Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 14:57

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

There is no “accusation”

I am the child of a parent who had a problem with alcohol

it is not an “accusation”

Me too which is why I know what true alcoholism is. It’s not a one off session, it’s years of insidious drinking that ruins lives and relationships.

RampantIvy · 27/07/2025 16:07

No. I can't even mange one. I would be ill after one bottle and horribly ill after two. Ignore the posters who get drunk after half a thimble of wine. I do drink, but in moderation. However, it's worrying that you can still feel OK after one bottle.

Didn't you share the wine with your parents?

Berlinlover · 27/07/2025 16:07

It wouldn’t be normal in my world but everyone is different.

Ps toast and marmite and a couple of paracetamol washed down by lime and soda always sorts my hangovers out. Although perhaps I shouldn’t admit to getting hungover lest I’m labelled an alcoholic 🙄

Full fat coke….. to add to that!

Radioundermypillow · 27/07/2025 16:08

If I was in a place where I could sink 2 bottles of wine without even noticing I would take a look at my drinking and probably knock it on the head for a few weeks.

Sugargliderwombat · 27/07/2025 16:08

ClarasSisters · 27/07/2025 16:07

Can you clarify please - you shared 2 bottles of wine with 2 other adults? Or you drank 2 bottles entirely alone? One of those is less of an issue than the other.

And the 'I can drink a bottle and still be ok', how often is that happening? Regularly sinking a whole bottle by yourself would suggest to me that you do indeed have a problem with alcohol.

Your first option is two Large glasses per adult over 6 hours.....absolutely not an issue at all so she definitely means 2 bottles to herself.

Presumably because the story is a fabrication?

Or presumably, like me and plenty of others I know, call any roast a ‘Sunday Dinner’. I could make a roast chicken dinner on Wednesday and still call it a ‘Sunday dinner’. No fabrication necessary.

Zov · 27/07/2025 16:09

Not gonna lie, this would have killed me. Half a bottle is my limit. 2 bottles of wine is crazy @Isitchristmasyett !!!

NellitheNelephant · 27/07/2025 16:09

Isitchristmasyett · 27/07/2025 15:00

Really?

Yes, I agree. This might be the first time you noticed it.

You would have had to keep going back to fill your glass or take a swig. That speaks to more than just enjoying a tipple, that sounds more like a compulsion. We could be wrong, of course. If it is true you'll start to notice it more and more.

Full English is my choice.

I suppose you have a point - a bit of bacon is a cure for most things.

AddictedToBooks · 27/07/2025 16:11

It's obvious that it's a one-off and you're going through some serious emotional stuff right now, so don't beat yourself up over it and don't let some of the extremely judgy comments you've received feed into making you feel worse.
If it wasn't a one-off, you wouldn't be bothered about it.

I've been in a deeply emotional state before a couple of years ago and I opened a bottle of wine and thought "f*ck it!" as a kind of release valve. In my case, it was a really tasty Malbec and I was listening to music and watching music videos and because I was tipsy, it felt like a non-issue when I opened the second bottle. I was just enjoying that particular wine and felt good in those moments.

I did it once, and never again, I felt the anxiety you feel the next day but after a day of being kind to myself, everything was fine.

If you can, get something carby and a bit salty to eat, rehydrate yourself and try and have a shower and a hairwash and then snuggle down, watch a feel-good movie and try and have a sleep.

Most of all - stop feeling bad about it - you've done nothing wrong - you just had a blow-out that's all. You've let your steam off x

I will not be doing this again in a hurry, feel absolutely awful

Sometimes we need a wake up call. Drink absolutely loads of water for the rest of the day and night. Honestly, I'm 42 and a glass of wine affects me so much the next day. I was one of those bottle of wine before we went out early twenties gals.

MidnightMeltdown · 27/07/2025 16:12

No. If I drank more than one bottle then I’d throw it back up. Not a chance I could keep two bottles down. I think it depends on BMI though. Bigger people can usually drink more.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 27/07/2025 16:13

I’ll drink two bottles of wine tonight if that will make you feel better OP. Clutch your pearls everyone! Oh and I might make a Sunday dinner on Tuesday! The horror.

CountryMouse22 · 27/07/2025 16:13

I'd be comatose!

Well deal with that issue and stop projecting your issues on to others.

2 bottles over 6 hours would make me merry but not the kind of “don’t want I’m doing” drunk that some posters seem to suggest! Can easily drink over a bottle at an evening work social, plus whisky later in the evening! And work the next day!

I don’t do it all the time, of course and have water / soft drinks as well to avoid a terrible hangover the next day! Doesn’t make me an alcoholic or a bad person and I don’t feel guilty about it!

Don’t feel bad about drinking 2 bottles during a nice Saturday afternoon and evening!
As others have said it’s only a glass an hour!

It's absolutely normal for 2 bottles of wine to make someone absolutely hammered! I would be puking in the kitchen if I had done that. I don't think normalising that kind of binge drinking is smart.

We’ve reached the peak. Weight has been crowbarred in.

Elmaas · 27/07/2025 16:16

OP, god love you.
Sounds like a grief blow out.
You will indeed be on a hell of a downer today.
Alcohol is such a mood depressant.
Be very careful of it.
Forgive yourself.
You will feel better tomorrow and better again on tuesday.
Wine is the most shocking of hangovers.
I had one two months ago on a girls reunion.
Haven't had a glass since.
Forgive yourself and move on.

Plenty of water, orange juice and sea salt will balance your electrolytes.

We've lost sight of what a healthy 15 units looks like.

Actullay, size does make a difference.

Don't listen to all the judgey comments. All lot of us have done it at some point. As long as its not a regular thing.

Well yes, that was what I was getting at.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/07/2025 16:21

Back in the day, easily. These days, not so much. Chill op, now and again is not an issue (imo). MNetters will have you phoning AA though, so be warned.

I was going to say that I admire the pp’s style: ‘I can’t drink that much because of my petite slim figure’. Top marks!
