Im not sure what has happened here, I normally scour a product for ingredients, I dont usually buy stuff with strange stuff in it as a rule, not obsessively but generally because I just buy straight forward basic ingredients

But Im looking to see if non dairy milks might help my GERD so picked up almond and oat milks, thinking they were just that, mushed up almonds and oats

They are not!!

They have tons of strange things in them like gums and stabilisers and what nots. I dont mind the added vitamins and minerals so not talking about them

I should have checked

I dont mind the almond one, I have opened that one first but not sure I would buy again. It doesnt work in tea though.

I have the no sugars almond milk in hot drinks and protein shakes. It's definitely better in coffee than tea
I first had it when I was keto and losing weight, now I find cows milk too sweet in tea and coffee. I get through about 4 cartons a week though so in that quantity I doubt almond milk is good for me.

I seem to remember a Zoe podcast saying cows milk and plant milks are just neutral foods, neither good nor bad. It's just up to the individual what suits their gut best or if there's dietary requirements.

I’m dairy free and use Plenish or make my own ( adding a date to the juice makes it really lovely).
Use the Yuka app to check out ingredients- it gives scores for food and cosmetics and lists harmful ingredients - it’s a great app.

My SIL became completely obsessive about not eating anything dairy . She already had the beginnings of osteoporosis so no calcium was a disaster . Her bones are like chalk now and break so easily ( broke her arm in 2 places tripping into the living room wall, broke her hip slipping on ice, broke her ankle stepping off the pavement). Everything takes months and months to even begin to mend .

Its only for 28 days!!

Its meant to heal you enough to be able to tolerate things which have that effect on you. I have a fridge full of cheese in any case, going to be chomping my way through that later in the summer.

Another Plenish almond milk user here. I switched when I was on the strictest phase of the acid watcher diet, and have stuck with it since. I only really use it in my coffee (now down to one/two cups of decaf per day) or in an occasional fruit smoothie. We do have a milk frother which I think makes it more palatable. I like cows milk, but I do feel better for not drinking it.

Do you tolerate fruit ok if you have GERD, I find it awful for acid

Cant eat yoghurt either, terrible hearburn

@soupyspoonthe acid watcher diet is very prescriptive about what you can and can’t eat. You can have various berries but the non-dairy milk helps to counteract the acidity. I don’t get heartburn as much as a very gassy taste in my mouth (lovely Confused) and the acid watcher diet did help it. But it’s so strict, I managed it for a month, but no longer. Need to get my act together really and give it another go!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/07/2025 18:40

Because dairy allergies and intolerances are relatively common.
Also some people don't want to support the dairy industry.

The alternative "milks" behave in a similar enough way to fill the gap in the diet.

I think that sort of thing is obvious…it’s more that it’s clearly not milk. You can’t milk an almond. It’s basically water with stuff in it.

I know I got the books earlier in the year and just reading it made me feel depressed. I thought I would build up to it, over several months!!

I might just be ready to start the 28 day section now, give or take, I'll see how I get on.

If they had to put the constituents of cow's milk on the label, it would look just as weird. It contains lactose, a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose; emulsified fats with triglycerides being the major component; casein proteins (alpha-S1, alpha-S2, beta, and kappa casein), and whey proteins including beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, and bovine serum albumin.

Being both dairy and oat intolerant, I use soya milk. I like cashew milk, but soya's the only one that provides any protein (still far less than milk). Alpro does a full-fat, whole bean 'drink' that approximates the texture of milk pretty well and is great in coffee.

I don't understand the concept of nut and oat milks full stop tbh. It's not nice unless full of sugars so, why?

They mean those of us who are lactose intolerant can still have white coffee for a start. Or cereal with something like milk.

Meant to quote this not the one I did.

Exactly…”something like milk”, but it’s not milk.

Nope it's not. But when milk has a certain effect on you "something like milk" is a good alternative if you want to keep having things like muesli or white coffee.

What do you think cows milk is? 😂

The term ‘milk’ is not synonymous with dairy. No regulations exist on what can be called milk.

You can ‘milk’ that for all its worth😂

soupyspoon · 16/07/2025 19:27

Yes which is why we have nut 'butter' and lemon 'curd' or lemon 'cheese'.

And creme eggs

Milk thats not milk update...

I finished up the almond milk and have now started on the oat milk

Quite different. Very sweet, not sure I am keen on this, very creamy, thats probably all the guar gum and not keen on that either. I liked it, but its dire in tea again.

Today I bought the cheapy soya milk from lidl as recommended, once I get through the oat milk I'll try that one

I even blended the oat milk with some peanut butter and dried apricots for a drink, would that be described as a smoothie? I wouldnt say I really like smoothies but it was lovely, really nice.

OP posts:
Mirabai · 19/07/2025 08:58

I would call that a milkshake. I like smoothies but my favourite milkshake is: almond milk, 1 banana, ground cacao nibs, dates + optional peanut butter.

Soya milk is minging btw. The best is almond milk, oatmilk and pea milk.

lilyflower1803 · 19/07/2025 09:02

Just make your own or buy organic. Plenish are good, rude health too

Genevieva · 19/07/2025 09:06

Try traditional cows milk that hasn’t been homogenised. It’s much easier on the digestion and it’s natural.

This is a good article on oat milk.

Yes thats a good article, I might try the plenish versions of these things but am not keen to get oat milk again simply because of all the rubbish in it. I have it in some coffee this morning and I might as well be drinkig a black coffee to be honest.

Yes Ive now realised that, was quite surprised the main ingredient is water!! 2% almonds as you say. The oat one is 10% oats. Im just not keen on the fact there are guar and other gums in them with other bits and bobs.

You were quite surprised that the top ingredient in a manufactured drink was... water?

How else do you think they make it wet?

SerendipityJane · 19/07/2025 09:40

BeardOToots · 15/07/2025 18:45

The main ingredient of every drink is water.

Hemp milk uses about 1/3rd the milk needed for almond milk and 1/6th the milk needed for cows milk. Oat milk is about 1/10th of that needed for cows milks.

Facts for fans of the environment.

They have exactly the same issues. Have you tried milk that hasn’t been homogenised? A lot of people who think they have a milk intolerance actually have a processed milk intolerance. The more natural the milk, the easier it is to digest. Other people find they can tolerate goats milk more easily than cows milk. The advantage of real milk is it doesn’t contain any other ingredients. If you are near a farm that sells it you could even try unpasteurised milk. Trying different things for a period if at least a week will help you identify what the digestive issue is.

The EU wanted to restrict words like milk, cheese and sausage to dairy and meat products, but it seemed to fizzle out.
