Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

Really easy to make your own. You basically just blend the almond/oats with water and strain.

MaryBerrysFannyHammock · 15/07/2025 18:35

I don't understand the concept of nut and oat milks full stop tbh. It's not nice unless full of sugars so, why?

Starpleked · 15/07/2025 18:35

Think how expensive it would be if it was comprised largely of almonds, most are around 2/3% almonds but water will be a huge amount.

I drink the sugar-free variety and I like it. I’ve never liked animal milks though. People like different things.

You need Plenish brand

I might look into this.

Because dairy allergies and intolerances are relatively common.
Also some people don't want to support the dairy industry.

The alternative "milks" behave in a similar enough way to fill the gap in the diet.

I ordered the Acid Watcher diet a while back, I mean basically you can eat bugger all, but it did emphasise very low dairy and non dairy milks, so I have been putting it off but thought I would start to try it, and bought these.

I have to say its not good in tea although I didnt mind it on its own when I had a sip. Although to be fair Im not supposed to drink tea on this programme apparently either.

Edited

I don't drink animal milk either. I just don't get though why nuts whizzed up with water is nice or useful? Does it have special nutrients or is it just to make your cereal wet? If so why not just use water? (I don't eat cereal either 😂)

Snorlaxo · 15/07/2025 18:42

The ones at the supermarket tend to have additives because supermarkets stock the cheapest brands in order to sell the biggest quantities.
My local coffee shop use Glebe Farm and the ingredients are water, organic gluten free oats (11%), organic sunflower oil and organic salt. My local Morrisons stock it too.

Yes Ive now realised that, was quite surprised the main ingredient is water!! 2% almonds as you say. The oat one is 10% oats. Im just not keen on the fact there are guar and other gums in them with other bits and bobs.

My son has allergies and plant milk works in baking, white sauce, cereal, hot chocolates and other “normal” foods.

The stuff you buy ready made has things like calcium and B12 added which is useful for some people, but basically I like a matcha latte in the morning and I’m vegan so I use it for that. I also use it for vegan baking. I wouldn’t drink knot on its own or anything.

You need Plenish brand

Ive just looked this up, only 3 natural ingredients, that would have been much better. I bought Alpro because I happened to see it.

Alpro My Cuppa is so good in tea. You definitely cant tell it is non dairy.

The main ingredient of every drink is water.

Yep, cows milk is like 87 percent water on average. The plant milks are aiming for a similar nutrient composition.

terracelane23 · 15/07/2025 18:50

If you can find one you’re happy to drink then I’d recommend it for GERD. It’s really helped me. I’ve been using it in cereal for years and I really notice the difference if I don’t have it for a few days.

JMSA · 15/07/2025 18:53

I have limited experience of non-dairy milk, because I only recently gave up dairy milk. BUT after pondering what would taste better in my tea, I plumped for Tesco value 50p soya milk. I find that the more basic things are, the fewer added ingredients there are. The Lidl and Tesco value soya milks were purer than their expensive counterparts.

soupyspoon · 15/07/2025 18:39

I might look into this.

If you do this then you need to make sure you’re getting enough calcium, vitamin D and idoine from other sources.

HotCrossBunplease · 15/07/2025 18:53

is your GERD properly medicated? I find that as long as I take PPIs I don’t have to worry about diet too much. Certainly not to the extent of avoiding milk!

littleburn · 15/07/2025 18:54

The cheaper oat milks typically have oils and guar gum etc. I get Plenish oat milk, which is just water, oats and salt. There’s another brand that’s also 3 ingredients, but the name escapes me. They stock both in Sainsbury’s and one or the other is usually on offer.

Edited to say the other 3 ingredient brand is California Farms.

marshmallowfinder · 15/07/2025 18:56

They all contain oil (apart from Plenish.) I do not want to be glugging down oil every day, so I give them a miss. V overrated in my opinion.

Yabberwok · 15/07/2025 18:58

I think that they all taste bad. Porridge flavour coffee, yuk.

However, if I did like them I would be concerned that there are a lot of additives and as ultra processed food are meant to be good.

Thats a good point because Im on very high calcium supplements anyway and need to ensure I get enough from milk too to make sure its the right amount
