Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 14:57

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

OP posts:

Why are you so aggressive on every thread you post on @Blottum ?

OP has said it was not her usual form, its not a regular ocurrance & she feels hungover & anxious today.

What more do you want- the Spanish inquisition?

OP take it easy today & go easy on yourself.

It's not the end of the world once you're not doing it regularly

What more do you want- the Spanish inquisition?

Nobody expects that.

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 15:33

No, I made myself feel bad about it

So you cooked a meal presumably for multiple people, chatter, engaged, tidied up as you went along, bid any guests farewell, dealt with children etc?

I mean op, it seems like 2 bottles really didn’t have much an impact on you at the time?

3KidsPlusDdog · 27/07/2025 15:36

OP, please be kind to yourself. It sounds like you made a mistake, and that’s okay.

I know that feeling of crushing anxiety after wine. I can drink a bottle, and be okay (ish) the next day, but I wouldn’t dare drink even a sip more than that, because I know that I would be crawling out of my skin the next day.
I mostly stick to two glasses now, with a lot of water during.

Alcohol is a depressant, remember that.

So no one made you feel bad about it? No one mentioned it?

Will you back off, jeeze.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/07/2025 15:37

I think opening the second bottle would have made me think I’d had enough.

Grapewrath · 27/07/2025 15:37

I’m not sure if you’ve posted here for reassurance as in ‘yes course that’s totally normal’ or if not, why you’ve posted.
If you are looking for affirmation that this is ok, then you obviously don’t think it is or feel guilt/regret. I think you have some work to do either way and I hope you are ok

Clockchair · 27/07/2025 15:37

I definitely could do this if I started drinking in the afternoon and the wine was going down easy and I was eating. Not a good idea to do it all the time though!

mightbetheone · 27/07/2025 15:39

Blottum · 27/07/2025 14:58

Why? Because you have a drink problem and hopefully this is the first step you take in admitting that and beginning to address it

Alcoholism doesn’t work like that. You don’t have one binge session and immediately ‘have a drink problem.’

Of course it’s too much in one sitting in terms of units and if op did this regularly it would be real issue for her health. But alcoholism is thrown around so casually on here, it’s really unhelpful and shows complete ignorance.

Op it’s easily done to be honest. 2 bottles is six large glasses over the course of several hours. In my youth I’d drink a full bottle of wine before I even went out! Couldn’t do it now of course. Drink plenty of water, get some carbs down, have a good night sleep and you’ll be grand tomorrow.

Why should anyone have made the OP feel bad about it? Some people on Mumsnet have very strange opinions about alcohol. I suppose the OP should be grateful that she’s not elderly - there’s nothing mumsnetters hate more than old people, apart from possibly old people who have a drink to enjoy themselves from time to time. 😆😆

OP - I always swore by a nice runny cheese omelet to cure a hangover, so try some eggs if you haven’t eaten.

Pixiedust49 · 27/07/2025 15:18

In my younger days we used to drink a bottle of wine each before we even went out!

Yes same and then order another bottle each in the wine bar before the club. I can still easily drink two bottles of a good red if I start at lunchtime. Try not to do that too often though.

Maybe I am in the wrong place for this. I’m not an alcoholic (at least I don’t think I am)

Addiction is dependency. It’s needing that thing (in this case alcohol) above anything else and having to get it regardless of the negative implications on your health, relationships, work etc. MN is notoriously OTT about alcohol and while everyone is perfectly entitled to their own views around drinking, it’s utterly ridiculous to label anyone who enjoys a drink as an alcoholic.

Do you drink to this level often? Do you regularly go over the recommended 14 units per week? Is alcohol getting in the way of your life or taking up loads of your headspace? If the answer these questions is yes then maybe it’s time to start having a think about your habits.

But please don’t let silly people on here convince you that you are an alcoholic based on one boozy Saturday.

Scottishskifun · 27/07/2025 15:45

I'm also paying today OP for daring to have a rare evening out with DH not quite 2 bottles but we got through 2 over the course of a evening and dinner and finished with a cocktail.

It's definitely a rare event for us thankfully the kids have been happy playing at home and it's a wet one here anyway.

Titasaducksarse · 27/07/2025 15:45

Yes I could drink that amount.

Yes I also have a problematic relationship with alcohol so generally just don't drink at all anymore.

SuperFi · 27/07/2025 15:45

I could do 2 bottles over a few hours, especially when cooking. But only if it was a lower strength wine, they do vary considerably. My limit is a 11% vol, .

Fenal tea before bed after drinking wine seems to help me enormously the next day😀

Jennyathemall · 27/07/2025 15:45

Crikeyalmighty · 27/07/2025 15:26

Why were you making Sunday roast on Saturday ??

Presumably because the story is a fabrication?

Createausername1970 · 27/07/2025 15:47

Two bottles of wine would have me throwing up and probably stuck in bed the following day. But I can consume fair quantities of rum with seemingly no ill effects.

It sounds like your emotional response (anxiety) is a sign that it was too much for you.

Teenytwo · 27/07/2025 15:47

I could if I was busy and someone else was helping pour, if I had to open the new bottle myself I would stop it alone, but if DP went to pour me a drink and he opened me the new bottle I probably wouldn’t realise. Over 6 hours it’s about a glass an hour.

SilenceOfTheTimTams · 27/07/2025 15:47

You’re missing the crucial issue, OP.

If it was white wine then you’re a dirty tramp. If it was rosé you’re an ingenue. If it was red you’re a sophisticated lady of the world.

Reading this thread is dragging me towards the bottle of very acceptable red I’ve got beside the hob. Mmmm.

Globules · 27/07/2025 15:48

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 15:33

No, I made myself feel bad about it

Don't.

Ignore the MN alchy calls. You know the truth if this is a one off or not. The fact you started a thread about it tells me that it's an extreme event for you.

As a one off, 2 bottles over 6 hours happens. I hope it made the cooking more fun

Enjoy today and stop feeling bad.

Delphiniumandlupins · 27/07/2025 15:49

saveforthat · 27/07/2025 15:43

Full English is my choice.

Irn bru and a Mars bar.

PreciousTatas · 27/07/2025 15:49

I wouldn't jump to it being an issue, if it is as you say, a one off. Unhealthy, a bit irresponsible for an adult, but not the end of the world.

I did something similar after a late miscarriage, ended up waking up in hospital absolutely mortified (I was not a drinker at all and one bottle of wine completely floored me).

BUT I would say that the only people I've know in real life to talk often about how much they've drank, when they've drank, making excuses about drinking, seeking reassurance that it is normal or not that bad, have all had significant alcohol problems.

MrBallenIsaFittie · 27/07/2025 15:49

I drank 2 bottles of wine last night between 6-11pm 🤷‍♀️
I also intend to have a couple of glasses tonight.
So shoot me, I know I am not an alcoholic!

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 27/07/2025 15:50

Jeeez people on Mumsnet love an opportunity to look down on someone. Get yourself to AA pronto and never do it again.

drink lots of water and don’t give it another thought. Nothing bad happened.
