To be pissed off that my DH is not going to McDonalds now and now I have to cook?

Sophiehoney · 13/07/2025 16:25

DH was going out at 4pm to rake DS12's friend home. He suggested he get McD's on the way back for himself and the kids (he knows I have a salad prepared for myself and that I don't like McDs) I said great, I wont have to cook.
I was in the shower when he left so I rang him to check he knows what DD7 wants from MCDs. He said he doesn't want McDs any more, he's going to go to the new local chippy instead. I said but the kids don't like the chunky chips you get from the chippies and he said well he's not going to two different places.
I said great, I suppose I'll just have to cook them something.
He said he doesn't understand why I'm so bothered, I would have had to cook anyway icfhe hadn't suggested getting something and I said, because I wasn't expecting to, I'd written it off in my mind, I haven't thought of what to cook and it's now 16:20 on a school night.
He thinks I'm just being argumentative and that I should just cook or we shpuld just tell the kids to just eat the damn chips.

Who's right?

I really am, but I know it’s my problem not OP’s. I am old. I have always viewed Sundays as special when you eat really good food. MY mum was a hardworking single parent and all my meals were cooked from scratch. Sundays were viewed as special where we would always have nice Sunday food. I still think this way. I am shocked to think people eat McD’s on a Sunday but as I said that’s me. I can see I have offended others.

As a 53 year old Brit, I have always despised the classic Sunday roast and will choose anything over that.
I only eat Christmas dinner because my elderly mum likes to make it for us and I will starve myself on the day so I am hungry enough to enjoy it.

I take it from that you live on lettuce leaves, chicken breast and boiled rice?

Because a roast dinner is not something you eat when having a day off from healthy eating! And I assumed it was a given that people would know that a roast dinner comes with vegetables (3 different colours for us this week)

In my opinion you sound like you are verging on disordered eating rather than just healthy. Withholding normal everyday home cooked food because it might have a red meat instead of white is not normal!

I bet all the people disagreeing with me are also the people who wonder why they're overweight because they 'eat healthy'

An average day of eating for me. Well today I had 2 slices of wholemeal toast, 2 poached eggs and some spinach on the side. For lunch I had a homemade 3 bean chilli and wholegrain rice and for dinner I had a garlic and herb chicken breast with some cheddar melted on top, a baked sweet potato. Always make sure I'm having some sort of bean/chickpea dish 4-5 meals a week, lean meat 3-4 times a week, a fair amount of eggs, dairy in moderation get 10 different vegetables a week and adequate protein and fibre. Maybe have bacon or red meat once or twice a week at most.

I love how getting adequate nutrition is an eating disorder according to some of you 🤣

I dont have kids but why is Sunday a school night?

You did go to school though, right? You remember that school happens on a Monday… so the Sunday night before is a school night.

This is the sort of question that would give an alien away…

Tsk tsk

TheSilentSister · 13/07/2025 20:15

I blame myself for my KFC loving DC. I used to mash up Sunday Roasts for him, chicken, potatoes, 3 vegs, gravy. I'd have a whole weeks worth of dinners for him. He never ate a jarred dinner in his life. Actually, I never purchased 'baby' food for him. Snacks were cheddar cheese, crackers, grapes, apple. He absolutely adores sea food, fish, prawns, mussels etc.
Yet we have a takeaway once a week and we are doooomed, dooomed, do you hear me?

I never said the katsu curry had red meat. I was referring to the pork belly and bacon alongside the roast which is often beef. There's just a distinct lack of vegetables and considering you were trying to mention how nutritious your child's diet is, I figured you would have mentioned if there were any healthy vegetables served with the roast to show this 'balance' that you talk about. Basically I eat healthily and all those meals sound like what I would eat if I was having a day off of healthy eating rather than a usual dinner I'd have. We're lacking so much education on what is healthy in this country though so I don't blame you.

I mean she mentioned sushi which always has venegetables, a roast which ways has vegetables, a katsu curry which is literally a sauce of blended up vegetables

I would also assume she didn't just serve a slab of pork belly with no side 🙄

She also didn’t list any veg with the meals, apart from spinach. Following her own logic, we must assume that she didn’t have any. 🤔

She mentions that she makes sure to eat a variety of veg so I assumed she served that with the meals mentioned.

There were plenty of fresh tomatoes in my chilli and they're a fruit, in case you weren't aware. Also I get more than enough vegetables so adequate fibre, vitamin and minerals that fruit isn't hugely essential.

Wow, someone who doesn't know a sweet potato is a vegetable or the ingredients of a homemade chilli. It had carrot, celery, onion, tomatoes. Perhaps if you cooked more you would know that.

I”m aware what a tomato is, honestly you’re not the font of all knowledge about food!

Says the person who didn’t know a roast included veggies, or what went into katsu curry sauce, you know like carrot, garlic, onion, etc!

I mean considering the average roast people eat in the UK is about 1000 calories its hardly a healthy meal. The likely lack of vegetables throughout the meals wasn't my only issue with it being classed as a healthy diet.

Oh dear, basic school boy error and now you outed yourself

Calories are not the measure of what makes a 'healthy' meal

And there is no such thing as a healthy meal, only a healthy diet overall.

I cook 99% of meals from scratch. Not only do I think it's the best way to be, but I really enjoy it. I also grow my many of my own vegetables on our allotment and we have 6 chickens we get our eggs from. I like good food and I like family meals but that looks very different for every family.
Sundays are special for us too. We do things as a family. Today we were down the beach from 10am until 2:30pm, having an amazing time together, we built sandcastles, we swam and paddleboarded it was a lovely, and a typical Summer Sunday for our family. We had a picnic full of fresh fruit, vegetables, salads, etc etc.
We got home tired, and hot, we had an hour until DH was going to take DS's friend home, he said he suggested an easy dinner and said he would pick it up while he was out. That sounded great to me, and I settled down while the kids played in the garden, happy that I could chill for a bit until bath/bed routine.
I do not see why any of this makes our Sundays less "special" than your Sundays as a child. I get you're maybe nostalgic for them but they really don't sound any better than mine.
For what it's worth, we do also eat roasts on a Sunday, but never in July. Roast season in this house is strictly October-Easter. We have beautiful roasts with fresh meat, home grown vegetables and apple pies made with our own grown apples.
Who wants a roast in Summer??! Summers are for BBQs, salads, picnics and simple tasty food. Not roast dinners noone wants for the sake of tradition (and I love tradition too!)
So don't feel too shocked, I assure you we are just fine and noone is missing out because we're not doing what a random mumsnetter's mother once did.
