Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 14:57

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

Hardly something to be proud of! As I clearly said. Each to theor own.
Reminds me of that phrase...to argue with a fool.... sure you can finish this for me

This made me chuckle - that you are seriously putting this forward as a reason why no-one should disagree with you 🤣🤣🤣

Binge drinking is a form of alcoholism. In medical terms we also consider it self harm. No sane person would put their body through 2 bottles of wine and think that's okay for their health, comes here looking for sympathy! What she needs is therapy to deal with whatever is possessing her to harm herself like that. And that a fact. Don't bother telling me that's judgemental, it ain't.

This in spades. ^ No good arguing with people though @Elephant788 Anyone who thinks it's normal, and 'perfectly OK' to neck 2 bottles of wine in one sitting is really not worth arguing with. No-one with any common sense would say it's OK. I am baffled that anyone is trying to insist it's all right. They're embarrassing themselves. Blush

No way is it OK, and as for the people mocking and deriding the posters who are saying it's too much - well, this tells me a lot about them. Wink

A quick Google search tells you everything you need to know. 2 bottles of wine in one sitting is very bad for you.

Drinking two bottles of wine in one sitting is considered excessive and potentially harmful. It can lead to alcohol poisoning, hangovers, and long-term health problems. While moderate wine consumption might have some benefits, consuming that much alcohol at once carries significant risks.

Some people on here need to stop justifying it, making light of it, and taking the piss out of people who are saying it's too much. As I said, they're embarrassing themselves....

Calm down, it’s an online forum with people with differing opinions, strangely enough.

I’ve chuckled as well! If that helps.

Don't let people on here make you feel like crap. It's clearly a one off. Give yourself a break honestly. No one is perfect.

Zues · 29/07/2025 10:59

Op, what you have is a classic case of booze blues. You’ll be ok by tomorrow. Would like to say that most of us have been there n done that throughout our lives, but that will cause an earthquake from everyone jumping on their soapboxes to berate further! So I’ll say “some of us”. So Don’t worry about it. As long as you had fun while you were drinking it, no harm done! Totally get the anxiety. But that’s what happens. Some people drink and feel fine, others drink and feel like the world is ending the next day. I’m the latter. Few cans of beer, next day I’m terrible. Happy when doing it, but the comedown is a bitch! Enjoy yourself. Live your life how you see fit. So you had a couple of bottles of plonk. Big deal! Rest up, tomorrow it’ll just be a distant memory 🥰

Zues · 29/07/2025 11:01

Bet your dinner turned out a treat though! 👍😂

willitevergetwarm · 29/07/2025 11:30

Ignore all the "you have a problem" posts OP.

You've been under a lot of pressure recently and you are entitled to let your hair down once in a while. You fed everyone, put yourself and your children to bed and got them up to go to their Dad's. You didn't text anyone you shouldn't have done. Yes you feel crap, but that will soon pass and you probably won't ever do it again.

I would say that a fairly high percentage of adults have done this at least once since their teens. I know I have quite a few times and NO I'm not an alcoholic before anyone starts. I can take it or leave it I just choose to take it on some occassions.

I'm honestly in awe of how many people on MN swear that you have an alcohol dependancy because you like one or 2 drinks (or bottles in this case 😂)

Squishymallows · 29/07/2025 11:30

I couldn’t manage 1 bottle!! 3 glasses would be my complete max

ellie09 · 29/07/2025 11:35

I could easily drink 2 bottles over the course of the day.

Thats why I dont buy two, and only buy one to share with DP.

Very strange isn't it.

I haven't seen anyone say that this is normal or 'perfectly ok', apologies if I've missed those posts.

The OP herself doesn't think it's normal (it's a one off for her) or ok, that's why she's posted. I do think most people can probably recognise that the she has done something pretty stupid and rather than making her feel any worse than she clearly already does, are perhaps trying to help her deal with it and move on. It's not exactly helpful to her to keep kicking her when she's down, or for a PP to call her an 'alky' based solely on this thread. Some people really seem to get a kick out of that in the name of 'honesty' and 'facts' when it's merely opinion and guesswork.

