Do you want a receipt

Bunnybenty · 30/07/2025 13:45

I moved to England not that long ago.

In other countries that I lived in, they just gave me a receipt in the shops, everytime that I bought something. The receipt was always handed to me with the purchase.

Why in the UK do they not just give the receipt to you,

instead they always ASK you if you want a receipt.

What annoys me about it, is that it slows the shopping experience down so much.

Many times I have been called back to the till, to be asked if i want a receipt.

Example: I was in a small shop this morning. I only had a certain amount of time, as i was on the way to work. I was walking out of the door, when the woman at the till shouted at me "Wait. Come back! come back!".

I thought maybe my payment hadn't gone through, so I walked all the way back to her.

She said "Do you want a receipt?".

It drives me mad!

I have a question... I usually say, no thank you when offered a receipt but nine times out of ten, the receipt is automatically generated. It appears that if unwanted, the receipt is thrown into a bin by the cashier. How is that preventing paper waste /landfill?

Edited

Not my experience. More often than not now they ask before printing so no wastage.

It's pretty recent this has started happening and places have realised people often don't want receipts. Cafés and restaurants have been further along the curve than shops I've found.

Blueuggboots · 01/08/2025 10:00

I get irritated with “do you want a bag?”. I think it would reduce the bags being used if they didn’t automatically offer….
in many European countries, I believe it is illegal to not be given a receipt whereas in the UK, it isn’t.

I find it strange that the self check out tills in Sainsbury's ask if you want a receipt. I once said 'no,'. I was then stopped by the security guard and asked to show my receipt. I explained that I didn't have one. He told me to make sure I got one in future. Don't know why they don't just make it automatic!

I would have told him to fuck off and find some real crims. Then not shopped their again. Security guards pee me right off.
I got followed last summer in boots I had my birkies on I'm a granny had a baby in a pushchair a toddler on reins and a 5 year old with ASD. How fSt could I bloody run. Haven't spent a penny in that shop since.
Our Sainsbury's security guards spend more time looking at young women and chatting to each other than watching for the professionals.

I don't take a receipt then think well they will have to go back through that till and find my details.

Yes especially when they'd probably just watched the OP buy the things at the self-serve till.

I used to get annoyed with the ones who worked at my company as well - it always irritated me that I was being told what to do by people who didn't actually work for my company but were contracted in from an outside firm. They should be directly employed and receive proper training.

No that wasnt my intention at all. I certainly don't want attention.

And i definitely don't want the attention that i have received on his thread. I have received a lot of abuse. It hasn't been enjoyable

I came on to have a minor moan about a minor thing as a lot of people do. I wasnt thinking about it that seriously.

The point is you made it a national thing.

If you'd just come on and moaned about the receipts people would have agreed or disagreed.

But it's really irritating for people to come on here and complain about the UK (and to tell Irish people they don't know what's going on in their own country, too).

And actually I don't see people coming on here and moaning about practices in France or Canada or Australia. Occasionally you get threads about places people don't like for holidays or that they find creepy (!) but they include UK places too.

Make sure you keep the receipts.

No I will just get the abusive posts deleted.

Which I did.

Haha. The laugh is on you.

I am not taking bullying or abuse on this thread

Oh go away. Fuck sake. Mumsnet has to be the absolute cesspit of humanity at times.

I'm on another chat forum. People talk about all manner of things. They complain abput shopping, about relationships, about friends.

Normal people on that forum come on and reply like adults

on Mumsnet, which is supposed to be an advice forum for adults, it just attracts the most immature crazy posters that write like ten year olds.

How did it get to be like this here?

I’m crazy but you’re the one going on nearly 100 posts about a receipt 😅

cyvguhb · 01/08/2025 12:16

On a quick whizz through I can see about 6 deleted posts and 2 of them are yours @Bunnybenty

What does that tell us?

I think because it saves paper if you don't want one. I can't stand the " can I have your email address" I say no now.

Yes! I never give my email address, and if they ask why, I say I have far too much stuff cluttering up my inbox anyway.

If I do need a receipt (e.g. when buying a sweater as a present for dh) I make sure I get one and keep it safe.

Your post is idiotic.

Loads of threads on mumsnet complain about things that happen in the UK.

How sensitive are you, that you can't take a complaint about something that happens in the UK.

It's not a national thing because it's wildly varied across the UK and other countries.

That's what's annoying people and why this ridiculous thread has gone on so long. Because you insist on talking about things in absolutist terms in different countries.

MilkyBarsAreOnMee · 01/08/2025 13:17

@Bunnybenty, recent posts (which I agree some have been less than kind) aside, people disagreeing with you or pointing out the flaws or lack of logic in your responses is not "abuse" or "bullying". Yes, a lot have been fairly forthright but that, I assume, was most likely in response to your own tone and refusal to accept any differing views.

Edited for spelling.

OP you’ve literally had some of your own posts removed for bullying & nastiness, you lose the moral highground a bit then.

Why do you think people on “this thread” necessarily are horrendous?
I think it’s because the OP has set the tone.

What are you on about "and other countries"

As i have already written , i never said that it didn't happen in other countries.

And it is not anything that "i have done", that is annoying peoppe.

I have seen the same kind of bullying pile - ons happen on so many threads on here.

Remember that the start of this thread, I even predicted exactly what the bullies would write. As it is the same on every thread.

And I predicted it exactly right.

You said "I don't think it happens in ireland" in direct response to me saying it's normal practice here, since confirmed by lots of other Irish posters. So you're being a bit disingenuous with your claims now.
