Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

Oat is better for environment and tastes nice but they all contain oil, or curdle in coffee.

Buy a good 100% nuts smooth almond butter like Meridian and blend it with water for easy almond milk.

Still not good in coffee though. I've gone back to cows milk for that.

Oatley Barista was a perfect substitute - frothed lovely for cappuccino.

They are a bit verboten in some circles though.

You need Plenish brand

This. Plenish is literally Almonds and water. It's not cheap though.

I make my own yoghurt and eat tonnes of that so that's where I get plenty of calcium from.

Milk is baby food. We aren't supposed to drink it past weaning. Those that can are just plain weirdos ... or European. The two may be related ...

Then you're agree that people drinking milk are not weirdos and being a weirdo and being European are nothing to do with each other. And tht there is no 'not supposed to' about drinking milk, humans have harnessed foods of all types from various sources over time, its how we survive.

Oh dear. Saturday a bad day for jokes ?

bridgetreilly · 19/07/2025 11:50

There’s no milk at all in them, either.

TipsyPeachSnake · 16/07/2025 18:45

The term ‘milk’ is not synonymous with dairy. No regulations exist on what can be called milk.

You can ‘milk’ that for all its worth😂

Actually it is.

Go to Costa and understand why they call it oat drink

Incorrect. Costa make their own dairy milk alternative that they have called ‘oat drink’ but still also provide oat milk. I use several Costa’s and they all stock oat milk.

Zonder · 09/08/2025 19:54

Actually I'm pretty sure @SpunkyPombear is right, @TipsyPeachSnake

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/12/04/vegan-drink-oatly-ban-milk-court-of-appeal-dairy/

Oatly can't call their product oat milk because it's not dairy.

Unless it's from tits it's not milk

Read that back to yourself and realize how dumb it sounds...

This relates to milk as a trademark which is very different to the word milk being used as a descriptive. As previously states the word milk is not synonymous with dairy.

Examples:

Milk of human kindness
To milk it for all its worth
Land of milk and honey
Vegan Milk.
Don’t cry over spilt milk

That's not included in the court ruling on account of the fact that nobody is trying to sell the milk of human kindness!

Exactly! We can use the phrase Vegan Milk etc and there is no ruling against us saying it. If we went into a coffee shop chain and asked for coffee with oat milk that’s what we’d get. A barista would never say ‘we don’t have oat milk but we do have oat drink’
Don’t understand why people get so hung up about this.

It's not trademarked. https://www.thetrademarkhelpline.com/article/milk-its-not-a-trademark-and-would-you-want-it-to-be/

It's about a common sense approach to only call out food what it actually is.

Just because something is white and you drink it, doesn't make it milk.

Same idiots who actually thought packets of baby food was healthy and had to be told it's not.

Coconut milk?

Coconut milk?

Because it's not processed and because you use the word coconut before.

Open a cocunt and you have the coconut milk..

Have to process your oats by adding your rapeseed oil, stabilisers, added vitamins, water, salt etc.

Merryberrypie · 10/08/2025 12:04

You add water to make coconut milk

Same as if you make almond or oat milk you just add water. That’s how I make my own milk at home.

Brands that add extra ingredients do it change texture / taste / longevity. It is not necessary.

I believe the Plenish brand does not use any oils in its plant milks. Their soy milk is just soy beans and water.

soupyspoon · 10/08/2025 12:08

You dont have to add water to make coconut milk, you just process the flesh until it breaks down into liquid

8% soy beans hahahaha. Such mugs people who don't make their own or buy it thinking there is nutrition.

Apologies if anyone has already mention these, I'm quickly browsing and have skimmed the pages of comments, but.... I've found Lactofree really helpful, during menopause I've had odd reflux and gastric issues which I'd never had before, but since I've used Lactofree (also Lidl do their own version) it's been massively improved. Also goat milk was similarly successful, but rather expensive. So still the taste and benefits of milk but without the problems I'd had. Might not work for everyone but maybe worth a try 😁

Merryberrypie · 10/08/2025 14:39

I stopped consuming dairy due to the high levels of Casein and IGF-1 hormones it contains.

soupyspoon · 10/08/2025 14:42

What is the definition of high levels and what is this going to do to you?

I tried goat milk for the same reason but really disliked the taste. I don't drink tea so I can't comment on that, but oat milks are the best for coffee - I don't particularly like soy, pea or hemp, although almond milk is ok.
