To invoice a repairman?

Hi.

My DH took our car to a local handyman/mechanic who is a friend for some work needed. Basically tyre changes, oil changes, handbrake tightening etc

He kept the car for three days, and then when we returned it he gave us an invoice of £30 to cover "costs".

What "costs"? We supplied the tyres to him!

My husband paid him, but I'm fuming. He originally said he wouldn't charge for his labour, as we have known him for so long.

I have decided I am going to send him an invoice for keeping our car longer than he said he would, to reimburse us for having to get the bus into town when we should have been able to drive.

I know this is petty, but a point needs proving. You can't keep a car longer than you promise, and then invoice for a favour!!!!

I'm wondering if it's petty to invoice for more than £30, just to make a point?

My DH says no, and this will only cause trouble, but I'm not being a doormat for his dishonest mate.

What do you all think?

You're an idiot!

I thought so as well, but thinking about it I genuinely know a mum from the school run who I occasionally talk to who would probably do this. She talks about being sovereign, and not paying taxes/car insurance etc and is waiting for a court date for some fines for not paying them.

Oh dear, the judge will have a field day with her! 🙄

You really are a cockwomble 🤦🏻‍♀️

Bloody hell.
This is one of the most batshit things I’ve read in a long time.
Im hoping the original poster is just on a wind-up rather than someone needing actual psychiatric help.

Look, I'm gonna go. I'm trying to help, but if in just getting ridiculed then I'm off.

You're being ridiculed because you're being ridiculous.

I should have added the last time he did us a favour we DID give him a promissory note in advance!!! And it was a large one. I should have mentioned that in the OP but it adds valuable context.

I should have added the last time he did us a favour we DID give him a promissory note in advance!!!

So you gave him a "large" promissory note last time, and when he has asked you to come good on it with actual payment of £30, you've refused and just given him another promissory note for "next" time?

it's a good job this story is imaginary otherwise this poor guy would be fuming at this point!

Booboobagins · 31/07/2025 20:31

£30 is nothing. Mechanics are c£100 per hour!

I'd wind my ne k in but not give him my car for 3 days again, that's utter madness.

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly.

He promised to do this for free?

Assuming he meant free labour, not him paying for any little extras that may have been needed to complete the job. He's already doing you a favour, why should he be put of pocket as well?

mumofsixfluffs · 31/07/2025 20:32

I’m so glad you’re not my friend. That is not how you treat a friend. Jesus!!

Merryoldgoat · 31/07/2025 20:34

How is this thread still up? 🤣

Wessexfuntime · 31/07/2025 20:37

FFS, it is only £30 and he paid out on the other stuff, why should he be out of pocket, and that is no way to treat a friend.

RealLimeNewt · 31/07/2025 20:37

On what date will you be paying him the funds promised as per the promissory note?

I'm from the US and my question is she trying to pay with just a piece of paper and that is ok?

Planktonplank · 31/07/2025 20:43

I just tried to use a promissory note to buy a tinfoil hat in Asda but Pat on the till said she couldn't accept it and I had to pay cash or card instead.

Mandoidi · 31/07/2025 20:44

This is the same person as the receipt person yesterday, surely?

There is some places in England that is not worth working in they don't like paying money. She's probably pissed that she couldn't haggle the £30 and pay less or nothing as she would prefer.

It's a way to get out of paying. The poor bloke probably had enough of waiting and decided to send an invoice. I don't know how she has gotten away with it for so long. I bet a lot of businesses have shut their doors for good because of the op. I bet she don't accept notes of promise to pay in her line of business.

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 18:46

I will make my promissory note for £500 and I'll apologise to my husband. This wasn't an easy read, but the strength of the response...wow

He still needs to cover the costs for the parts you didn’t supply!! My garage charges £60 pound an hour labour charge so he’s done you a HUGE favour by doing it for free. He’s probably done it in his spare time after work / on his lunch. His working day is taken up by actual paying customers! I’d be hugely grateful that it only took 3 days & £30 quid! I’d be taking him a crate of beer along with his £50!!

I always find the comments on mumset so full of bitchiness and venom regardless of topic or who is wrong or right. You just don't see this on other forums. Maybe women really do deserve their reputation. Wow. And I'm a woman. Now I know why I always preferred men.

And I reckon this is them too. Similar message to yesterday

I’d like too see this carried out in Tescos!

I am astounded that people are still proffering advice when this is clearly a bait thread for a YT channel

As I’m a new member can you please tell me what I’m missing here?

Someone's trying to get themselves on the most AIBU thread currently running I think
