If he'd said 'detention centres' i doubt many people would have reacted so strongly, even if they disagreed with the idea - but he's too old to be ignorant of the image 'Auschwitz' conjurers up, the reality of the concentration camps and the absolute dehumanistion of millions that occured there. He knew what he was doing.
There are still many of us alive whose relatives were forced into these places and i have nothing but contempt for anyone who'd reference them as a way of 'dealing' with other groups of people today, and agitating others into support.

It's become increasingly acceptable to certain groups in this country to essentially say 'death to all non whites'. They want 'their country back' and that means cleansed of melanin. Reddit and Facebook are quite open about this so he's only saying openly what's being said behind many a closed door. As someone who isn't white I am growing concerned. I was born here but I'm starting to worry that doesn't mean much to a certain demographic.

What a revolting, ignorant person. Gas ovens weren't the only things that killed people at Auschwitz, as the only survivor of the camp from my grandfather's family could have told him.

I would like to believe everyone thinks it’s a stupid question, but lots of comments on the Colchester Gazette Facebook page are supportive of the ex Mayor - so I’m afraid there are plenty of people who are not disgusted by this at all.
