To think the Lionesses' Outfits in this Picture are Ridiculous?

OK, so they go to Downing Street to celebrate their win with the high and mighty of the land ... But who the f**k thought that combination of baggy trousers, grey, black, long shorts, low heeled shoes, a bit of white here and there was The Look?

Are they trying make them look like men because women's football shouldn't be allowed? Did any of them have the opportunity to say "actually, those big, baggy trousers don't suit me"? Because they don't for a lot of them...

@TizerorFizz but this is the problem isn’t it. Women however talented and successful will always be imperfect as they are human so you can always find something to pick at if you make the choice to.

Someone was slagging an outfit Gwyneth Paltrow wore 30 years ago when she won an Oscar upthread - this is not a proportionate discourse, this is nit picking and fault finding of any woman in the public eye. This impacts all women - how many women don’t put themselves forward for things because of worries about their looks or if they say the wrong thing? How many women waste countless hours of their lives critiquing what they look like, what they sound like, what they said or didn’t say because we all know that anything and everything can and will be used against us because we are female.

Yeah you can say what you like but why not say stuff that adds to the world instead of diminishes it?

SomeOfTheTrouble · 30/07/2025 09:28

It never ceases to amaze me what lengths people will go to to diminish the achievements of women.

Let's not forget that in that post the same person used the example of the physical appearance of a three-year-old girl in their attempt to justify criticising the fit of clothing worn by people in the public eye, and felt that this was a perfectly reasonable and logical defence of their position.

I'm going to repeat my point that it's reasonable to be disappointed that Chloe Kelly swore. The question to consider is whether that reaction is proportionate. For those of us who want the world to be a tiny bit better for our daughters, there is a responsibility to recognise the impulse to criticise women in the public eye, pause, and recognise that it is a symptom of our own upbringing in a patriarchal society which punishes women who achieve great things.

SomethingFun · 30/07/2025 09:50

Why is it reasonable to be disappointed that Chloe Kelly swore? She said a word inappropriate for daytime telly. Why make it a big deal? Maybe our dds need to see that as a woman you can make small mistakes and still be an amazing role model - perfection isn’t a requirement to be a woman worthy of success and admiration.

Onleemoi · 30/07/2025 09:24

Right? I’d love to know how they’ve come to this conclusion. My first thought is it’s down to all the ‘she’s so cocky’ press Kelly’s been getting because men are pressed by the way she takes a pen.

Not at all. Like I said I've loved watching the whole tournament and gotten to know some of the women's personalities (as much as I can from seeing them on the telly) and I think CK enjoys big moments in front of crowds, celebrating and dancing etc... as she should. Loved it last time when she whipped off her top and swung it round her head after scoring a goal too.
I have not described her as cocky and never would. I just don't believe she swore by mistake and regrets it, as other posters have said. Just my opinion.

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcatIve said nothing about a 3 year old.

However women, who have fought to have a voice, should not be shut up by other women! If CK can swear I can say the team didn’t look great! Works both ways doesn’t it? I’m not going to say nothing if I believe there was improvement to be made because I’ve the temerity to challenge women! What is that teaching women? Other than to shut up. Get back in your box because you have other views? The sisterhood does not deserve unquestioning support. Challenge is good!

Did you read the rest of my post, and my other posts on this thread? That is exactly the point I've made over and over. It's fine to have an opinion on the swearing. It's reasonable for that to be disappointment if you want. It's not reasonable to have a disproportionate reaction which seemingly cancels out all admiration for the achievements and I am fully in agreement with you that there's no need to make it a big deal. I think we are largely aligned on this issue.

I'm not advocating the unquestioning support of everything that women do in the public eye. Equality means holding public figures to equal account and I think that many posters on this thread are not recognising that their reaction to Kelly is symptomatic of some much bigger and deeper-rooted problems.

I did not say that you did.

I don't think you can have read my posts if you think that this is my position.

