To invoice a repairman?

Hi.

My DH took our car to a local handyman/mechanic who is a friend for some work needed. Basically tyre changes, oil changes, handbrake tightening etc

He kept the car for three days, and then when we returned it he gave us an invoice of £30 to cover "costs".

What "costs"? We supplied the tyres to him!

My husband paid him, but I'm fuming. He originally said he wouldn't charge for his labour, as we have known him for so long.

I have decided I am going to send him an invoice for keeping our car longer than he said he would, to reimburse us for having to get the bus into town when we should have been able to drive.

I know this is petty, but a point needs proving. You can't keep a car longer than you promise, and then invoice for a favour!!!!

I'm wondering if it's petty to invoice for more than £30, just to make a point?

My DH says no, and this will only cause trouble, but I'm not being a doormat for his dishonest mate.

What do you all think?

I should have added the last time he did us a favour we DID give him a promissory note in advance!!! And it was a large one. I should have mentioned that in the OP but it adds valuable context.

Why are you giving him a promissory note if a) you've already paid him and b) it's thirty quid??

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 31/07/2025 18:52

Someone just learnt the term promissory note ....

So he knows he is fully paid for future work

I don't know what a promissory note is... I'm guessing pre-paying him for future work. Why not just pay him if/when you need work. I don't understand the need to pay in advance unless there's work to be done right now.

ThejoyofNC · 31/07/2025 18:55

What the hell is a promissory note?

What an absolute piss taker you are OP.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 31/07/2025 18:57

You piss about giving him a "promise of £500" and that will be the cost of the next work he does and he'll start charging you properly from then on

It's the same as cash. Cash is just "a promise to pay". It's what government expects us all to accept.

A promissory note, like cash, is just a guarantee I'll pay.

It's great that he only charged you a peppercorn sum when professionally he could charge hundreds. So be grateful. Invoicing him is absolutely preposterous as I think you now realise.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/07/2025 18:58

You sound batshit.
just don't go back for "favours"
p

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 31/07/2025 19:00

I hope your husband had the good sense to get his friend a good bottle of whisky or similar as actual recompense for the couple of hundred quid he's just saved you, and not some bullshit "promissory note".

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly.

He promised to do this for free?

He is probably charging you for oil and filters the work and his time is free, you have to try and get a hold of yourself.

Catsandcheese · 31/07/2025 19:02

Why don’t you just give him the £30?

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 31/07/2025 19:02

Why the hell are you banging on about promissory notes?

it’s not just like cash.

he’s already been paid.

why the need for a promissory note? Just pay him what it costs next time, why the hell are you giving him a promissory note now? Who even does that? I’ve never given or received a promissory note in my life. Most people haven’t.

Mrsttcno1 · 31/07/2025 19:02

God some people are beyond cheeky I can’t believe this is real OP, surely nobody is this much of an arsehole. Invoicing him for doing you a favour🤣🤣🤣🤣

legsekeven · 31/07/2025 19:03

Yes but cash is backed by the Bank of England. Your note is backed by your say so

So why not just give him cash?

who is going to enforce this promissory note? Who has the time for that?

and he’s already been paid anyway.

you sound absolutely nuts.

No!! When have the Bank of England ever given you gold?

Never!

Their paper is just a promise. Mine is every bit as good as theirs

My head is exploding at this. Especially when I’ve just been to the garage to pick up my car which cost £500. Should I have given the Ford garage a promissory note because it’s just the same as cash???
