Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

Or... OP ditched friends to post on MN about receipts. 😁

Wow the bullies start early.

You posted that at 6.45am .

Do you have nothing better to do at 6 45 am then to post bullying, nasty posts on mumsnet ? Maybe you could try and do something else, something more normal im your mornings?

Your post is utterly stupid and pathetic.

I stopped posting at 20.30 last night and then I met my friends at 21.00.

We had a lovely night.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing! 😆

Jesus Christ, are you STILL going?

Have a day off!

The irony!

YOU are still here and YOU are still fucking going.

Why are you here on this thread, telling other people yo have day off? You are still here!

I find it strange that the self check out tills in Sainsbury's ask if you want a receipt. I once said 'no,'. I was then stopped by the security guard and asked to show my receipt. I explained that I didn't have one. He told me to make sure I got one in future. Don't know why they don't just make it automatic!

Isitreallysohard · 01/08/2025 07:56

Sorry haven't RTFT. Most shops will allow you to return things even without the receipt if you can show proof of purchase ie bank account. So technically you don't need it. Of course that relies you remembering when you purchased something. I just say yes please or ask for my receipt, there are many things that annoy me but this one I can't get too riled up about. It's probably been mentioned, you could set up an email forties oppose and get them emailed too. Personally just getting the paper one is easier when you are looking for something (as always the old way is usually the more efficient and easiest!)

Blinky21 · 01/08/2025 08:19

It's an odd thing to be bothered by and it's pretty obvious if they are asking you if you want one at all, they are reducing paper waste. If they ask if you want a receipt emailed, they are after your details for marketing too

MysweetAudrina · 01/08/2025 08:19

I live in Dublin, Ireland. I get asked in Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, SuperValu, Dunnes etc if I want a receipt. I always say no.

Exactly. You'd think it would be that simple and that after after a few replies the OP would have gone away happy to have the answer. Maybe even have said thanks? But it's become obvious that that's not what they wanted when they asked the question!

Im not that bothered by it though am i. I don't lie awake at night tossing and turning with rage about receipts

I posted a minor moan on the day that it happened, as thousands of people do on mumsnet all the time.

Are you serious!

"Happy to have the answer" for fuck sake.

As i said, it doesnt reduce that much paper waste, as when I have said no to a receipt, I have seen the shops print the receipts and throw them in the bin.

"Say thanks" . Now you are really having a laugh! As if i would say thanks.

Im laughing reading this post. Its so ridiculous!

Do you think I actually came on here asking a question, got "educated", would say thanks, and then go away "happy to have the answer"

How ridiculous.

No, I already know that they say they do it to stop paper waste. Obviously. Everyone knows that.

It's so strange, almost like not every shop Ireland runs to a strict set of rules

The OP has been to 3 shops where they didn't ask, you are always asked, maybe there should be some kind of special investigation into this disparity

That's from two consecutive posts of yours. Your question in your OP was very clear "Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you?". It's been explained to you countless times, you claim to understand it, but you still don't agree (or believe it happens elsewhere).

Sign up for e receipts. Saves paper and won't get lost/thrown away when you need to return or prove purchase eg when item under warranty. Simples ! Opt out of sales emails etc.

Obviously I know the reason they don't print receipts in the UK, is to reduce paper waste.
That is what they say. Everyone knows that. The reason is out there.

You didnt "explain" anything to me

My question was more - how is it reducing paper waste, when I see them just throw the receipts in the bin anyway.

Just give me the receipt at the point of purchase. Its easier for everyone

Seriously? Because that doesn't always happen. Sometimes they do that and it's pointless. Mostly they ask before printing and then don't print. It's a changing process that is not universal.

Not for those of us who don't want one.

KrisAkabusi · 01/08/2025 09:39

Because most of the time you get asked before they print anything! There may be some shops where the receipt gets printed automatically, or the cashier is working on muscle memory and automatically hits print. But in the vast majority of shops where they ask if you want a receipt, whether they print one or not depends on your answer. Which saves paper!

If you are the only person that has to walk back to a cashier three times a day to be asked about aa receipt, and you are the only person that watches them put a receipt in the bin every time, consider that this appears to be a 'you issue' and not one that reflects the >80% of people here that think you are being unreasonable.

I get why you’re annoyed but equally you’re being unreasonable. I only ask for a receipt if I’ve bought something that needs a guarantee. I’ve been refusing them for years, so much paper waste!

how many times have you screwed up the receipt you’ve been given and chucked it in the bin. Or left it languishing in a pocket. So much landfill.

I have a question... I usually say, no thank you when offered a receipt but nine times out of ten, the receipt is automatically generated. It appears that if unwanted, the receipt is thrown into a bin by the cashier. How is that preventing paper waste /landfill?
