Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

Unfortunately, a lot of advice is out of date.
I know of many women being advised to use calcium supplements by their GPs after a fracture and the advice is now out of date.

I don't know what 'silent reflux ' is to be honest.

If you have no formal diagnosis, why do your drs think you have it?

I have the symptoms of it, I dont think many GPs know what it is either. Im not on PPIs because of their diagnosis specifically, most WLS surgeons require their patients to take PPIs for life to protect the stomach so I was prescribed this following the surgery and I noticed that when I took the higher dose of them my relfux symptoms reduced in any case so conclusion between me and the GP is that I'll stay on the maximum dose.

If I miss a dose I really notice it. I just dont think its formally recorded on my records as a diagnosis or condition, Ive got quite a few conditions like that.

I know what has calcium in it, ex fatties arent food ignorant!! Ive always had a healthy diet, home cooked food, just too much of it.

I'm sorry you assumed I thought you were ignorant. I wasn't saying that at all, but I was focusing on the fact you were taking supplements, because it isn't that hard to get 700mgs calcium a day without dairy .

It is if you only have 15% of your stomach left and have to take PPIs which leach calcium out of you.

I appreciate you wouldnt know this but Im advised and guided by the medical requirements given to me by a medical team and Im also very well informed about what supplements I need and why.

So this thread is about almonds and almond milk!

Glebe farm barista oat milk or rude health oat milk are my favourites. Both have very simple ingredients and are very nice on cereal and in coffee.

To be fair you didn't give much info. You did just say you were looking at alternatives to dairy, then you said you had reflux and were on an anti-acid diet etc.

You can't really 'have a go' because I was trying to be helpful, not knowing all the facts.

Even if you don't take anything from what I've posted it may be useful to someone else.

Yes Ive now realised that, was quite surprised the main ingredient is water!! 2% almonds as you say. The oat one is 10% oats. Im just not keen on the fact there are guar and other gums in them with other bits and bobs.

TBF the main "ingredient" in animal milk is water too

Well the thread isnt about that to be honest!! I just happened to mention Im on supplements thats all and by the way its 1500mg a day supplementation for me and may well be for many others, they need to be guided by the medical advice they have too

Oh you have edited. I wasnt having a go. I was just politely saying that although you may think you are being helpful, Im fully aware of what I need , why I need it and the cost benefit trade off so your advice wasnt applicable, lots of what I need to take has other effects but the benefits outweigh the disdvantages, like most people on medication or supplements.

I don't drink animal milk either. I just don't get though why nuts whizzed up with water is nice or useful? Does it have special nutrients or is it just to make your cereal wet? If so why not just use water? (I don't eat cereal either 😂)

Do you use a type of milk?

Cows milk is about 87% water, most drinkable liquids are mostly water!

If you just whizz up nuts with no water, you get nut butter which is very thick.

The gums and things are annoying I agree. There are quite a few brands that don't add them - Plenish, Rude Health, some others I can't remember.

I use soya milk for milkshakes, iced lattes and cereal because it has a decent protein content.

I use oat milk in coffee because I prefer white coffee. I also use it for cooking, the brand I use doesn't taste sweet.

I use hazelnut or cashew milk in porridge because it tastes nice.

I use coconut milk in hot chocolate because it's bloody delicious.

Does that help? Is it really that difficult to comprehend people might like something different to you? 🤨

Yes I usually make my own nut butters, so if you add water it makes the milk?

You need Plenish brand

It's great that it has so few ingredients but it's SO sickly sweet!

I hate to tell you @soupyspoon as you're obviously health aware but calcium supplements are becoming 'bad news'

If you read the research on them there is a lot of new info saying they can clog arteries because the calcium causes hardening. Its laid down in the arteries in a way that calcium in food isn't.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist about your reflux? Have you had a camera down to see what's going on?

You really ought to as some reflux can be a hiatus hernia, other causes can be more serious like stomach ulcers, and worse.

I'd advise you take proper medical advice rather than a restrictive diet.

(I'm posting this as someone where two close family members have a hiatus hernia and a serious reflux issue (both seen gastro consultants and had endoscopy.)

Do you have the research for that? There are calcium supplements in lots of food, too. All white flour in the UK has calcium carbonate added, for example. Calcium carbonate is the same form used in supplements.
It's also the main ingredient in many heartburn medicines like Rennies.

soupyspoon · 15/07/2025 20:05

Yep, just whizz it up with some water! If your nut butter isn't very smooth you'll need to strain it, too.

It means you don't get the added calcium and iodine in the fortified milk versions but you can get them some other way.

Try the ‘plenish’ range - no nasties

teraculum29 · 15/07/2025 20:17

OP,
if you don't mind Soya milk, Aldi's essential have no additives and it's only 50p

Iamthemoom · 15/07/2025 20:19

Rude Health has minimal ingredients and tastes the best imo. But we use it pretty minimally as no oat milk is great nutritionally but we don’t drink dairy milk.

Almond milk is not full of almonds!!!

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 15/07/2025 20:25

Many oat milks don't. Plenish is just oats water and a teeny bit of salt, brown oatly similar and there are others. Like anything there are always over processed versions, just read the ingredients before you buy.

BadDinner · 15/07/2025 20:29

MaryBerrysFannyHammock · 15/07/2025 18:35

I don't understand the concept of nut and oat milks full stop tbh. It's not nice unless full of sugars so, why?

I have chronic urticaria. Unfortunately milk is a trigger. I love milk, but now have to use the inferior alternative scam 'milks'.

Don't knock it if you can tolerate dairy, you're blessed!

I'm sad I can't have the milk. Alternatives don't give the tea or coffee that nice comforting heaviness. Winter this year be shite, with no nice comforting tea. Forget hot chocolate, tastes awful.

scritter · 15/07/2025 20:30

Coconut milk had me fooled until I realised how full of shite it is. I switched to coconut block or making my own.

IcedPurple · 15/07/2025 20:36

soupyspoon · 15/07/2025 18:39

I might look into this.

I make it using almond butter which is even easier. It does separate in the bottle after a few hours but nothing a bit of shaking won't fix.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2025 20:37

I started to develop GERD. Keto cured it completely. I drink all the milk I want! If I eat bread at Christmas or whatever, it’s back.

What have you been using, I only see water and coconut in coconut milk?
