Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

Genuine question. If you pay by card (not by phone) how do you check your statements if you don't take receipts ?

Edited

I don’t check them to that level of detail.
If I see a local coffee shop come up and I know I’ve been there that’s all okay. Unless the amount was for something outrageous I’d just consider it fine.

cyvguhb · 02/08/2025 10:24

In what kind of shop are there staff who would act like that, they don't care if you want the receipt, I find that almost impossible to believe

I find that in petrol stations all the time. For some reason the three petrol stations I use regularly hardly ever offer a full receipt, just sometimes a card receipt, and some of the staff appear quite irritated when I ask for one.

I use pay at pump so haven't been inside a petrol station for ages, I can safely say that the pump cares not a jot if you press yes or no when it asks if you want a receipt 😂

maryhinge88 · 02/08/2025 10:36

If you pay by Apple Pay you can keep a record of every transaction you’ve made.

Is that different to how your bank account shows every transactions, I don't pay by phone/have an iPhone so don't know what you can see. Does it itemise what you buy?

maryhinge88 · 02/08/2025 10:42

It just records each purchase you’ve made, how much and where from.

Pay at pump is great when it works, but the pumps at my local petrol station haven’t been able to dispense receipts for over a year now and you have to go inside to ask for one.

So the same information as the bank statement, I think the pp was wondering how people checked their statement info without the actual receipt to see if the amounts were the same.

I can only see that happening when you buy something from somewhere that the till and the card machine aren't connected and the seller types the amount into the machine, like a food truck or market stall but I don't know if those places would have till receipts anyway

I dont say yes to the receipt anyway as I get a notification from my bank app before I've even sat back down in the car so in the unlikely event that it want the amount on the pump I could go inside and get it checked

That’s fair, I think I just prefer to not think about everything I’ve bought 😂.

What are you on about "and other countries"

As i have already written , i never said that it didn't happen in other countries.

And it is not anything that "i have done", that is annoying peoppe.

I have seen the same kind of bullying pile - ons happen on so many threads on here.

Remember that the start of this thread, I even predicted exactly what the bullies would write. As it is the same on every thread.

And I predicted it exactly right.

You said It is only the UK that I have experienced this in.

I need receipts for my business expenses when I do my tax return so unfortunately I don’t have an alternative. The information on my bank app doesn’t show sufficient detail for HMRC.

Yes. I did.

Meaning, of the countries that I have lived in, I have only experienced it in the UK.

I didnt say that it doesnt happen in any other country in the world

But when people told you it happened in other countries, you didn't believe them.

But when people told you it happened in other countries, you didn't believe them.

Again, you are completely twisting my words into something that I didn't write.

I never "didn't believe' that it happened in other countries.

Posters came on here and said that they have been asked for receipts in France and other countries, and I never once wrote to them "I don't believe you'.

I know that it happens in other countries.

What i DID write is that I lived in Ireland fir all of last year, and I have gone back and visited Ireland every month this year, and I have never been asked "do i want a receipt" in Ireland yet.

You said "I dont think it happens in Ireland" after I told you its routine here. That is not saying that you've never experienced it, it's saying that you dont believe what I wrote.

You literally said “I don't thnk it happens in ireland” in your 2nd or 3rd post in response to someone saying it absolutely does happen where they are in Ireland. A bit like most of your responses, others are twisting your words and “bullying” but you are equally playing semantics with them. Your latest post is a prime example.

People have been a touch harsh, and there was one or two comments that crossed a line I believe, but the word bullying has been thrown around a lot for posts that mirror that of your own. One or two comments against your thoughts you should rightfully ignore, but when the majority of posts are saying it’s you, maybe take a step back and hold a mirror up for a bit of self reflection.

That isn’t an insult, that isn’t me bullying or being nasty, I’m trying to be helpful. When an audience is divided massively against your favout, it’s usually a good time to question why. You can have fun others can’t. You can swear others can’t. You can criticize others can’t. You can say people posts are ridiculous but when others do they are a bully - definitely a pattern to consider.

Rightly or wrongly, you don’t be able to win on this thread but keep calling others bullies, contradicting yourself and others, saying you are leaving the thread and then coming back is not going to help your cause for what you say is a lighthearted thread ….. it makes it not so lighthearted

"You won't be able to win on your thread".

Again you left out the words "in my opinion".

In MY opinion, I feel i am doing well on this thread.

I am now taking a stand against all bullies on mumsnet.

Ive seen too many OPs be bullied and trashed into the ground.

We need a mumsnet bingo card to cross off what the bullies say. As they say the same shit all the time.

"Op you are mentally ill"

Bingo!

I’m sorry but I’m not going to waste my time with someone who has a complete lack of ability to take heed when someone is genuinely trying to help them out.

Not sure what the relevance of me having been to Ireland, lived in Ireland blah blah blah is in comparison to your experience. It does nothing but indicate you are only here to argue with people …. Poorly from that response as it was completely irrelevant.

Not that it matters, but I lived there for several years actually. Your post was never about who who lived in Ireland or who visited there like yourself so you’ve really lost track of your own thread!

I can’t wait for your response, but please know I won’t be responding so I’m sure you can relish in feeling like you have “won” an argument with someone on here by closing them down. I just won’t waste my energy on arguing with someone who has no logical reasoning in their response to me

YourWinter · 02/08/2025 14:31

I was a Waitrose checkout operator when they started making a printed till receipt optional. It’s incredible how many people said they didn’t want one (and how many then leave it in the trolley in the car park). With no receipt you have no proof of payment and it’s just baffling that anyone would opt out.

It’s saving the store a little money, not saving the planet.