I think 3 glasses is 1 bottle! Or 2 and a half, depending on the size of your glass. You could drink a glass just peeling potatoes! Especially if you have the radio on and a great upbeat song comes on. Op, you were just making dinner, letting your hair down, dealing with stresses and having some me time. It’s allowed. And perfectly normal! Don’t feel guilty about it

Begaydocrime94 · 29/07/2025 12:18

People freaking out over two bottles of wine on a Saturday... ah bless. You'd be horrified at how much my partner and I drink. We're both dependent on alcohol so it is what it is, we encourage each other to take days off (don't really drink in the week) and to limit it really but managing the consumption is a lifelong slog, a constant struggle, literally a daily battle to stay on track.

For those of us who are in deep, it's our responsibility to manage and most people who are dependent or addicts are generally self-aware... a lot of the time we're just doing what we can to get through life. Gleefully and opportunistically diagnosing strangers online with alcoholism never seems to be out of actual concern or understanding of how devastating actual addiction is

Zues · 29/07/2025 12:56

Good luck to you Begay, an honest and frank answer. Life is tough for most people. Seems like everyday there’s always another “blip” to deal with. We get through each day the best way we know. Everyone has struggles, including OP, but for people to kick her when she’s down with their holier than thou approach is just plain vicious. She had a drink so what. Obviously just trying to get through her day, whilst going through an extremely bad time with her partner, and still trying to look after her kids, clean the house, deal with housework, keep kiddies safe and happy….if that was me I wouldn’t of stopped at 2 let me tell you! Life is bad enough at times without these perfect keyboard warriors looking down their noses and making it worse!

You think drinking 2 bottles of wine is perfectly normal?

you need to google the definition of binge drinking

For the circumstances, yes. OP said it was a one off, so hardly necessary to join AA just yet. And, for the guide, I don’t need to google anything

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/07/2025 13:12

I think it depends on why you're posting this.

If you're posting: "how the fuck did I drink that much?" I'd shrug and say we've all done similar, as long as you're not doing it every weekend it's not the end of the world. It's fairly easily done when cooking with family/friends around.
If you're posting in a "tee hee, wine o'clock, look at me I'm such a naughty girl" way, I'd think it's pretty lame and would back away and suggest that you find other kinds of hobbies.
If you're posting in an "I need help, I have a problem" way, then I think you've taken the first step.

The question is what you want to get from posting that you've drunk two bottles of wine on your own. Are you worried about it?

40YearOldDad · 29/07/2025 16:55

I think people are throwing the word 'alcoholic' around a bit flippantly here. Two bottles of wine wouldn't even be classed as a drink for most alcoholics. Come back when you've seen someone polish off a bottle of vodka straight before 8:00am and then wander over to the off-licence for another 8 cans for breakfast.

Is it perhaps a little excessive, perhaps. But I'd put good money that most people commenting here have been off their trolley drunk at some point in their lives.

PicturePuzzle · 29/07/2025 17:21

Having read all the OP's posts, it does read to me like this may be a blow out so to speak. There's a lot going on in her life and maybe she wanted to forget for a while.

It is self harm at that level but how often she does it is key. I have done this in the past as a coping mechanism. It wasn't correct, it's not good but sometimes life can be incredibly s**t. The key is to catch it, know what it is and don't let it happen too often.

I hope you are over the hangxiety OP. Sounds like you didn't do anything stupid or hurt anyone.

I can’t imagine being quite so confidently ignorant. I suppose it must be nice in a way. Being so dumb but also so sure of yourself.

This is sooo very apt - and hilarious 😁

Not at all, just facts, no need or reason to be judgemental. Don't really have time or space to sugarcoat anything in this life!
There's always therapy if that's what shes looking for! Unlike you, am honest and won't encourage bad behaviour like that, in the name of 'support'

“Encourage bad behaviour” Wow! You do realise you are talking to an adult - not a 2 year old.

So all these therapists and councillors out there will tell their patients who are struggling with life that they are “behaving badly” and that they need to just get a grip? And this will help them somehow - not cause more shame?

I assume you’ve lived a fairly sheltered life to not realise that MILLIONS of people are struggling right now. People who don’t have a support network or someone to call when they feel low. People with no money. People who have come from disadvantaged upbringings and naturally self medicate due to past traumas. Go and crawl back under your rock and be mindful not to give any advice to anyone who’s at a low point.
