Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

I don't understand the concept of nut and oat milks full stop tbh. It's not nice unless full of sugars so, why?

because some people cant tolerate the moo cows milk... and need something to wet the cereal...

is your GERD properly medicated? I find that as long as I take PPIs I don’t have to worry about diet too much. Certainly not to the extent of avoiding milk!

Its as medicated as it can be, Im on PPIs for life having had WLS, I think Im on the maximum dose. Mine is more silent reflux which is harder to treat via diet I read (in the book)

They all contain oil (apart from Plenish.) I do not want to be glugging down oil every day, so I give them a miss. V overrated in my opinion.

Theres no oil in this Alpro almond one but there is in the Alpro oat one

I wish I had done a bit more research. This cup of tea is awful

Try looking at other brands, like Rude Health

Really easy to make your own. You basically just blend the almond/oats with water and strain.

i've never had almonds as i'm allergic are they nice?

I only have the unsweetened versions, I can’t drink cow’s milk now.

Driftingawaynow · 15/07/2025 19:09

I make cashew milk at home for creamy porridge and coffee, it’s fab!

I don't drink animal milk either. I just don't get though why nuts whizzed up with water is nice or useful? Does it have special nutrients or is it just to make your cereal wet? If so why not just use water? (I don't eat cereal either 😂)

I have it in tea and smoothies.

Because people have different likes and dislikes?? I don't think carrots taste nice but I understand the concept of them Grin

minipie · 15/07/2025 19:16

They have gums and oils added partly to save money and partly because they are trying to replicate the thickness and taste of dairy milk.

Mauro711 · 15/07/2025 19:20

I use barista oat milk in my tea and coffee and think that works really well. You have to shake the box before you pour though, don't forget that.

Oat milk is better than almond milk for the environment, and it's also better than rice milk for your body.

defrazzled · 15/07/2025 19:20

yeah, all the Vegan food I see advertised is heavily processed and full of crap - whereas fruit, veg grains etc are never advertised and are all extremely healthy vegan food!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 15/07/2025 19:34

Try goats milk?

ThatchedCottageOwner · 15/07/2025 19:34

soupyspoon · 15/07/2025 18:59

Thats a good point because Im on very high calcium supplements anyway and need to ensure I get enough from milk too to make sure its the right amount

I hate to tell you @soupyspoon as you're obviously health aware but calcium supplements are becoming 'bad news'

If you read the research on them there is a lot of new info saying they can clog arteries because the calcium causes hardening. Its laid down in the arteries in a way that calcium in food isn't.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist about your reflux? Have you had a camera down to see what's going on?

You really ought to as some reflux can be a hiatus hernia, other causes can be more serious like stomach ulcers, and worse.

I'd advise you take proper medical advice rather than a restrictive diet.

(I'm posting this as someone where two close family members have a hiatus hernia and a serious reflux issue (both seen gastro consultants and had endoscopy.)

Yes I was for a bit, I like that, I actually went in today to get some and then saw the non animal milks and thought I would try them.

What's WLS?

I didn't read your post before my advice on seeing a consultant and also being aware of calcium supplements.

You can increase your calcium with sardines, salmon, chick peas, other pulses, green veg etc.

I'm dairy intolerant.

My son is dairy intolerant.

My daughter has full blown cows milk protein allergy.

Aside from that... I actually prefer the taste of oat milk (especially in coffee).

We use unsweetened oat milk (healthier for the children, plus I prefer it anyway).

This is the AI overview

While calcium supplements are often taken to promote bone health, they can also pose certain risks, especially when taken in high doses or without proper guidance. These risks include an increased chance of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes, as well as potential gastrointestinal issues like constipation and kidney stones. Additionally, some research suggests a possible link between calcium supplements and an increased risk of prostate cancer or colon polyps.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of the risks:
Cardiovascular Issues:
Some studies have linked calcium supplements, particularly those taken without vitamin D, to an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events. Research from The BMJ has shown that calcium supplements may contribute to calcium buildup in arteries, potentially narrowing blood vessels and increasing the risk of heart problems.

Gastrointestinal Issues:
High doses of calcium can lead to stomach pain, constipation, and diarrhea.

Kidney Stones:
Calcium supplements can contribute to the formation of kidney stones, especially in individuals prone to them.

Other Potential Risks:
Some research suggests a possible link between calcium supplements and an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Yes thank you, all my supplement requirements are set out following my surgery which I need to follow for life.

I also have suffered silent reflux probably for years now I understand it, probably since I was 18 but didnt realise and no doctor actually realised and I was diagnosed wrongly with asthma for decades. Im not sure I even have a formal diagnosis of GERD in any case.

Ive had endoscopy and colonoscopy which found nothing of concern.

Oatly barista is great in tea as it doesn't split when you put it in. Rude Health almond is delicious. I can drink it from the carton.

Weight loss surgery. I know what has calcium in it, ex fatties arent food ignorant!! Ive always had a healthy diet, home cooked food, just too much of it.

Unfortunately, a lot of advice is out of date.
I know of many women being advised to use calcium supplements by their GPs after a fracture and the advice is now out of date.

I don't know what 'silent reflux ' is to be honest.

If you have no formal diagnosis, why do your drs think you have it?

I'm sorry you assumed I thought you were ignorant. I wasn't saying that at all, but I was focusing on the fact you were taking supplements, because it isn't that hard to get 700mgs calcium a day without dairy .

MiddleAgedButterfly · 15/07/2025 19:46

I use Apro organic soya milk: contains just organic soya beans and water. No additives. I’ve been vegan for many years. because of animal cruelty in the dairy and meat industries.
