Tradesperson has been in the loo 15 mins +

I’m having a difficult morning and feel totally stressed out. We’re having some work done and this has added to the worry - context being that I’m on edge generally. But AIBU to think it’s odd / unreasonable for a tradesperson to nip to the loo (didn’t ask, but I’d have been absolutely fine with them using it) but not emerge for more than 15 mins. This is the downstairs loo leading into our hallway. Totally get that when you’ve got to go you’ve got to go - but surely you’re bloody quick about it if it’s in someone else’s home and you’ve never met them. At what point do I gently knock? Semi-light hearted, horribly stressed out working mum!

BTW I also have bad bowel issues so I get some of the possible context and causes - but I manage my condition so that flares are sorted at home in the main.

My DH, my brothers, one of my brothers in law, all tradesmen, I find it really upsetting to think they'd be in someone's house and have the person think/ say things like this about them. Monitoring their toilet usage? Expecting them to ask to use the toilet? In what professional role would this ever be expected? They're adults and professionals, and working in your home which they're well aware has to be respected. Please imagine it was your husband, and his employer was timing his toilet breaks, speculating on the internet about his stomach, complaining that he hadn't asked to use the toilet.

And if the poor man is sick, he did at least try to get on with his work. My brother once went to work in the morning not feeling well and had to come straight home cause he'd been sick as soon as he got out of the van. He was like 20, and Mum had told him to take the day off, but he was worried about letting people down. I don't know, they work so hard, they do sometimes work when they shouldn't, but they should get some credit for that too, shouldn't they? It's horrible to read people fixating on germs or the "billable hours". I hope my DH and brothers work for nicer people!

@Tiredandtiredagain I agree with you.

Exactly this!

But rest assured the world isn’t full of distrusting people who don’t appreciate work being done!

Wow!

You’re still defending your empathetic view, oh well maybe one day you’ll understand it’s not just that simple?

Time will tell …

I’ve read your comments, due to there being so many of them.I understand the meaning of empathy, how can you possibly know what l’ve been through.
All you’re doing is pushing your opinion, forcibly onto other’s, it’s obvious only your opinion matters, if other’s, put their’s across, you disagree with, you get nasty.
That’s far from showing empathy, wishing people get health conditions, because in your opinion, how could they possibly understand. Many people have got health conditions, visible, or not, point being, empathy works both ways.If you were an empathetic person you wouldn’t be reacting this way.

I’ve clearly hit a nerve, haven’t I?

However saying

get a different career

use outside toilets, there are plenty

Doesn’t show any empathy, but thank you for letting me know you have empathy, it wasn’t apparent.

Put a phone signal blocker in there, i wonder how long he'd be then

oviraptor21 · 06/08/2025 16:16

I'm surprised that so many people think it's normal to be in a toilet for 15 minutes. Far from being 'obsessed' the OP was right to be concerned. As it is, it's more than likely he was on his phone in there.

Blueyrocks · 06/08/2025 16:19

Honestly, some of you need to ask yourselves how you'd feel if it was your husband, or you yourself, being thought of like this. The average tradesman is not sitting in your bathroom scrolling his phone for half an hour.

He's at work, and he has to finish the job, however long he sits in your bathroom (and some of you loons actually take the toilet paper out before workmen arrive, what the fuckkkk??) I can guarantee you he'd rather get his work done and go home! Your bathroom may be lovely but it's not as nice as his living room and a cold beer.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/08/2025 16:21

Thinking about it, I reckon he did a “ghostie” and it confused him.

More than likely?

How do you know that? Or even think that?

He went back in again, so he’s not got an issue or a bug, he was back on his phone?

I don't know why you were obsessing in the first place?

Perhaps for fear that he might have passed away in there (it has happened before) and ending up with a haunted loo?

Velmy · 06/08/2025 16:59

My goodness, can't a tradie nip to the loo for a quick line of Peruvian flake in peace anymore? 😂

Blueyrocks · 06/08/2025 17:16

I just asked my DH about this - has he ever been told he's not allowed to use the toilet and has to leave and find a cafe when he's working at someone's home? He said it happened once, and the woman lived alone and was really anxious and weird about loads of things - also specified the cup he could use for tea and coffee, and was always really embarrassed / nervous when he spoke to her, and her house was creepy clean and tidy. He said it was fine going to a cafe, especially as it was clear she didn't want him using her cups etc, either and he felt really sorry for her and thinks she probably had health anxiety or something.

I didn't ask if anyone has ever told him he's spent too long in the bathroom at work, because even asking that question seems too much of an invasion of privacy, even for me, his wife. Maybe some of you have very different boundaries.

That could go one of two ways..job gets done quicker
Or yap your ears off in minute detail on how the work is going to be done.👀👀

No, you’re just goading and clearing have too much time on your hands, won’t let it go.It’s just getting ridiculous, how invested you are in this thread, not just sending your goady comments to me, but also to others.
Keep it up, clearly it makes you feel better, however l won’t be taking the bait🙄so you can continue with whatever this is.

Greet, I’ve made my point,

You’ve clearly got as much time as me and time to agree with other posters about me.

Let’s hope you’re never in the position to need to use the toilet in a rush in someone else’s property.

@Justchilling07 just fyi

@Tiredandtiredagain is currently undergoing chemo, not an excuse, but some empathy for some of her replies wouldn't go amiss?

It is after all a ridiculous thread, isn't it? Certainly not life threatening!

Thank but my view is the same whatever!

Before I was diagnosed with cancer, I would have still said the same thing. Empathy for people who have illness and trying to manage that.

My current chemo whilst causing various issues, including Diarrhoea and constipation is not relevant to what I posted.

Yes we say at the point of booking. I lock it as well just in case but it’s always been fine . I know it’s 100% my problem but I don’t want to end up having a meltdown and being ill for days and days so it’s just something I have to do

You said you only allow family to use your toilet, does that mean any friends who visit are told to go down the roads to the shops/cafes top?

beetr00 · 06/08/2025 19:07

@Justchilling07 "l don’t need to be lectured by you as well"

I'm sorry you felt that, it was certainly not my motivation.

He's probably doing lines off your cistern as well

Or counting his tax dodging cash payments.

OP, you make me SOOO glad I dont have to work in other people houses. The public really are nightmares
