Expensive items bought that disappointed/didn’t live up to the hype?

Mine is a cordless Dyson vacuum. Cost loads, has a poor battery, doesn’t pick up well, so overrated. Gets rave reviews - why?? My next one will be a Henry ;-) My other is overpriced, average pub/cafe grub when out as a family. Such a waste of time, money and effort. Sorry, I’m usually more upbeat…

velvetiser hot chocolate machine. I have given up and just shoved it in back of a cupboard

Mercedes sports car. Beautiful to look at and fun to drive but so many glitches with the software
and some of the functions.

Eating out - Most of the time i'm disappointed by the experience

Hair and Skin products - unless prescribed by a physician. Most of the over the counter stuff works more or less the same as cheaper brand products.

Shark Flexstyle. Thankfully, I didn't pay for it; it was (kindly) gifted to me from my MiL after she got herself a Dyson Airwrap.

Maybe, I'm just useless, but none of the attachments work on my hair. I have fine, very wavy hair, and so was hoping the diffuser attachment would be good for me (or the curling ones when going out). I can't work the curlers, and the diffuser makes my hair go limp. The straightening bit was good, but I have some excellent Babyliss straighteners for that ...

Pricey printer . I had such high hopes but now regularly want to throw it out the window ( or jump out myself ) it rarely works predictably and don’t mention the £456789 spent on ink cartridges….

My pans and pots set from Ourplace. Total waste of money and I feel stupid for buying into the hype

I disagree. I love mine, so lightweight after Le Creuset

Cel77 · 14/07/2025 21:55

A carpet spot cleaner from Bissell. It worked fine at first but I soon realised the product you've got to put inside is very costly and you need to buy it often.
Then it stopped working. Completely. I should have asked for my money back but got side tracked bride and now it's probably too late.

Dyson Airwrap. Sold it on ebay 2 months layer after 'Bonnie Langford' hair fails.
Dyson vacuum. Crap.
Get a grip James!

Elevenutionary · 14/07/2025 22:54

Dyson cordless vacuum. Rubbish. Battery died 1 day after the guarantee - I kid you not - 1 day! After a bit of a haggle tbf they did replace it. That died too. I also found the plastic bits very poor quality. They cracked and broke and you can’t really replace them.
I had the original funny shaped Dyson proper hoover too. A wedding present. I absolutely loathed it but the flipping thing wouldn’t die. Can’t remember how I got rid of it but I did.

Anyway, I wouldn’t buy another Dyson anything. As soon as there was a sniff of Brexit, he abandoned the UK.

A tempur mattress and pillows. Had it a few years and it's so uncomfortable! It sunk at the sides but only by 15mm and it has to sink by 20 for tempur to replace it. We'll need to replace it as soon as we're able. Never buying a super expensive mattress again!

Love my Tempur mattress and pillow! Sleep like a log.

Roomba!

Really! I have two and love them. They mop too. I get in with everything else while my to Roombas clean all the floors. 🙃

I bought a Eufy robot hoover and it worked well for about a year then started playing up. I spent a lot of money buying all the replacement bits for it and it was still crap. I gave up on it after it “hoovered” and looked worse after than before. Not worth it.

That always makes me think of the post where the dog crapped on the floor and the Eufy spread it all around the floor and downstairs 😀😀

sweetgingercat · 14/07/2025 23:33

A dupray neat steam cleaner. In no time at all the hose detached from the boiler. I sent it back and got another one and the same thing happened. I found it utterly useless. I have a karcher now and I love it.

alondonerabroad · 14/07/2025 23:35

A crimpit. I thought snack time was solved and we’d all be trying out multiple sandwich fillings. It was used once and now languishes in the drawer lamenting its own existence

Mine went to the local chazza

A tentbox. So much faffing about, hinges take ages to click in right. The cover for when it’s on the roof is a nightmare to zip up. Overall absolute nightmare!

Beemagirl · 15/07/2025 00:53

Anything Dyson. Airwrap - should be renamed Aircrap. Corded vacuums, bought 3 before I realised they never last - now on my second Shark but seriously thinking of getting a Henry as so many of you recommend. Dyson fan - the noisiest, dust magnet with an annoyingly bright light that illuminates your bedroom. Ditched and replaced with an Ingenix from Amazon - a quarter of the price and super quiet.

Ditto with the expensive face creams - now using either Aveeno or Neutrogena at a fraction of the cost.

And finally - Marine or Bovine collagen. It definitely does not work and I’m told never will if ingested. I won’t be getting it injected either though - I’m not that daft.

Mr Frosty

Looks so refreshing & delicious.

Reality is grinding away at too hard ice with the shit revolving lovechild of a pencil sharpener & a cheesegrater, not making a meaningful dent in the ice to produce any slushy, while it all just melts.

Every time i've bought a Which "Best Buy", I have been disappointed with it!

I’m sorry to hear that but admit it has made me feel slightly better 😀

Voxon · 15/07/2025 02:18

Monolo Blanik shoes. Probably not spelling that right but they were too painful to wear and flimsy. Gave them away!

Rhaenys · 15/07/2025 02:24

MacBook Pro. I loved it but it broke and was deemed not worth repairing by both the Apple Store and an independent company after less than 2 years. It was so expensive to have for such a short length of time!

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 15/07/2025 04:31

@Splcam
No diagram needed but you told the story so well that I could actually picture it all. Thank you. 😄👏

Whatinthedoopla · 15/07/2025 05:14

Eating in at a Pizza Hut. For a family of 4, we choose 2 adult deals, 1 child meal, and the baby eats their own food. This usually comes to around £70! Then we may end up with a dodgy stomach

elprup · 15/07/2025 05:24

I love my cordless Dyson. I vacuum a lot more because I don’t have to lug around a heavy vac, getting tangled in the wire etc. The cordless is so lightweight and easy to use.

hattie43 · 15/07/2025 05:49

I so agree with the Dyson hoover . I gave up and threw it out .
