To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

Why are we still doing this to each other?! This incredible group of young women worked & trained for years, showed up and delivered in a way few of us ever will and we're still having a dig?! I am in awe of them and thank them for showing up, working hard, playing fair and bringing it home. They looked lovely at 10 Downing but wouldn't change a thing if they didn't...

EviesHat · 28/07/2025 23:11

Dressed by M&S? So basically told what to wear, the outfits won’t necessarily be something they either like or would choose.

Criticising the outfits isn’t criticising the team, it’s pointing out that young women in their 20s are unlikely to have chosen to wear the outfits in the photo if alternatives were available.

Unfortunately it does look a bit hit-and-miss, probably because a lot of the outfits don’t seem to fit the wearer very well. Given this is the England Women’s team I would have hoped the bosses could have afforded a seamstress.

MerylSqueak · 28/07/2025 23:11

They look completely fine. I'm not rushing to Mand S to buy it myself but it's an ok selection. It's not as if there's anything completely out of the ordinary - like knickerbockers or something. What bit do you find ' ridiculous' OP?

By the by, what do women have to do to get a bit of a cheer from their compatriots?

KaleQueen · 28/07/2025 23:12

@BasilParsley come back with your fashion opinions when you’ve just been part of an elite group of athletes who’ve won an international sporting trophy..
They can wear wtf they like. They’re all stunning too.
I sense a touch of envy towards these fit gorgeous successful down to earth girls.

ZenNudist · 28/07/2025 23:12

It's depressing that in 2025 with women doing well in a sport traditionally dominated by men the focus is on what they wear.

Annoyingly male sports teams can all dress identically in suits and it's fine but women have to be decorative.

It's warm, the baggy trousers and waistcoats seem more on trend than a lot of alternatives.

Namechangerage · 28/07/2025 23:14

The outfits aren’t my taste and I hate beige - I still think You Are Being Ridiculous.

The shapes of the trousers and waistcoats etc are on trend. They look happy and comfortable. They’ve all clearly chosen outfits they like.

What would you rather they wear?

whengodwasarabbit1 · 28/07/2025 23:16

I thought they looked fab and it's so nice to see talented girls in the news that look like and act like their true authentic selves. Really proud. I want more role models like this for my kids. Go lionesses !

WhatterySquash · 28/07/2025 23:17

I did think it looked a bit odd but I assumed what had happened was they were getting back and going straight to Downing Street, no time for everyone to go home or to a hotel and sort out a "fancy do at No. 10" look so someone arranged for them to have some kind of team outfit to wear, that wasn't actual footie kit which would have been even more odd.

if one person was wearing the baggy trouser suit I think it would be cool and perfectly appropriate. It's just the way it looks like a uniform that makes you look twice.

And as ever I think it is perfectly fine to say "why are they all wearing the same outfit like a uniform?", perfectly reasonable question or thing to notice. I think their win is fantastic, they are total stars, and great role models for girls. I am also allowed to think "weird uniform thing going on", it does not detract from anything.

It is not some kind of feminist triumph leaping on and berating anyone who dares to notice what women wear. Women are people and I notice what people wear, both men and women, and it's very normal to talk about it.

carmak · 28/07/2025 23:17

They would have looked great/better in their own clothes.

according to the BBC this is England's official clothing line so YABVU OP.
They looked plenty nice enough, smart enough and they looked successful AF in their official England gear. I think they deserve nothing but praise for how they have conducted themselves during this whiole tournament.

England's Maya Le Tissier lifts the trophy high above her head. Her teammates are wearing medals and smiling. They are standing in front of the No 10 Downing Street door

At a special 10 Downing Street reception, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner tells the squad "you've made us all so proud".

They're not wearing what they like though, are they? They're choosing from a very limited selection of clothing designed to give M&S some advertising. I think they'd have looked better in their own choices, actually.

mindingmyown37 · 28/07/2025 23:22

I mean it’s defo not my style.. but it didn’t look ridiculous. I’m sure somewhere someone is judging your style op, perception is a magnificent thing…. If we all liked the same things, the world would be a boring place

People would have been criticising them just as much, if not more, if they wore their own clothes. Because whatever they wore, some people wouldn’t have liked. And women are always judged on what they wear (sadly).

At least this way the criticism is definitely not about their personal styles.

SpottyAardvark · 28/07/2025 23:25

My knowledge of fashion could fit comfortably onto a postage stamp, but I do know one thing : Those incredible women could turn up at Number Ten wearing bin bags and they would still be heroes and brilliant role models for young girls.

Who would you prefer your daughter to look up to, Leah Williamson & Lucy Bronze or some vacuous social media ‘influencer’?

Low-heeled shoes ??????

OP appears stuck in a '90s high-heeled fashion loop.

Well, people have every right to have opinions about clothes. We don't all have to like the same things. I was just responding to a few people saying that women should be able to wear what they like - of course they should, but in this case, they're not. They're wearing what they've been told to wear.

Sakura7 · 28/07/2025 23:28

Are people seriously suggesting they should have gone home and picked up their own clothes? Honestly 😂

You know they don't all live in London, right?

saraclara · 28/07/2025 23:28

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 28/07/2025 22:28

I liked their outfits. They looked relaxed but well turned out - and although there was a colour scheme I had the impression all, or at least most of them, were wearing the things they were happiest with. (Hadn’t known about M&S sponsorship but that makes sense.)

And navy trousers would have turned them into cabin crew. At least they looked contemporary.

Edited

All of that. I thought it was clear that they had a choice within a range that worked together. And I liked the contemporary look.
Some of the suggestions up thread around like something out of the 70s. And red white and blue would have been really bad. Anyway, they were competing for England, not Great Britain so it wouldn't have been relevant.

It seemed obvious to me that each of the players had been in a position to choose a combination from the collection they were offered, that suited their own personal style.

LillyPJ · 28/07/2025 23:28

'Low heeled shoes'... Thank goodness somebody's got the sense not to ruin their feet or spine in an effort to follow fashion or appeal to men.

No. I don't think anybody is suggesting that. Just saying that their own choices might have been better than the M&S designs.

Devonshiregal · 28/07/2025 23:31

These are outfits that only look good on a skinny 17 year old posing her body at a crazy angle in order to make it look good for an instagram post. The same 17 year old would not actually go out in it because without sticking your ass out, strategically lifting one side of the top up to your belly button and pouting like a fish, it’s just a shit outfit. And no one can walk around like that.

MerylSqueak · 28/07/2025 23:34

If you Google the pictures of the lionesses with Cameron, formal or informal, it is an improvement.

I'm sure they would have chosen better for themselves, but I don't think many elite sports people do chose at the moment.

They clearly had a choice. Some of them went for the classic black fitted stuff that looked quite chic, some went for the in vogue baggy trousers, some went for something in the middle.

I have to laugh at the poster appalled that they were wearing low heels. These are female women playing a game that until recently was very male. Going by my adult DD and her team mates who play serious football in a league, I'd say that most if not all are not high heels people! I don't think my daughter owns a single pair of even medium heels.

Maddy70 · 28/07/2025 23:40

I thought they all looked great. Individual but with a colour theme

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 28/07/2025 23:44

I thought they looked great. It looks like they’ve all chosen what they feel comfortable in. They look smart and coordinated without all wearing the same thing, which is usually something that has to ‘suit everyone’ but ends up not suiting anyone.
