Almond milk is not full of almonds!!!

Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

I think that they all taste bad. Porridge flavour coffee, yuk.

However, if I did like them I would be concerned that there are a lot of additives and as ultra processed food are meant to be good.

Agree with you there. Coffee flavoured porridge on the other hand is actually quite nice.

I hate the taste of cow's milk in coffee now that I haven't used it in years. It has a really thin taste whereas oat milks, specifically Oatly but also Califia farms and Minor Figures, have a really creamy composition. They are about the same in fat and calories as a cow's milk, but infinitely more sustainable and also containing beta-glucans which are good for your cholesterol, unlike actual dairy products.

I thought this is a great comparison site:

I started to develop GERD. Keto cured it completely. I drink all the milk I want! If I eat bread at Christmas or whatever, it’s back.

Yes definitely better after avoiding bready or gluteny or wheaty type products, which Im not really meant to eat anyway.

Think how expensive it would be if it was comprised largely of almonds, most are around 2/3% almonds but water will be a huge amount.

2/3???? Noooo. Try 2-5% almonds. The rest is water and maybe trace sodium in the food stuff. Lots of other stuff in the cheap stuff. But the actual almonds are a very small %

I don't understand the concept of nut and oat milks full stop tbh. It's not nice unless full of sugars so, why?

That’s not a fact. It’s your opinion. I like unsweetened almond and soy milks. Can’t eat oats so I can’t maybe an opinion on that.

cows milk has lactose which is sugar

I don't drink animal milk either. I just don't get though why nuts whizzed up with water is nice or useful? Does it have special nutrients or is it just to make your cereal wet? If so why not just use water? (I don't eat cereal either 😂)

Why use dairy milk in your cereal? Same reason. It tastes nice. It’s wet. It has some protein. What is there possibly to get confused about?

Ooh no it’s not nice with sugar in.

I can’t stand cows milk so I drink nut or oat milk. That’s the point of it.

Coconut milk had me fooled until I realised how full of shite it is. I switched to coconut block or making my own.

If it’s full of shite then you are buying a shite one. Buy a better one. A good one generally contains coconut milk, water, rice water, sea salt

Me too. Almond milk tastes almondy which is great.

Because some people can't digest any other sort. It's better than having cereal with water on.

EmBear91 · 15/07/2025 20:48

Depends what brand you get! Plenish is just almonds, water & sea salt. Same for all their milks (oat, soya etc) minimal ingredients :)

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 15/07/2025 20:49

If it was it would be solid. Try almond nut butter?

I’m vegan. I like oat milk in coffee but can’t stand it in tea! For tea I find soy milk works well for me. The gums etc are there to stabilise the plant milk, if you make your own you’ll need to give it a good shake and you may find it splits a bit in hot drinks.

Pigtailsandall · 15/07/2025 20:51

Ah I'm not sure why the link didn't work but here's the monstrously long one.

It's like every food in the world; buy the cheap crap version and it's full of shite and tastes shite, but buy the quality version and you get a quality product. Like the difference between hovis loaf of 'poke-your-finger-through' bread vs fresh bakery loaf of bread.

The ones at the supermarket tend to have additives because supermarkets stock the cheapest brands in order to sell the biggest quantities.
My local coffee shop use Glebe Farm and the ingredients are water, organic gluten free oats (11%), organic sunflower oil and organic salt. My local Morrisons stock it too.

Salt and sugar - not the healthiest milk to have out of choice. Allergy sufferers don't have the choice except take it or leave it.

If you do this then you need to make sure you’re getting enough calcium, vitamin D and idoine from other sources.

I am starting to worry about iodine, we don't get enough in our diets. Apparently it's an issue across the west. Less so in Japan etc where they eat a lot of sea vegetables and shellfish. It's a mineral nobody seems to think about much.

Because some people like it, the same as any other food or drink?
People love to tear down alternative milks or "be confused" by them for some reason I don't understand. They have been around for centuries and aren't any weirder than drinking milk from a cows udders or syrup mixed with fizzy water (most soft drinks) or fermented grape juice.

Yes agreed although just to be clear this isnt a milk bashing thread of any type. We are pro all milks here, highly inclusive on this thread, I wont hear a word against cows udders or smashed soya beans or anything like that.

Fibre also, not a mineral or vitamin but in the UK we dont get enough. 30mg a day I think we're meant to have or something like that

I ordered the Acid Watcher diet a while back, I mean basically you can eat bugger all, but it did emphasise very low dairy and non dairy milks, so I have been putting it off but thought I would start to try it, and bought these.

I have to say its not good in tea although I didnt mind it on its own when I had a sip. Although to be fair Im not supposed to drink tea on this programme apparently either.

My SIL became completely obsessive about not eating anything dairy . She already had the beginnings of osteoporosis so no calcium was a disaster . Her bones are like chalk now and break so easily ( broke her arm in 2 places tripping into the living room wall, broke her hip slipping on ice, broke her ankle stepping off the pavement). Everything takes months and months to even begin to mend .

Cod and haddock are very high in iodine.

I recently found out that cows milk is only high in iodine because of the iodine they add to the cows feed, and the iodine they use to clean milking equipment with! I wonder where we used to get iodine from before it was used in milk production.

AInightingale · 15/07/2025 21:07

I think egg yolks are a good source @howaboutchocolate. Apparently they used to add it to flour (probably because deficiency became such a concern a century or so ago - goitre and so on) but stopped doing that. But I think seaweed is the best source particularly wakame, the dried stuff. You can put it in miso as a sort of cup soup.
