Do you make your bed?

Flora73 · 26/07/2025 22:43

I do, every day. It looks so untidy and I love getting into a made bed.

But I was talking to a friend earlier and she never does. So just wondered what the general consensus was.

Make your bed (at least 5 days out of 7) = You are not being unreasonable

Don’t make your bed = You are being unreasonable

Of course I make my bed…and I air it first too. Like you say, it feels nice to slip in between straightened sheets but mostly it’s a hygiene thing. Airing your bed properly (ie: taking the duvet fully off) reduces the proliferation of mites and allergens etc. if you’ve taken it all off, you might as well quickly straighten the sheets before you put it back on again. A survey of around 1500 people also showed that those who made their bed were a lot more likely to report good sleep (bearing in mind that correlation and causation are not the same!). So yeah - making the bed feels like a no-brainer!

50lbstolose · 27/07/2025 00:22

The first thing I do when I get up is make my bed.
I would fold the duvet back but I have a cat who likes to sleep in my be during the day, so I pull the duvet up, fold the top, and straighten the pillows.

It take no time at all. Why wouldn't you?

Caulipower · 27/07/2025 00:24

i never do

Chickoletta · 27/07/2025 00:25

Always. The rest of the room (and most of the house) may be in chaos, but the bed is always tidy and ready to get into/ I’ve also instilled this into my DCs as a basic morning chore. It just feels right and civilised.

I fold the duvet back so it airs but looks neat.

Exactly what I do! But as I live in a bungalow and my bedroom is next to the lounge, I have to remember to shut my bedroom door when people visit so they don’t think I am a slut!

milkandhoney2 · 27/07/2025 00:30

Sort of - straighten the bottom fitted sheet, fold the duvet back to air and I stand the pillows up to air too

LongDistanceClara44 · 27/07/2025 00:43

What does make your bed mean? I'm so confused by this thread. When I get out of bed it looks just like it does when I get in it? I straighten the duvet. Or do you mean change the bedding? I definitely don't do that several times a week

Velmy · 27/07/2025 00:47

Never did when I was young and lived alone. Found the feeling of climbing into a big pile of pillows/duvets/sheets etc quite comfy.

Nowadays I spend an absolute fortune on my bed, mattress, sheets, pillows etc. My last mattress was around 10k.

I turn the bed down in the morning and make it when I get in from work. Can't beat that feeling of sliding into it.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 27/07/2025 00:53

Every morning. First thing I do is air it by pulling back the duvet & opening the windows to let any trumps escape then I maje dure its made before i leave for work. It makes me happy to see it tidy.

SnowFrogJelly · 27/07/2025 00:58

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 26/07/2025 22:46

It's healthier to leave it "open" to air.

This is silly how is it healthier?

milkandhoney2 · 27/07/2025 01:03

SnowFrogJelly · 27/07/2025 00:58

This is silly how is it healthier?

Because beds get damp and musty, it keeps the bedding fresher if you let it dry out from the sweat you lose overnight
some countries air their duvets over the balcony daily

Negroany · 27/07/2025 01:03

EggnogNoggin · 26/07/2025 23:44

How does anyone not?

You just get out and fold the duvet back in place and tug the bottom corner down when you walk past it. Maybe fluff your pillow if you feel fancy.

Chuck cushions and blankets back on if you have them.

Ets, I'm still reeling from the thread where it turns out people don't wipe the counter after food prep for every meal 🙃

Edited

It's easy not to, you just don't.

I don't. Never seen the point.

Making your bed every day is associated with a higher likelihood of becoming a millionaire, with one study suggesting a 206% increase. This is because the habit of making your bed reflects a mindset of organization, discipline, and productivity, which are traits often found in successful individuals. While not a direct path to wealth, it's a small daily action that can set a positive tone for the day and contribute to a more successful mindset, according to experts.

I’ve made my bed every day without fail, and guess what, yes I’m a millionaire!

I'm a millionaire (which isn't as exciting as it used to be!), and I never make my bed.

Noshadelamp · 27/07/2025 01:08

Me and dh have separate single duvets. He always straightens his duvet but I never do mine.
You'd think seeing his side all nice would make me want to or think of it but it rarely occurs to me.

I do the same.

ExploringDreams · 27/07/2025 01:21

I air my bed while I get ready. I open the windows too to air the room. (They’re open all the time in the summer) Then make my bed when I’m ready and headed downstairs.

steff13 · 27/07/2025 01:22

Yes but not for a couple of hours. I didn't think you were supposed to while it was still warm.

SouthernNights59 · 27/07/2025 02:58

ClareBlue · 27/07/2025 00:06

It's an important thing to do. Whatever the day threw at you, when it's time for bed and you see a made bed it shows you achieved something just for you and that what you remember falling asleep. Get up, make your bed, and you've already done something good. Everyone should make their bed.

What a load of nonsense! I achieve lots of things in a day, making my bed (even if I did) wouldn't be considered one of them. I never think about what I have achieved before falling asleep, I have far more interesting things to think about.

zaazaazoom · 27/07/2025 04:45

I want to try a 10k mattress.
Apart from our house I've never owned anything worth more than 5k (our car though not anymore, I would probably have to pay someone to take it 😁).

alligatorshmalligator · 27/07/2025 06:59

Genuinely horrified at the amount of people who don’t make their bed every day

330ml · 27/07/2025 07:00

Rarely. I get up first so my DH does it after he gets up.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 27/07/2025 07:03

Yes, we all do.

Top tip- initially straighten pillows, line up duvet but fold it back at least halfway to properly air your bed first thing, then fold back later in the day.

Pricelessadvice · 27/07/2025 07:05

Yes.
In my mind, getting back in an unmade bed the next night would feel,’dirty’. (I know it’s not)

LavenderBlue19 · 27/07/2025 07:08

I leave it to air in the morning - plus there's usually a cat on it, so can't possibly disturb them.

Will pull the duvet back and straighten everything at some point during the afternoon/evening or if someone is coming over.

Mokel · 27/07/2025 07:09

I make it every day as looks neat. Plus that’s where my soft toys sit
