Tradesperson has been in the loo 15 mins +

I’m having a difficult morning and feel totally stressed out. We’re having some work done and this has added to the worry - context being that I’m on edge generally. But AIBU to think it’s odd / unreasonable for a tradesperson to nip to the loo (didn’t ask, but I’d have been absolutely fine with them using it) but not emerge for more than 15 mins. This is the downstairs loo leading into our hallway. Totally get that when you’ve got to go you’ve got to go - but surely you’re bloody quick about it if it’s in someone else’s home and you’ve never met them. At what point do I gently knock? Semi-light hearted, horribly stressed out working mum!

BTW I also have bad bowel issues so I get some of the possible context and causes - but I manage my condition so that flares are sorted at home in the main.

I’d say that it’s “women” who are obsessed with toilet habits on MN and not women.

Edited

No, it’s definitely women

This is obviously a you issue you have to realise not letting someone use your toilet is an unhealthy attitude to have.

It’s healthy for me i need to avoid potential MH issues and it’s a trigger . I just can’t cope with it so we arrange facilities for longer building works etc or direct people to very nearby facilities. I just can’t cope with smells / germs

Probably because 9/10 when a man messes up a toilet it’s a woman left having to clean it up after they’ve made a quick exit

caringcarer · 06/08/2025 12:27

I think some men do take a long time to poo. No idea why. Maybe he was on his phone.

I never believe these threads. They come up far too often and so many women are obsessed with the toilet habits of other people. It's weird.

There has been an influx of these sort of threads recently, probably from bored kids on their school holidays.

Thanksman · 06/08/2025 12:35

Offer water next time, caffeine can cause prolonged use of the toilet!

Nearly50omg · 06/08/2025 12:36

builders etc ALWAYS shit in other people’s houses and stink their house out for days didn’t you know that?🤣

scalt · 06/08/2025 12:39

Have you checked that he hasn't stolen your knickers?

Mumsnet is pure batshit at the moment. And the whole "I don't like workmen using my toilet" is boring now. Ditto shoes off threads.

She also needs to set up a hidden camera and film him because it's "highly likely" he's not only stolen knickers but masturbated in her house. Then she'll have evidence to send to the police.
According to a poster on the "plumber nicked my knickers" thread.

Oh well bully for you being able to keep your bowel condition under control! It can’t be that serious then, can it?

My DP is a tradie and has suffered (and I mean suffered) with colitis for decades.

Thankfully for him, they’ve finally got a treatment that is working for him and largely keeps him under control, but the drugs don’t always work, and the body gets used to them.

He’s physically shat himself more times than you could imagine. Completely uncontrollable, no warning, nothing. Had occasions where that’s happened and he’s had to then go home and shower and change then set off again, for it to happen again. This is after already spending hours on the loo before work.

He will always ask to use the loo at a customers house if he really needs to use it, but yeah sometimes the poor guy has to have a shit!!

If he’d done it on your floor fair enough, but ffs don’t be so judgmental! Especially as someone who claims to have a bowel condition.

All these lucky people that can "manage" their condition or choose how long they can spend in the loo. The reality is that for most of us with bowel conditions, it's simply not possible. If he's had diahorrea, e.g. maybe he has opened the window wide, cleaning with bleach etc and waiting until he thinks it fit for someone else to use. God, I would hate it if I thought someone was standing outside the loo with a stopwatch.

Wow you’ve over elaborated there🤢Guess l’m lucky l’ve never had diarrhoea in a stranger’s bathroom
I think op’s quite miffed that he never asked first, that’s the issue.

I’m strictly shoes off in the house too why would anyone actively encourage bacteria all over their floors especially if you have for example a crawling baby ? I think it’s more batshit to have no basic hygiene standards

I can’t / don’t let anyone use the toilet in my home unless they are family. If we have work done that will take a while we arrange a portaloo type thing in front garden. If it’s a shorter work job I lock the toilet door from the outside while someone is here and say someone is unwell and in there if they ask, there are shops and a cafe with facilities less than 5 mins away

I sincerely hope you have the decency to make your awful regime clear before you agree people working in your home. I would never work for you.

I don't believe this is serious.

We had one that went for 20 minutes every morning so I do believe it.

What’s over elaborating?

You clearly are lucky, lots of people have bowel issues and suffer diarrhoea, as do people having chemo.

You’re missing the point.Completely agree with
@AllPlayedOut
lots of 'women’ post of here, as l’m sure you’re aware it’s an anonymous forum, anyone can post on here, including men.

DiscoBob · 06/08/2025 13:01

If it was your only bathroom and several people were contemplating having to release their bowels in the back garden, then fair enough to be annoyed.

If it's a downstairs loo that nobody 'needs' to use, then let him get on with it.

I hope he doesn't leave a mess. If he does tell him straight to go in a clean it up.

But if he's not finished then he's not finished.

I guess after about 30 mins if I heard no noise I might start thinking the poor fella had either accidentally OD'd or had a heart attack.

Give it time, someone will post that this bloke must be the other posters knicker grabber and is now knocking one out in OPs downstairs bog.

Talking about a trade person, having diarrhoea in a customer’s bathroom, is over elaborating.
If someone has a bowel condition, is it really the career for them, regularly going into strangers/customers homes. There’s lots of public toilets, especially when you’re driving.
This is more about that he didn’t ask first, which surely, is the professional thing to do.

user1498572889 · 06/08/2025 13:13

If he has stomach issues i would want him to piss off to his own home to go and not give me any of his dodgy stomach germs. I hope you have plenty of bleach.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 06/08/2025 09:49

I’m sat 2 metres from the loo (working in another room) - it’s hard not to notice. He emerged at the 20 minute mark so all is well 😆. Of course I have pretended not to notice and offered him another drink.

Or not working as you're too busy obsessing about a workies toilet habits 😂

I've elaborated because I have had to do that routine many a time. He's working there all day though. Why wouldn't he use the toilet there rather than driving off to a public toilet? (which there are not plenty of BTW certainly not in my town. In real life people let tradesman use their toilet and don't time them, it's only on MN that I've read such nonsense.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/08/2025 13:25

Knock on the door and ask him if he needs scissors OP.

Fourlovelychildren · 06/08/2025 13:30

Judiezones · 06/08/2025 11:45

Maybe it's his break and he likes to spend it on the lav with his phone. Maybe he's having a difficult poo. Unfortunate that it's on your toilet but if he's good at his job, overlook the toilet time. It's not forever and you can give it a good clean, if that's your worry.

A difficult poo! That’s tickled me. Absolutely love it. Golden. Going to use that from now on when explaining to DH where I’ve been (long term IBS sufferer)!
