Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

Strange how these bullying pile -ons happen on many threads then...

Have to say I’ve not seen one quite like this for a while 🤣

And you specifically talked about “this thread.” But now you’re saying the bullying pile ons happen on “many threads” so not sure why you’re surprised it’s happening on yours too then!

grumpygrape · 01/08/2025 14:06

Is this some sort of online masochism ?

That is your opinion, not fact

and I totally disagree with you.

Fair enough, we'll have to disagree then. Have a good weekend OP.

Mumsnet really needs to do something about the cesspit of bullying and nastiness that is on here
. It's disgusting. Its out of hand

I posted about a very serious life issue on mumsnet once and i was ridiculed and i was told that i was wallowing in misery.

I post about a minor issue on this thread, and again I am riduculed, and there is nasty post after nasty post, aftet nasty post.

I have seen the O.Ps on so many other threads on here, be trashed, abused and ridiculed.

And this is supposed to be an advice forum.

You don't see this on any other forum, only on mumsnet .

Why are you here if its that bad?

It's part of the Global Warming Agenda.

People are made to feel that they are "helping to stop global warming" by declining to take that small scrap of paper, or heaven forbid, buy a supermarket plastic bag.

I don't know what your comment replying to my post and quoting me upthread said, since it was in the middle of the night and was deleted for breaking talk guidlines before I saw it.

By the way, climate change is a very real threat, and anyone who doesn't believe that is misguided.

To be honest, you posted about a silly, insignificant issue and then proceeded to be rude to many people who responded. 🤷‍♀️ Perhaps this isn’t the place for you.

hear hear. OP your responses on here have been so baffling that you are surely just enjoying winding everyone up, I can't believe they are genuine

I work in a charity shop I always ask if customers want a receipt as we have no changing room so if they want a refund or exchange on clothing they have to have a receipt so I always explain this as not everyone realises a paper receipt is necessary

If anyone personally abuses me this morning. You will be reported.

Have a discussion without throwing insults.

Pot meet kettle

Love4both · 01/08/2025 20:09

If one uses a self service checkout they should be issued automatically not flash on a screen to press for getting a receipt with a count down starting at three seconds

It's at least 10 seconds and I still don't want one. The ones that do still issue them automatically without the option to say no are annoying.

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 15:42

And no its not my tone and nature. Lol. So ridiculous.

Its not the tone and nature of the OP on many threads.

Its the pile on of bullies onto many threads that cause the problems on every thread, as we all know very well

"Ridiculous" is the buzzword of Mumsnet

Mumsnet is the place to post about minor, trivi issues. It is a chat forum.

There are loads of threads on here about minor issues.

I mostly shop online. I use Tesco Express and they ask if you want a receipt and the local Nisa who only give a receipt if you ask.

How much shopping do you do to cause you this problem?

daffodilandtulip · 02/08/2025 08:20

I actually do often need a receipt for my business accounts. They look at you like you've got two heads if you actually say yes please though!

grumpygrape · 02/08/2025 08:57

Genuine question. If you pay by card (not by phone) how do you check your statements if you don't take receipts ?

Onelifeonly · 02/08/2025 09:08

Where are you that you aren't mostly using self check out? Though I live in London so likely it's more prevalent here. Went to a store I only go to rarely just yesterday and discovered they'd switched to self check outs, and many others have done so recently too. So with those you have to press a button to say whether you want a receipt or not.

And yes, it's a massive waste of paper and printing added up across all transactions. I'm trying to get out of my life time's habit of taking them....though they have their uses if you like to track spending as I do. (Bank account only tells you when and how much, not what you bought)

Edited

I don't. If my balance is suddenly a lot lower than expected I skim through to see if there's anything I don't recognise but I don't need to tick off every transaction.

My dad does. Gets his monthly bank statement in the post and ticks off every receipt against it. Makes my mum really nervous she's not going to get a receipt every time now and that she's going to get into trouble. SIL and I have both had to tell her multiple times she can always ask for one if it isn't offered. And told my dad to chill out.

In what kind of shop are there staff who would act like that, they don't care if you want the receipt, I find that almost impossible to believe

I guess it depends how often you buy things but when I look at my account I recognise all the transactions and in decades of having a bank account I've only once found something that wasn't right and I didn't need a receipt to resolve it
