To invoice a repairman?

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 18:21

Hi.

My DH took our car to a local handyman/mechanic who is a friend for some work needed. Basically tyre changes, oil changes, handbrake tightening etc

He kept the car for three days, and then when we returned it he gave us an invoice of £30 to cover "costs".

What "costs"? We supplied the tyres to him!

My husband paid him, but I'm fuming. He originally said he wouldn't charge for his labour, as we have known him for so long.

I have decided I am going to send him an invoice for keeping our car longer than he said he would, to reimburse us for having to get the bus into town when we should have been able to drive.

I know this is petty, but a point needs proving. You can't keep a car longer than you promise, and then invoice for a favour!!!!

I'm wondering if it's petty to invoice for more than £30, just to make a point?

My DH says no, and this will only cause trouble, but I'm not being a doormat for his dishonest mate.

What do you all think?

I've just spent an entertaining half hour or so in MR. Vobes's company, and here's a flavour -

Did someone earlier on say Freeman of the Land bollocks?!

Ooh I've only read the first few pages so far but have we got a freeman (or woman) of the land here? It seems so from the wibble about 'promissory notes'. I love the FOTL crowd, mad as a box of frogs the lot of them.

Catsandcheese · 31/07/2025 19:53

Not trying to derail but Scottish money is not legal tender but is generally accepted

Catsandcheese · 31/07/2025 19:55

Some of them fit the self checkout at Sainsbury’s though

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 31/07/2025 19:55

I’m going to eat a chocolate digestive every time I see the words ‘promissory’ and ‘note’

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 19:41

But .......
How LONG do the government take before they pay you your gold?

Think about that.

When you do, you'll realise there's no difference between their promises and mine

But there is isn’t there? The promise of an individual who may or may not be in a position to honour their promise versus the promise of a government bank responsible for the financial security of the entire country. If a currency fails it destroys the economy and affects millions of people. If you run out of money it affects you and anyone stupid enough to accept a promissory note from you. Where are all the checks and balances and regulations ensuring you will honour your promissory notes? You are an individual person who an hour ago wanted to charge someone for saving you hundreds of pounds. You’re not exactly looking like a good investment. You’re just looking arrogant and entitled, and frankly likely to just refuse to honor any promissory note and declare yourself bankrupt and lie and cheat your way out of it. You just don’t sound remotely honourable at all. I wouldn’t trust a promissory note from you and neither should anyone else. You’re not a genius who’s discovered an amazing way of writing your own money that everyone else should be doing too, you’re just a gullible, self serving egotist.

I always find the comments on mumset so full of bitchiness and venom regardless of topic or who is wrong or right. You just don't see this on other forums. Maybe women really do deserve their reputation. Wow. And I'm a woman. Now I know why I always preferred men.

MrsBlobby64 · 31/07/2025 19:58

Well you sound like a right bloody charmer! Pay the bloke in CASH! Nutter...

I'm a man. OP is batshit.

Or, more accurately, OP is Dickie Vorbes trying desperately to attract attention to his dumb YouTube channel.

Every time I refresh I'm expecting it 🤣

MN hid it a few minutes ago to review it, but here it is back again.

Horses7 · 31/07/2025 20:08

I’d like someone to do all that to my car for £30 - let me know his phone number please.
Be prepared to lose your friend and have to pay a lot more for repairs in future.

Ah I misses that!

Never seen a thread actually come back before 🤣

legsekeven · 31/07/2025 20:11

@mnhqif you leave this up I will personally write you a promissory note for £30

Falseknock · 31/07/2025 20:11

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 18:53

So he knows he is fully paid for future work

What car do you have?

ResidentPorker · 31/07/2025 20:13

Stop wanking around with promissory notes OP. You sound like one of those freeman of the land nutters. Just give him cash or a bank transfer - you know, money he can actually spend.

MaidMaryAnn · 31/07/2025 20:14

Ahahahahaha OMG op thanks for the laugh tonight!

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 18:33

Maybe I didn't express myself clearly.

He promised to do this for free?

He promised to do this for free?

I have no idea what question you are asking here, but that aside, why did you want it doing for free, and why did you accept his offer?

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 31/07/2025 20:16

Have just learnt about Freeman wankers though...

Account734 · 31/07/2025 20:16

Shazzabaz · 31/07/2025 19:01

It's not bull. It's EXACTLY what CASH is!!!

Sure it is, I've seen people paying for their groceries with promissory notes all the time. 🙄

Maverick66 · 31/07/2025 20:16

£30 for all that is practically free .
Out of interest do you have a salaried job?

Panama2 · 31/07/2025 20:18

A promissory note is not the same as cash it does promise to pay but must be worded properly. The government backing the cash we use is entirely different from you promising to pay unless you have the financial wherewithal of the government or Bank of England.

As an aside you do realise oil is far more expensive than petrol without the extras needed to service the car.

Fortunately her DP has already paid him in hard cash so no need for any of OP's promissory notes. Now he's setting up the parental controls on their internet so OP can't watch YT anymore before taking his mate down the pub to buy him a thank you drink.

This HAS to be a wind-up after this!

School holidays?

I thought so as well, but thinking about it I genuinely know a mum from the school run who I occasionally talk to who would probably do this. She talks about being sovereign, and not paying taxes/car insurance etc and is waiting for a court date for some fines for not paying them.

Purpleknickers · 31/07/2025 20:23

Wow cannot believe this is a an actual problem it’s batshit crazy and just a wind up
