Do you make your bed?

Flora73 · 26/07/2025 22:43

I do, every day. It looks so untidy and I love getting into a made bed.

But I was talking to a friend earlier and she never does. So just wondered what the general consensus was.

Make your bed (at least 5 days out of 7) = You are not being unreasonable

Don’t make your bed = You are being unreasonable

Well we just have a fitted sheet and two single duvets. So do I straighten the duvets in the morning, is that making the bed? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

DuesToTheDirt · 27/07/2025 10:39

It's a duvet, so there's not really anything to make. Plus, I like it to air.

I once worked in Japan, where it is the custom to hang your bedding on a balcony or similar, then put it away in a cupboard and make it up in the evening. A colleague explained this, and I said, "Well, I can't do that, I'm at work." He said, "My wife does it," so of course I replied, "OK, I'll get a wife to do it for me!"

LizzyEm · 27/07/2025 10:45

I make sure the bottom sheet is on properly if it's coming off and then fling the bedcover to straighten it, but I fold it down to the bottom so the bed can air. It stays like that til we get in it.

EveryDayisFriday · 27/07/2025 10:58

I pull the sheets over, not neatly just to cover the bed. Although every other week, DH is sleeping in it after working nights so quite pointless.

OutandAboutMum1821 · 27/07/2025 07:03

Yes, we all do.

Top tip- initially straighten pillows, line up duvet but fold it back at least halfway to properly air your bed first thing, then fold back later in the day.

There is no "later in the day" though, I get up, work, don't go in the bedroom again until bed time. Seems pointless to make it just as you're about to get in it.

I honestly can’t believe how many people don’t make their bed! It’s literally a life basic! Why wouldn’t tYou?!

Why would you?

I also don't open my bedroom curtains. I know, right? Faints while clutching pearls

UpDo · 27/07/2025 13:08

No. I want it to air, so throw back the duvet. I also don't particularly like a 'made' bed anyway and will tend to burrow until comfortable.

So ‘later in the day’ can be easily adapted. I’m a home maker, so flip it back straight after the school run or after lunch with my youngest or after school depending on where else I am. When I worked FT I would flip it back before leaving for work. Even 1-2 hours of airing is beneficial. Or just do it at the weekend if time if really tight. I’d actually prefer to leave it neatly folded back all day until bedtime to benefit from the airing (unless I was expecting guests of course, then all duvets are properly back up!)

Definitely keep curtains closed during hot weather, all my curtains and blinds stay closed and the house stays much, much cooler.

Catarinabella · 27/07/2025 13:23

I always air mine, widow open for a couple of hours, but always make it, every day

So, you don't "make it" then?

I'm not a homemaker in any sense of the term, and I have more interesting things to do than think about making a bed that only I sleep in anyway. Once I've gig up, that's it until I go to bed.

Surely no more is exposed for airing when folded back than when I just leave it how it was what I got out of it? So, the impact is the same whether I fold it or just leave it.

WaltzingWaters · 27/07/2025 13:26

I shake out the duvet from the end of the bed, so it straightens up and looks fairly neat. So a 2 second making the bed. But I don’t spend ages tucking sheets in and putting lots of fancy pillows on or anything like that.

DustyMaiden · 27/07/2025 13:33

I make it and count the stripes on the duvet to be sure it is perfectly centred. Arrange the cushions.
Yes I do have issues.

Because people are different and there are pros and cons to making the bed up immediately after waking.

Letting your bedding air out and not covering it every day helps with the reduction of dust mites.

It’s also pointless in my home because it doesn’t stay made in the first place and we don’t use duvets when it is warm anyway.

Yes, I currently do make my bed as in fold it back and air it, then fold the duvet back up later.

I meant in a scenario like you say where you are out all day until you get back in it then yes, I’d actually prefer to leave the duvet folded back all day. Yes, I guess just leaving it scrunched up in a pile would have the same effect.

It’s actually tickling me talking this much about it all 😂 your bed and day, so totally up to you.

My eldest child had severe ezcema when he was younger and has a dust mite allergy, so keeping his bed aired and room dust free is especially important to me.

RH1234 · 27/07/2025 13:45

Every day, but for me I think it was a forces thing. Was always taught that making the bed is the first job of the day, by making your bed you’ve completed the first job of the day and off to a good start.

But generally each to their own. My wife doesn’t, so if I’m first out, it’s usually not made when I get home haha.

lazyarse123 · 27/07/2025 13:51

I pull it back to air it and then make it when I think about. It does look so much nicer when I make an effort. I have a white teddy that my mum bought when Woollies closed, he sits on my side when it's made. She's been gone nearly 30 years so I always think about her when arranging Ted.

Are you very young? You sound like a desperately edgy adolescent.

I remember being like this as a rather sad, slightly depressed teen and in my 20s. Living in a not-quite squalid mess that was symptomatic of my state of mind.

Caulipower · 27/07/2025 15:23

I agree with @Negroany, I’m not a depressed or edgy teen or 20 something, I just genuinely don’t see the point when I will be messing it up again tonight, it gets left in whatever state it’s in. Doesn’t affect my mental health or my state of mind

I actually pull it back , spray, then air ( always have windows open) then I make it properly once I’ve finished getting ready.

all the kids have to make their beds before anyone goes anywhere.

AddictedToBooks · 27/07/2025 15:32

I always make my bed - even as a teenager, I always made my bed before school even though I wasn't told to.

I love the look of a made bed, although in the day, I fold the duvet over to let the bed air and plump a nice pile of 4 pillows of varying softness on each side so I can make a "reading nest" for myself - I love my bed.

Ridiculous.

I'm 57. I don't live in any sory of squalor, nor am I depressed. I just can't see any point making a bed you're getting back into later or opening curtains you just need to close again later.
I open the living room curtains.

It really is only on Mumsnet that people get het up about this stuff.

Tinytigertail · 27/07/2025 17:09

Every day. Get up, let it air while I shower and get ready and then make it, it's literally a couple of minutes a day.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/07/2025 17:51

I do mine during one of my stretch breaks on WFH days or after i have had breakfast on the other days.

Creases in the bedding are hiding places for monsters.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/07/2025 17:53

Never, ever. Well - I do for estate agents photos or if someone is viewing my house. So I haven't made my bed for over 21 years now.
