To be pissed off that my DH is not going to McDonalds now and now I have to cook?

DH was going out at 4pm to rake DS12's friend home. He suggested he get McD's on the way back for himself and the kids (he knows I have a salad prepared for myself and that I don't like McDs) I said great, I wont have to cook.
I was in the shower when he left so I rang him to check he knows what DD7 wants from MCDs. He said he doesn't want McDs any more, he's going to go to the new local chippy instead. I said but the kids don't like the chunky chips you get from the chippies and he said well he's not going to two different places.
I said great, I suppose I'll just have to cook them something.
He said he doesn't understand why I'm so bothered, I would have had to cook anyway icfhe hadn't suggested getting something and I said, because I wasn't expecting to, I'd written it off in my mind, I haven't thought of what to cook and it's now 16:20 on a school night.
He thinks I'm just being argumentative and that I should just cook or we shpuld just tell the kids to just eat the damn chips.

Who's right?

I bet all the people disagreeing with me are also the people who wonder why they're overweight because they 'eat healthy'

An average day of eating for me. Well today I had 2 slices of wholemeal toast, 2 poached eggs and some spinach on the side. For lunch I had a homemade 3 bean chilli and wholegrain rice and for dinner I had a garlic and herb chicken breast with some cheddar melted on top, a baked sweet potato. Always make sure I'm having some sort of bean/chickpea dish 4-5 meals a week, lean meat 3-4 times a week, a fair amount of eggs, dairy in moderation get 10 different vegetables a week and adequate protein and fibre. Maybe have bacon or red meat once or twice a week at most.

I love how getting adequate nutrition is an eating disorder according to some of you 🤣

I’m 5ft 8 and this morning weighed 64.9kg (about 10 stone 4). Nope not overweight, not even close to overweight but thanks for the massive assumption there!

@Purpleumberella

you eat a lot of carbs.

Carbs are important. We need them. Also we don’t know what Purple’s portion sizes are so can’t really know the quantity of carbs they have each day.

A school night means there's school the next day.
So a Friday or Saturday isn't a school night, neither is any other day where there's no school the next day.

It basically means they need to get to bed early bathed and prepared for the next day, any homework done etc

Edited

Totally agree Sunday is a school night. And by the same token, Friday is not.

She cooked what she liked and wanted to eat. eat. She didn’t like takeaways or ready meals.

@PopeJoan2

i hope that’s what it was rather her feeling any kind of pressure to do that, that she wasn’t labouring under the belief that’s what it takes to be a good mother or anything like that.

MsTamborineMan · 13/07/2025 20:16

I mean she mentioned sushi which always has venegetables, a roast which ways has vegetables, a katsu curry which is literally a sauce of blended up vegetables

I would also assume she didn't just serve a slab of pork belly with no side 🙄

Thank you, I thought it was fairly obvious I wasn’t just going to serve my children a plate of pork belly!

Purpleumberella · 13/07/2025 20:23

Wow, someone who doesn't know a sweet potato is a vegetable or the ingredients of a homemade chilli. It had carrot, celery, onion, tomatoes. Perhaps if you cooked more you would know that.

Yes, exactly like you didn’t know the ingredients of katsu curry or that roasts come with vegetables. Are you now seeing how ridiculous that was?

Perhaps if you cooked more, you’d know. 🤣

Oh dear, basic school boy error and now you outed yourself

Calories are not the measure of what makes a 'healthy' meal

And there is no such thing as a healthy meal, only a healthy diet overall.

Oh yes because I definitely said calories are the only thing that makes a healthy meal..... did you even read what I wrote or are you just trying to catch me out because I've triggered you for some reason?

Most people in this country are overweight so it's understandable so many people are disagreeing with me. I'm not really surprised. Someone commenting that I eat a lot of carbs as if carbs are the devil. Did you know the majority of blue zones in the world eat high amounts of carbs? Not all carbs are created equal.

She mentions that she makes sure to eat a variety of veg so I assumed she served that with the meals mentioned.

She assumed that because a poster didn’t list every vegetable they had eaten with meals (even meals that are literally made from vegetables) they hadn’t eaten any. I’m applying the exact same logic to her comment. Not listed = nonexistent.

ImAPreMadonna · 13/07/2025 16:28

Kids should eat the chip shop chips. They’re just chips, same as McDs and they are being fussy.

What? My husband hates chippy chips but happily eats fries. My daughter will eat chippy chips, but prefers fries. I love chippy chips but will live with fries if I have to.

Saying these are the same things is like saying mashed potatoes and boiled potatoes are the same thing. They aren’t.

Like I said. She didn’t like ready meals or takeaways. She liked to know what went into her meals. She enjoyed food. Eating fast food isn’t a sign of being cool or something, you know. It doesn’t take that long to cook meals from scratch. And the great thing is that you can batch cook which also saves time. I have some nice stuff in my freezer for days when I feel lazy.

I mean considering the average roast people eat in the UK is about 1000 calories its hardly a healthy meal. The likely lack of vegetables throughout the meals wasn't my only issue with it being classed as a healthy diet.

You might want to go back and read my post…because I didn’t say it was a healthy diet…I said it was all about balance.

I also explained the reasoning behind why my kids have eaten more processed shit than they usually would.

It is balance because ordinarily they eat a wide variety of regular home cooked meals, and when they have takeaway it’s sushi from our local Japanese restaurant. But yes they eat some processed shit occasionally because life meant my husband was stuck at the garage till gone 7pm on two different occasions this week. And because I’m trying to keep shopping to a bare minimum so it’s not wasted whilst we’re on holiday!

Aaaaaw dammit. I totally thought eating McDonalds was cool. That's totally why I eat it. I thought it was big and clever.
What can I do to feel cool again? Shall I start spraying walls or something? Please tell me what's cool, Pope Joan.

I really am, but I know it’s my problem not OP’s. I am old. I have always viewed Sundays as special when you eat really good food. MY mum was a hardworking single parent and all my meals were cooked from scratch. Sundays were viewed as special where we would always have nice Sunday food. I still think this way. I am shocked to think people eat McD’s on a Sunday but as I said that’s me. I can see I have offended others.

Edited

Do you cook every meal from scratch and make special meals on Sundays? You describe yourself as ‘old’, why is your mum your reference, as opposed to what you have done and do yourself?

I wasn’t referring to you. I was referring to all those who seem to be bombarding me with reasons why I should eat fast food on a Sunday.

I am sorry to have commented on your choice. It wasn’t fair to judge.

It’s not cool to have so many found hang ups inherited from your mother. Especially when you’re old. About time they were dealt with.

Of course it isn’t cool to batch cook. That’s not the point I was making. We are all different. My shock at eating McD’s on a Sunday is my thing. Why does it bother you so?
