Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 14:57

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

Thank you for showing the way, truth & light, bringing Insightfulness & enlightenments to those whom most surely can cause more harm than good, by taking a stance of judgement
Really helps rebuild faith in human beings, when understanding empathetic souls, like your good self, make a stand 💚

@Elephant788 you have absolutely no idea about alcoholism. I'd pipe down if I was you.

I think people are throwing the word 'alcoholic' around a bit flippantly here. Two bottles of wine wouldn't even be classed as a drink for most alcoholics. Come back when you've seen someone polish off a bottle of vodka straight before 8:00am and then wander over to the off-licence for another 8 cans for breakfast.

Is it perhaps a little excessive, perhaps. But I'd put good money that most people commenting here have been off their trolley drunk at some point in their lives.

I agree, somebody is not an alcoholic just because they had a little too much to drink now and then.

I over indulge every few months or so - it certainly doesn't mean I have an alcohol problem.

You know you have a serious issue if you are drinking most nights or days of the week, or when you do drink, you drink to blackout.

I couldn’t manage 1 bottle!! 3 glasses would be my complete max

3 large glasses is a bottle of wine so it depends on the size of your glass

Yeah in our house a bottle of wine is 6 glasses

caramac04 · 30/07/2025 15:54

@Squishymallows i must admit I get 5-6 glasses from a bottle at home but on the rare occasions I have wine in a pub it’s probably 250ml
Off the point but if I go out for lunch in a pub I have tea as I’m too tight to pay pub wine prices.

Off the subject I know, but when I go for a pub lunch I drink wine rather than tea because it really bugs me to pay £3+ for something that costs about 20p to provide! 😄

caramac04 · 30/07/2025 17:41

At our local we can get two main meals and 4 cups of tea for just under £24. A 175ml glass of wine is £6:50.

This in spades. ^ No good arguing with people though @Elephant788 Anyone who thinks it's normal, and 'perfectly OK' to neck 2 bottles of wine in one sitting is really not worth arguing with. No-one with any common sense would say it's OK. I am baffled that anyone is trying to insist it's all right. They're embarrassing themselves. Blush

No way is it OK, and as for the people mocking and deriding the posters who are saying it's too much - well, this tells me a lot about them. Wink

A quick Google search tells you everything you need to know. 2 bottles of wine in one sitting is very bad for you.

Drinking two bottles of wine in one sitting is considered excessive and potentially harmful. It can lead to alcohol poisoning, hangovers, and long-term health problems. While moderate wine consumption might have some benefits, consuming that much alcohol at once carries significant risks.

Some people on here need to stop justifying it, making light of it, and taking the piss out of people who are saying it's too much. As I said, they're embarrassing themselves....

Thank you for this comment! Much love ❤️ 😍

Don’t sweat it. It sounds like a one off, you’re not going to do it again and you’re going through a hard time. The kids were ok.

LittleGwyneth · 30/07/2025 21:13

Anyone who has been to a wedding, had a few glasses of champagne at the start, drunk wine through the meal and had a cocktail at the end had drunk the same amount of alcohol. Of course you shouldn't do it all the time - not least because it's clearly given you terrible hangxiety, but it's not a crime and it's certainly not a sign that you're an alcoholic.

Being an alcoholic is about compulsion, not rare binge drinking, and the perpetual misrepresentation of alcoholism on MN is extremely annoying. This is much the same as eating a whole cake - not ideal for your body but not a crime.

It isn’t calling a spade a spade to call someone an alcoholic for drinking two bottles of wine as a one off. As someone upthread pointed out if you go to a function such as a wedding, during the course of the day you’ve probably drunk the equivalent, although over a longer period of time. The detrimental effects of alcohol are cumulative and those warning that OP has damaged her liver are quite simply talking out of their arses.

I mean as long as you're not doing it every Sunday why not? I could drink two bottles of wine over six hours, I'd be reminiscent of a cave troll the next day if I did, but that never stopped me in my twenties lmao.

Inb4 people come in and start accusing you of being a rampant alcoholic. Didn't you know on Mumsnet you're a raging alchie if you don't get horribly squiffy from a single teeny tiny glass of fizz?

I thought real MNers could only manage a sniff of sherry?

Nobody is embarrassing themselves at all. What you’ve done is taken that quote out of context. It’s intended to warn those who are doing this on a regular basis long term - not what OP has done as a one-off. The effects of alcohol are cumulative over time and usually by the time symptoms appear you’ve done significant damage to your liver and probably other organs including the brain. If OP was binge drinking on a regular basis then she’d be at risk, but as a one off it’s ridiculous to suggest she’s putting her health at risk if she normally drinks moderately and within recommended limits.

No. But her liver will recover. Can’t say the same for your sanctimonious (and erroneous) advice.

Just because one equally deluded poster agrees with you, doesn’t mean you’re right. I see you are ignoring the multiple posters explaining why your comments are not just unhelpful but utterly incorrect. You are making yourself look very silly and uneducated.

@Elephant788

lighten up, hun. I think you could actually do with a few glasses of wine or a couple of cocky-t’s.