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 09:15

@SomethingFun I don’t agree. I don’t have to accept women, or anyone else, should swear in this situation. Frankly it’s crass from anyone. Yes, it did appear they didn’t care about what they looked like. That doesn’t mean I blindly agree with it! Who actually designed and advised on these clothes? Were they the M&S suits? And no, as a women I don’t have to offer total support for other women regardless of what they say. We are not living in a totalitarian state of unthinking robot women who are told what to think!

It's just a bizarre rumination- find yourself hating the outfit, find yourself recoiling that a woman made a mistake and said fuck - but not to look at that and think, well actually it wasn't about the outfits or well she obviously made a mistake and I'll concentrate my energy on what they did so well. Just to let yourself bask in the horror of the details. You must be getting something out of it but I'm not sure what, unless you have an obsession with perfection and a desperate need for others to conform.

Applying critical thinking to your own thought processes is where growth lies.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 30/07/2025 10:06

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 30/07/2025 09:22

We are in the realms of fiction now.

That sums up this whole thread. The whole team coerced into trousers and Chloe Kelly deliberately wanting to portray herself as some female Liam Gallagher. 🙄🙄🙄

SomethingFun · 30/07/2025 10:28

But what are you adding to anything saying they didn’t look great in your opinion? Maybe they don’t care? Maybe they do? But it’s not like anyone can go back in time and change what they wore. And focusing on that instead of what they achieved is just bullshit. As all this is subjective anyway, even if they all think they look marvellous you’re still there with your opinions.

Maybe you can set up a gofundme so next time they can all have custom couture that meets your sartorial standards when they win a sporting trophy. I’m sure your input would be valued.

Rewis · 30/07/2025 10:30

I saw the pic on instagram and said actually said to my bf how I love the suits. They look fantastic.

BasilParsley · 28/07/2025 22:15

Natch, I'm now waiting for the picture to be approved ~yawn~

Do you think they should have worn skirts or dresses?

Thatsthesizeofawatermelon · 30/07/2025 13:34

I just don't believe she swore by mistake and regrets it, as other posters have said.

I don’t for a minute believe it either.

Cherrytree86 · 30/07/2025 13:35

Who gives a shit if Chloe swore??

get a life!

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2025 13:36

@RadioundermypillowI don’t “hate” or “recoil”. Don’t misinterpret me in a malicious way. I really am allowed to say I don’t like something! In this case clothes and language. I’m perfectly capable of critical thinking thank you. I thought about what they looked like and what CK said and it didn’t chime with me. If it does with you fine. I’m not sure you understand critical thinking though.

And so what if she doesn’t regret it? Should women self flagellate for anything they do that others deem to be inappropriate?

Summerholiday321 · 30/07/2025 13:56

Onleemoi · 30/07/2025 09:53

Why though?

Sigh. Because she was happy and excited and full of pride as she said it, probably hoping to get a cheer from the crowd. I don't think she needs people to apologise for her.
Every time they score a goal the camera zooms in and catches a "fucking come on" or something. I don't get why people think my opinion is insulting to CK, I haven't actually criticised her just said I didn't think it was a mistake.

Initially came on this thread to say something like the outfits don't take away from sporting achievements and when I came back it was all "I'm sure she's sorry she swore and it's all in the papers" and I thought I'm sure she's not. Then got accused of being in the realms of fiction.

Onleemoi · 30/07/2025 14:15

Weird conclusion to come too and (another) weird thing to focus on, imo. Thanks for the explanation though and sorry my asking made you sigh. Didn’t realise it’d be an imposition.

Well if she doesn’t understand that swearing isn’t a good look and all the more so when your image is being beamed worldwide, and that representing your country comes with certain standards of behaviour and professionalism, then hopefully someone will take the time out to explain it to her in very simple to understand terms so there isn’t a next time.

Tekknonan · 30/07/2025 16:15

They're footballers, FFS, and they're a team. Men wear sports gear when they're celebrating a win. You remind me of the people who started trolling Jessica Ennis as 'fat' when she was pictured in a long dress for an evening event.

What is wrong with some people?

All of that is only relevant if you believe all of those things to be true. Many don’t.
