To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

To all of you saying that women shouldn’t care about their appearance - do you wear make up?

Height of hypocrisy if so.

Who said they shouldn’t care about their own appearance? People can care about what they look like, why would that be a problem? Making someone else’s looks the focus of discussion is a problem. Their appearance is not the most important thing about them. And who says they weren’t happy with how they looked? There is nothing to indicate that they weren’t.
No, I don’t wear make up. I do care how I look (I don’t think people need to wear make up to look good). I don’t expect other people to care more about how I look than my many other achievements.

This makes no sense.

You can take care of your own personal appearance without ever caring about or commenting on other people's clothes etc.

@Onleemoi but it does. I’ve got a very keen footballer daughter who plays at county level. Her team were all watching and some parents had taken their kids to London. We are all for supporting these women. Not looking to tear them down. She’s done that herself. There were several comments about her swearing when we should be focusing on the football so it certainly diminished it here and I’m sure we weren’t the only ones.

'There were several comments about her swearing when we should be focusing on the football'...PRECICELY!!! 🙄

'I’m sure we weren’t the only ones.'...Then you all need to GET A LIFE?! 😡

Do you think they should have worn skirts or dresses?

Absolutely not - but it should be THEIR choice. It's the blandness and starkness of the colours along with the ridiculously unflattering bagginess of those outfits which I bet they wouldn't have chosen if they had been given the chance....

You don’t know that though! They may have loved their outfits 🤷🏻‍♀️

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 19:02

I care a lot about my appearance, botox eyebrows done, the lot. I also didnt give a monkeys about what they were wearing although I think I am developing a bit of a crush on Lucy Bronze.

EviesHat · 30/07/2025 19:04

@SomeOfTheTrouble @verycloakanddaggers

And yet…

”The women are athletes and not models so unlikely to care much about the fashion side of things.” @Snorlaxo

“I cannot imagine one of those women giving half a second's thought or voice to the how they could improve on the look of one of their possibly major sponsor's clothes or in the scheme of things at that time why TAF it would matter!?” @Cariadm

“They weren't the most amazing outfits but fair play to the girls for not giving a shit and being appreciatve to the sponsors.” @Radioundermypillow

Wide legged trousers have been a staple part of women’s wardrobes for the last 100 years. The M&S ones aren’t new or radical, they’re just cheap polyester which will end up in landfill.

This thread isn’t criticising the women, their achievements or their bodies, it’s a criticism of whoever was responsible for sending young women onto the world stage in ill-fitting clothes. Clothes which give the impression that the football bigwigs don’t care about their team looking second-fiddle in comparison to the clothes given to the men’s team. But the again, that’s exactly how women’s football is perceived, so it shouldn’t be any surprise.

Incidentally, in 2014 the women’s Colombian cycling team were sent out in the outfits below 👇. Most people who saw this were aghast. However, I now see that no one should have commented AT ALL, because who cares that young women were made to parade in such inappropriate attire, yes?

True... would be good if we could get a straw poll - but I guess they are all obligated to being silent about the outfits for commercial reasons!

@BasilParsley It’ll soon be obvious anyway. If members of the team like the clothes they’ll be wearing them out and about. So as they look so great, are so fashionable etc etc, I imagine they’ll be putting photos up on instagram showcasing their love for beige polyester.

EviesHat · 30/07/2025 19:12

In case the Colombian Women’s cycling team photo gets censored by mumsnet (yes, the team kit really was that bad), you can find the image here:

on a day to day basis no I don’t wear make up. Im 50 and would prefer to wear a decent moisturiser and accept myself.

going out then yes.

so no, not a hypocrite.

BasilParsley · 30/07/2025 19:15

@EviesHat That was very enlightening about that team - thank you! Quite shocking too!

Oh, and I've not worn make up since, about, 10 years ago... Too old and can't be bothered.

Interesting choice of words…

Does this mean you don’t accept your natural face is good enough for a night out?

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 30/07/2025 19:20

There is a big difference between clothes that some people think are unflattering (and where there isn’t even consensus on that) and clothes that make the wearer look half naked

And yet, so many people are saying WGAF about what corporate sponsors provide for women to wear.

Either we are allowed to care what women are instructed to wear in public, or we are not.

Incidentally Mumsnet keeps removing the links to articles criticising the 2014 kit, but you can find them everywhere from pro cycling websites to the Guardian.

All of that is only relevant if you believe all of those things to be true. Many don’t.

More’s the pity.

it really doesn’t matter that she swore! Get a grip!

How many times do you need to have to have it explained?! Most of the clothes worn by the team for their visit to Downing St were by M&S who are one of their MAJOR sponsors!! 🙄
Your are possibly right in saying that the women themselves would probably not have chosen the outfits themselves BUT they will fully understand that without sponsors they would not be going to Number 10 in the first place...Wise up FFS!!! 😏

But the styles were bang on trend - waistcoats etc. , and by having a neutral palette, an overall cohesive look was attained. I thought the overall look and photograph looked good.

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 20:15

I think the FA pay for most things! Sarina for a start! I thought they might be the M&S suits on their web site. Just not flattering for many of them. Sadly. You need to be very tall and willowy. M&S could have made alternative trouser shapes available and beige is …… beige. Poor choice of colour.

Beige looks lovely against black skin.

I thought this too. Woeful choice of clothes. Makes no sense at all.

Well maybe you should focus on their achievement rather than their outfits. This is about sport. Not London fashion week.

torkandgrunt · 31/07/2025 13:26

You have been so conditioned by the "Because you're worth it" of modern culture that you persist in judging women by their appearance.
These women have performed physically and have won. They do not need to look pretty for Downing Street.
