Do you make your bed?

Flora73 · 26/07/2025 22:43

I do, every day. It looks so untidy and I love getting into a made bed.

But I was talking to a friend earlier and she never does. So just wondered what the general consensus was.

Make your bed (at least 5 days out of 7) = You are not being unreasonable

Don’t make your bed = You are being unreasonable

Yes. If I don’t achieve anything else in the day, at least I’ve achieved that.

Took me years to realise that simple thing.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 26/07/2025 23:24

Every day, even on holiday. On the very rare occasions that I don't make it, I make it before I go to bed. I can't get into an unmade bed.

(Made = duvet folded back nicely, pillows plumped and placed, sheet straightened.)

I always make mine, but turn it back to air a bit first. Then the cats jump on so I wait until it's feline-free to make up properly, which could be mid-afternoon.

They’re a bugger aren’t they? And they look so comfy you couldn’t possibly move them to make said bed!

Always. I turn back the duvet when I get up to air it, and make it before I leave the house — it takes 30 seconds.

EggnogNoggin · 26/07/2025 23:44

How does anyone not?

You just get out and fold the duvet back in place and tug the bottom corner down when you walk past it. Maybe fluff your pillow if you feel fancy.

Chuck cushions and blankets back on if you have them.

Ets, I'm still reeling from the thread where it turns out people don't wipe the counter after food prep for every meal 🙃

WhatsMyName25 · 26/07/2025 23:45

Yes, I do as others do pull the duvet back to air and my window is always open. The duvet is folded back on itself at the end of the bed.

CoCo19o2 · 26/07/2025 23:47

Every morning and I thank my self at night aswell. It always looks so cosy and inviting at bed time🥰

MH0084 · 26/07/2025 23:47

I can't function if my house is untidy. That includes making the bed everyday and making DC do the same.

Tink3rbell30 · 26/07/2025 23:49

Sometimes. But I read somewhere you're not supposed to and it needs air.

Teenagerantruns · 26/07/2025 23:52

Not normally ita just a duvet so normally just straighten it before bed. Sometimes if im in the bedroom getting dressed in morning l will throw it back on in a neater way...
Im old so when when l was younger it was all sheets and blankets so we all made our bed every morning.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/07/2025 23:54

Always. I usually air it while I shower, get ready, and dry my hair, make it while the straighteners heat. If DP’s up after me he tends to do it straight off rather than air it.

Sometimes the cat gets in and it’s later but it’s never not made.

Exactly this. Start of with the small easy things and your small achievements can only be surpassed.
Look up Admiral William McRaven Making your bed speech. It's an eye opener.
I air my bed by folding down the duvet for a couple of hours smoothing out bottom sheet and turning over the pillows.

Pancakeflipper · 26/07/2025 23:56

Yes. It's a duvet - it's not much of an effort (unless I'm doing it totally wrong)

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2025 23:59

Every single day. Feels so nice to get into a properly made bed.
I don’t have cushions or anything decorative on my bed for the reason that I’m lazy, anything other than the duvet and pillows to tidy would piss me off so it’s been plain!
I don’t air my bed and haven’t died yet although we do always have windows open so maybe that’s saved my life?!

domesticgodmess · 27/07/2025 00:01

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 26/07/2025 23:12

I leave mine 'open' with the duvet pulled right down for an hour while I have my coffee.
I agree that it seems to air it.

Couldn't sleep a wink in an unmade bed though.

But how can you not sleep a wink in an unmade bed? Surely if you get in and pull
the covers up it is ‘made’ again.

I make the bed sometimes, maybe once or twice a week as DH likes it but I actually prefer not to. If he is away I don’t make it at all.

I do make the bed if staying in other peoples houses. I hate when there are loads of cushions to put on top, I just leave them in a corner.

Nourishinghandcream · 27/07/2025 00:05

Yes, plus the bedding is changed at least weekly.
Also iron the bedding along with the rest of the clean washing (which is a MN nono!).

ClareBlue · 27/07/2025 00:06

It's an important thing to do. Whatever the day threw at you, when it's time for bed and you see a made bed it shows you achieved something just for you and that what you remember falling asleep. Get up, make your bed, and you've already done something good. Everyone should make their bed.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm doing it wrong too.

I'd be hard pushed to make it last longer than two actual minutes 😳

KOALABEAR12 · 27/07/2025 00:10

Making your bed every day is associated with a higher likelihood of becoming a millionaire, with one study suggesting a 206% increase. This is because the habit of making your bed reflects a mindset of organization, discipline, and productivity, which are traits often found in successful individuals. While not a direct path to wealth, it's a small daily action that can set a positive tone for the day and contribute to a more successful mindset, according to experts.

I’ve made my bed every day without fail, and guess what, yes I’m a millionaire!

sophistitroll · 27/07/2025 00:11

Always

ClareBlue · 27/07/2025 00:14

Well I've made mine everyday and I'm not😂

Pile of old shite.

It takes longer to boil the kettle and make a cuppa in the morning than it does to straighten a sheet and duvet!

It's got fuck all to do with organization, discipline, and productivity 🤣

I never make my bed, it I also generally struggle with picking up after myself and the house is untidy. I spend ages all the time tidying it up (and it’s not dirty) but I seem to always leave things out so whenever I walk into a room it’s messy.

it gets tidied up a short while later but it just therefore always feels a mess. Things like putting the cereal away or picking my clothes up off the floor.

I always make my bed, but I do put that down to many years in the cadets then TA

I used to be so so messy though. It has taken a long time to get myself there.

1 - Don't put it down, put it away. Easier said than done but I do try and do this with most things.

2 - Declutter - less stuff to clear away. Also clearer mind

3 - Good storage - I have 2 toddler DSs. I'm not 'mean' but I hardly buy them toys and they still have loads. I have a big laundry basket which all their teddies go into in the evening, then some kallax boxes and into the cupboards in the sitting room. Leaves it calmer. Also the second they grow out of something I sell it or give it away.

4 - I use a washing basket when cleaning a room. I put all the items that don't belong in that room into the basket. When I finish I then put those bits away. I found when I was putting them away as I went it took me so long to clean a room as I would get too distracted.

zaazaazoom · 26/07/2025 23:16

I don't. Mainly because I am a disorganised fucker

This 😬 is do sometimes though.. I really try 🙈

sarsaparillatree · 27/07/2025 00:20

Nope. DH does it. And it's got sheets and blankets. I loathe duvets.
Also, you are not safe from the bogey man under the bed with a duvet. You need to be properly tucked in.
