I would like to believe everyone thinks it’s a stupid question, but lots of comments on the Colchester Gazette Facebook page are supportive of the ex Mayor - so I’m afraid there are plenty of people who are not disgusted by this at all.

You can see why the Romans moved the capital to somewhere more civilised.

As a wheelchair user he might want to remember that the Nazis gassed the disabled as well as the Jewish.

That was my first thought too.

"First they came for the illegal immigrants, and I did not speak out because I am not an illegal immigrant.
Then they came for the wheelchair users..."

its a disgusting comment and housing people in hotels isn’t impacting on the lack of housing

however, I also think dumping people (often with loss and trauma) in hotels- without hardly enough to feed themselves, no education, no activities, for years is also in humane.

A better system might well be ‘camps’ of some sort BUT high quality, with family sections, education, basic vocational training etc - but that would cost money ( to be of a decent quality) and it would cause outrage if one was being placed in YOUR town

Im from a town where the hotel was attacked and set alight by dick heads - the levels of hatred is vile.

I also work with UASC and the horrors and trauma they have faced would floor most of us - yet they want to do well, have an education, get work and live here

Well we did invent the concentration camp, so it's nice to see someone celebrating our history for a change.

I hope thats sarcasm.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/07/2025 17:59

I’d also add those things should be being provided to people in hotels

SerendipityJane · 15/07/2025 18:02

What;s wrong with celebrating our past ? Why do you hate Britain ?

(now that is sarcasm. I left plenty of space for the less bright to c'n'p that as a suggestion that someone else gets it. I have grown up treating Nazi baiting like a sport. As you'd expect from a Clash fan who marched for Rock Against Racism).

As you note, it can take a long time for asylum status to be settled. Leaving people in "camps" is not the answer. Also, "camps" would be easier for the racists to target.

SerendipityJane · 15/07/2025 18:02

it can take a long time for asylum status to be settled.

Especially if you don't bother.

Yes I agree - speeding up the whole process is obviously the answer but I just think there needs to be so much more support and community for those lingering in hotels isn’t impacting rooms - I’m not even sure I mean camps just something better than sitting in a Travelodge for 2 years

ghostyslovesheets · 15/07/2025 18:05

I have no idea where ‘isn’t impacting on rooms’ came from in that post!

If you don’t bother you won’t be in a hotel or a camp though

You can't argue with a man in a wheelchair 🤷‍♀️

I think Jane is referring to the last government's total failure to process claims in a timely manner.

I think you misunderstand.

I was pointing out that the previous government bothered as little as possible processing asylum claims. It's likely the entire effort was someone who came in twice a week and who had to wait a month for a replacement biro.

People who enter the country without the correct paperwork and who do not immediately claim asylum are indeed here illegally and should be treated as such. But there is a difference.

Boudicci destroyed Colchester. Wonder if she sacked Clacton on the way down?

Who says I hate it. I live here.

Being the inventor of such such a thing (a concentration camp) is nothing to be proud of.

Edited as I didn't read properly. Mea culpa.

True.

But as my wheelchair bound friend knows, you can argue with a woman in a wheelchair.

Sorry - yes I agree - with noting how many hoteliers with links to the previous government earned lots of money for offering their hotels as well

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 15/07/2025 17:49

Plenty of people are happy to openly agree with him on the Colchester Gazette’s Facebook page - and that’s shocked me more than anything.

Because native people feel hopeless. Nobody of any power listens, and they see migrants being put ahead of them, their culture being poo-pooed, and family and friends not being looked after. There's is a European wide crisis.

Ah, so now we see the real motivation ... he's prolly all upset because his snouty face wasn't near the trough.

I think we can all go home now.
