To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

They're not wearing what they like though, are they? They're choosing from a very limited selection of clothing designed to give M&S some advertising. I think they'd have looked better in their own choices, actually.

Can't you imagine the posts if they'd worn their own clothes, "why does X look like their going clubbing afterwards?" Why has Y not made more of an effort with their outfit for going to Downing Street?" "AIBU for thinking that Zs dress is far too tight. Their meant to be role models for young women".

They cannot win (apart from major tournaments. But even then people will still find fault).

Tryingtokeepitreal · 28/07/2025 23:48

Agree the outfits look awful.

CarpetKnees · 28/07/2025 23:49

I'm more confused as to why they were invited to Downing Street for a reception, when the Prim Minister was in Scotland ????

I mean, did he just leave the key under the mat and say 'help yourselves to a drink and some snacks' ?

Surely if you are invited by the Prime Minister to an official reception, then the least expected is that the Prime Minister is there.

Tryingtokeepitreal · 28/07/2025 23:51

I wonder what they think of the clothes they had to wear. I suppose it's like being a bridesmaid. You can't really say.

I thought they looked nice.

So did I. I think the outfits were elegant and weather-appropriate - which is not an easy task in this heat! Considering they only won late last night, they’ve had very little time to prepare a suitable outfit that works for plane travel, press photo calls and a Downing Street reception, and I think the outfits tick all those boxes.

Also, as others have said, fashion choices and taste is very subjective, so it’s fine to not like what they’re wearing. I think the most important thing is that they like their outfits and that they feel comfortable and confident in them.

I know what you mean. My feeling is Downing Street wanted to celebrate their success as soon as possible, whilst it’s fresh in the nation’s minds and before the team go off on a break after the tournament, with the knowledge that there was a chance that the PM might not be able to join due to diary commitments. Hopefully he was at lest able to join virtually to congratulate them, especially as he is a big football fan.

The Prime Minister can't be in two places at once. It was by no means certain that they'd win. They were hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister.

Newmeagain · 28/07/2025 23:58

Lots of the young women at my work dress like that (London, professional environment). M&S is very popular with them. They earn very high salaries but tend to go for pretty basic outfits.

BernieBarks · 28/07/2025 23:59

If it were the men's team do you think similar comments would be made ?

I very much doubt it.

Floradear · 29/07/2025 00:02

Now that Sewing Bee has restarted we are all tailoring experts. My opinion from limited photos is that there is a little too much material above their knees. South of that it is a nicer line. IMO

saraclara · 28/07/2025 23:35

They clearly had a choice. Some of them went for the classic black fitted stuff that looked quite chic, some went for the in vogue baggy trousers, some went for something in the middle.

I have to laugh at the poster appalled that they were wearing low heels. These are female women playing a game that until recently was very male. Going by my adult DD and her team mates who play serious football in a league, I'd say that most if not all are not high heels people! I don't think my daughter owns a single pair of even medium heels.

A choice?

Lucky coincidence that the whole team favour baggy trousers, ill-fitting jackets, and longline waistcoats without blouses in a palette of black and greeny beige. They also all seem to have exactly the same taste in shoes. Given the way M&S shoes fit they must all have fairly wide feet too. 🙄

I know.
Mind you, I seldom notice what other people wear anyway.

DalstonsRhubarb · 29/07/2025 00:07

I love oversized suits but these are no good- shapeless and ill-fitted (even oversized tailoring should fit in some places) and a very boring colour. They’ve managed to make a group of young world class athletes look like size 16 office managers.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 29/07/2025 00:12

I’ve just googled it.

I think they look absolutely fine, and very happy. I genuinely wouldn’t have noticed their outfits at all, I think they are completely unremarkable.

as they should be, as they are sportswomen, not fashion models.

'Low heeled shoes' is my favourite part haha! So funny. They look great. Perhaps issue is poster's view of what women 'should' look like.

I love that these women are dressing for themselves, in smart suits rather than naff dresses and not being ruled my patriarchal expectations.

How can you say they're dressing for themselves when they've clearly been told to choose from a selection of very similar looking garments with a limited colour palette? It's a business deal!

I mean, they could wear bin liners for all I care - they're heroines - but let's not bend the truth here!

Wreckinball · 29/07/2025 00:13

Were used to seeing them in uniform on the pitch, so seems a little odd at first glance that they’re not dressed the same. Some of the cuts look a bit unflattering but overall I think it’s a smart selection. Watched some video of them on PM’s lawn and they looked very classy and comfortable

Thing is, from the lousy fit of the outfits you wouldn’t think they’re professional sportswomen. Professional biscuit tasters maybe, but athletic sportswomen, no.

RantzNotBantz · 29/07/2025 00:17

They don’t choose the team uniform, they get told what to wear!

For me, our champion lionesses should have freedom to wear what they like!

(I think the colour of the trousers is horrible)

Charlize43 · 29/07/2025 00:19

Do you really think they might be more popular if they were writhing around in fishnet stocking and a Basque like Megan Thee Stallion?

Oh did were body shaming now? Fucking hell man. The call is really coming from inside the house isn't it.

I agree about the poor cut of the clothes. I'm surprised M&S haven't made more of this opportunity to showcase their designs, which must have cost them a fair bit to secure.

This isn't a radical new look for the youth, it's been done plenty of times before with much more panache and skill. Again, this is on Marks and Spencer, not the lionesses.

Mistyglade · 29/07/2025 00:20

Quite clearly the sponsors stuff. I have to say that was the last thing on my mind watching them make history as talented role models our country has in these modest young women. Criticising their clothes is something my mother would’ve done. Got to put them down somehow eh.
