I understand this completely, but I do feel that we need to be able to discuss these things with more subtlety if we’re to be able to think critically about why cosmetic work is becoming more common and the potential implications of this.
