Because native people feel hopeless. Nobody of any power listens, and they see migrants being put ahead of them, their culture being poo-pooed, and family and friends not being looked after. There's is a European wide crisis.

What is a "native" person? What is their "culture"?

I’m English- how is my culture being poo pooed?

What do people sat in hotels have that we want?

As an example, did you not see the girl in Rugby who was not allowed to attend Diversity Day at her school because she was celebrating being English? How is that inclusive?

I've heard so many times "white people have no culture" when we really, really do.

Well, at least you are honest in your bigotry.

its a disgusting comment and housing people in hotels isn’t impacting on the lack of housing

however, I also think dumping people (often with loss and trauma) in hotels- without hardly enough to feed themselves, no education, no activities, for years is also in humane.

A better system might well be ‘camps’ of some sort BUT high quality, with family sections, education, basic vocational training etc - but that would cost money ( to be of a decent quality) and it would cause outrage if one was being placed in YOUR town

Im from a town where the hotel was attacked and set alight by dick heads - the levels of hatred is vile.

I also work with UASC and the horrors and trauma they have faced would floor most of us - yet they want to do well, have an education, get work and live here

Putting migrants in hotels as anything other than a short term solution while processing was silly. It's expensive and doesn't provide asylum seekers with what they need and affects hotel workers (as less need to be employed)
The problem is, as things are now, the UK government has to build/find alternative accomodation quickly and people will kick of of they think an asylum centre would be placed near them (people also kick of when the council creates hostels for the homeless and even children's homes to be fair).

Whereas a grim camp with barbed wire around the outside is apparently fine because it comes with the knowledge the people inside are really suffering.

AcquadiP · 15/07/2025 18:24

There is no possible justification for mentioning Auschwitz or ovens. Utterly vile.

I bet there is more (or perhaps less) to that story than meets the eye.

Just because it is on X doesn't mean it is true.

SerendipityJane · 15/07/2025 17:32

Well we did invent the concentration camp, so it's nice to see someone celebrating our history for a change.

Are you Spanish? Britain did not invent the concentration camp.

Nor did it invent the extermination camp, which is what Auschwitz was.

Unfortunately the Union Jack has been adopted by far right and facist supporters.

If it was English culture she was supposedly celebrating, she was wearing the wrong flag anyway!

It is true, although she wanted to celebrate British culture.

The school has since apologised.

Are there many natives who'd like to live in a travellodge on £49 pw?

To be fair, when I see that dress I think Britpop not fascist..you get the union jack flag everywhere - on cushions,.teapots etc. it's wrong that they sent her home though I can sort of see how it happened. Teachers are only human and some can be jobs worth's. But he got a full apology from the school, and am opportunity for her to give her speech and she got invited to wear it on a run. I would be tempted to let it go at that point. I don't know what more people want to happen.

As an aside my best friend from primary school was also sent home for dressing as a spice girl during non-uniform day but that was nothing to do with culture day/PC. Our school was just a bit mental about "appropriate" wear.

Why does that make you say 'just wow.'? She asked what a 'native' person was in the context 🤷‍♀️

Yes, the usual punching down, will not improve their lives one iota. They are always blaming the wrong people, as usual.

Fair enough. It was silly of the school to do that. I wonder if it was her own idea, though.

There is a crowdfunding being organised so she can buy a new dress for when she gives her speech in London on Sep 13th

There is a Tommy Robinson rally that day.

KateShugakIsALegend · 15/07/2025 18:40

Reading the article about the Mayor, I am put in mind of the Pastor Niemoller poem 'First they came for..' (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_They_Came)

I wonder if the Mayor, who appears to be using a wheelchair, realises what the self-styled Nazi 'Ubermensch' thought of people with disabilities?

The big flaw (beyond the moral issue) with setting the principle that you can treat 'lesser' people with contempt is that one day everyone might decide you, too, are lesser.

Yes you did get the Union Jack everywhere prior to 2015. I even had a cool Union Jack top around the time of the London Olympics - I was proud to wear it then. Now I wouldn’t dare in case people thought I was a Reform supporter!

morefamiliar · 15/07/2025 18:44

On FB groups for my local towns, attitudes like these are becoming increasingly common. Any business shuts - dozens of conspiracy theories about immigrants. The council will be opening a hostel for 'Boat People', etc. We've always had these nutters, but it seems to have grown a lot recently. Perhaps they're emboldened by the growth of Reform. Feels like something really dark is brewing.
