To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

@HighLadyofTheNightCourt there were at least 7 newspapers leading the story with her ‘F bomb’ and featuring it in their headlines. I think that’s a shame for her and her teammates. It was a really stupid thing to do.

Of course there were. The British press (and their readership) will never miss an opportunity to tear down a young, successful sportsperson. Bonus points when it’s a woman. Swearing is so unfeminine and women only deserve a place in public life if they behave impeccably.

Do you truly believe that one word is sufficiently disgusting to spoil the team’s whole achievement? One word is enough to outweigh the achievement of Kelly twice scoring the winning goal in a major international tournament at the age of 27?

It’s completely fair enough to dislike swearing. It would be perfectly proportionate to say that you would prefer she hadn’t sworn but that it doesn’t ultimately cancel out everything that they have achieved, especially as she has apologised. You say you have a footballing daughter. Don’t teach her that all her achievements can be destroyed with a single slip-up.

It was one word. It does not spoil or diminish anything. The only issue is people tripping over themselves to find fault with these women, for saying a word they don’t like, for not wearing yellow belts, for not being as fast as men. Madness.

This.
I've been here for years and am usually pretty robust when it comes to MN but some of the threads since Sundays incredible win, including (presumably women) posters desperately posting statistics from teenage boys running times to prove that women athletes aren't as good, posters tying themselves in knots over why the men's team are still superior even though they've won fuck all and this bollocks about low heels and hems actually brings me down.

Pyjamatimenow · 30/07/2025 08:34

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat Of course but I would have been very upset if she’d done this. I teach her to speak properly especially when she’s making any kind of public speech. I didn’t say it cancelled out the achievement. I just think it spoilt it and it’s disappointing that she’s given the press the opportunity to focus on something negative.

I’m sure she regrets it but how depressing (yet predictable) that the press have decided to run with that one negative angle. There were dozens of positive things they could have chosen to lead with.

hoonoo · 30/07/2025 08:38

they are football players, wrapped up in the joy of winning another euro, back to back, smashing boundaries and sexism and overjoyed at winning and a parade and a visit to no 10... if i was in the mix of that i wouldnt give a monkeys about what i was wearing. i would be living the dream!!

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 08:40

@Radioundermypillow It’s actually a shame they didn’t give a shit about the suits though! No idea who designed them but it didn’t suit most of them. There should be some pride in clothes even if you don’t give a shit about most things. There are much better cuts for trousers that would have been more flattering. Do they have no advice?

HashtagSadTimes · 30/07/2025 08:40

SomeOfTheTrouble · 29/07/2025 22:54

The players will absolutely care

You have absolutely no idea if they were unhappy with their outfits.

You sure about that?

You don't get it. She doesn't have to 'give' them anything. She's a woman in the public eye and they would have found something negative to report. If it hadn't been swearing it would have been something else. If she had been confident, they'd have called her cocky. If she'd been crying too hard to speak, they'd have said she was overly emotional and it just goes to show that women can't be rational. If she had shouted and punched the air they would have called her aggressive.

I really hope you're going to reflect on the strength of your reaction here. You've said that it was 'disgusting', 'really stupid', a 'complete embarrassment', it's 'spoilt' everything and 'diminished' the event.

What, they’ve told you they were unhappy with them?

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 08:51

Swearing, where someone has to apologise for you, is always poor. It’s a bit sad anyone swears at such an event. Guess these women are not such great role models!

That reflects badly on newspapers and journalism, not Chloe Kelly.

Opening doors for the daughters of MNers and yet they focus on one small negative. I’d be forever grateful!

Exactly. My 10 year old daughter who got up early this morning to go outside and practice her penalties couldn’t care less that Chloe Kelly got over excited and swore (and she’s a real prude who hates swearing!). It doesn’t diminish the inspiration she is feeling as a result of their achievements.

Pyjamatimenow · 30/07/2025 09:02

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat I have reflected thank you and I still think saying ‘fuck’ when you’re representing your country outside Buckingham Palace with millions of children watching is really awful.

Attempting to bring these women down and reduce their win to whinging about one 4 letter word is far more awful.

SomethingFun · 30/07/2025 09:05

What a shitty thread. Women supporting women indeed. Maybe they don’t give a fuck about their hems or what shade of beige they wear - maybe women can wear clothes for comfort and convenience instead of stressing about whether their bum looks big or what their thighs look like.

Who gives a fuck that Chloe Kelly swore. Get a grip of yourself, she’s an amazing role model and diminishing her success is really low.

I absolutely love watching women do stuff really well and not being reduced to how they look through the male gaze. It’s so rare and so refreshing

edited as I referenced the wrong swear 😁

You haven’t, at least not in relation to the bigger picture, but I remain hopeful that you will. All the best to you and your daughter.

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 09:15

@SomethingFun I don’t agree. I don’t have to accept women, or anyone else, should swear in this situation. Frankly it’s crass from anyone. Yes, it did appear they didn’t care about what they looked like. That doesn’t mean I blindly agree with it! Who actually designed and advised on these clothes? Were they the M&S suits? And no, as a women I don’t have to offer total support for other women regardless of what they say. We are not living in a totalitarian state of unthinking robot women who are told what to think!

Summerholiday321 · 30/07/2025 09:17

I've loved watching the whole tournament and the parade overall and agree with other posters that strange trousers and swear words shouldn't take away from what these women have done,
but personally I don't think it was a mistake to swear at all or a slip of the tounge, I think CK wanted it to be controversial.

Right? I’d love to know how they’ve come to this conclusion. My first thought is it’s down to all the ‘she’s so cocky’ press Kelly’s been getting because men are pressed by the way she takes a pen.

Then you all need to lighten up and enjoy the moment rather than picking one tiny part of the celebrations to get het up about. There’s so much more you could be focusing on.

No. We don’t need to lighten up.

We’re perfectly within our right to expect standards from those who represent the country at any level.
