Expensive items bought that disappointed/didn’t live up to the hype?

Mine is a cordless Dyson vacuum. Cost loads, has a poor battery, doesn’t pick up well, so overrated. Gets rave reviews - why?? My next one will be a Henry ;-) My other is overpriced, average pub/cafe grub when out as a family. Such a waste of time, money and effort. Sorry, I’m usually more upbeat…

also a Dyson, I sold it on 2nd hand and bought a shark. No regrets.
Designer handbags, i have a few from my pre kids days. While they do tend to last longer, I just don’t see why I needed to spend so much.
iPads, other than watching Netflix on a flight, it’s a total waste of time.

I agree with Tempur mattress, would also add Emma mattress, and expensive Italian sofa that only lasted 2 years whereas it’s IKEA replacement lasted over 10.

creme de la mer. Got it as a present. Killed my face with breakouts.
fell for the hype re Dyson cordless as well.

FrazzledHippy · 12/07/2025 23:05

Dubai Chocolate. After watching all the videos of it and listening to the rave reviews, me and DH caved in and got some. Whilst it was nice, it wasn't AMAZING and neither of us we're hugely impressed. DD was of the same opinion. Hugely disappointed

Thread face lift. I was puffy-faced for about 2 months, it looked ok for about 6 months after that, then all collapsed and back to square 1. Cost me £4K.

notnorman · 12/07/2025 23:07

Oh and smeg kettle- paint peeled off and it developed a leak within a few months

MeringueOutang · 12/07/2025 23:08

Irregular Choice shoes. I bought a gorgeous special edition pair for my wedding for quite a lot of money and I had to send them back because I couldn't walk in them, the heels were higher than the length from my heels to the balls of my feet and I couldn't put both parts of my feet on the floor at the same time. Now I do have long toes (shortening the part of my foot that had the issue) but still.

Venalopolos · 12/07/2025 23:10

Whaaaaat. I use mine most days. In fact, it’s probably the kitchen gadget I use the most (definitely more than the bread maker, stand mixer, air fryer or ninja smoothie maker!)

Not sure why that posted so many times… I don’t love it that much…

At home laser hair removal device. Incredibly expensive, ineffective and covered such a small area that I just got a Groupon and paid to get it done professionally. Ended up giving the one I had away after two uses in 5 years.

TheChosenTwo · 12/07/2025 23:18

Air fryer - technically dh wasted his money on if. Piece of crap, never understood why he bought it - he’s a fantastic cook and we are a family of 5 - despite buying a large one there was no way a dinner for all of us was being cooked in there without also using the oven. By the end of the day he’d asked around if anyone wanted it and it was gone by the end of the week. Piece of trash!

also a big fan of my Dyson cordless - did love the Henry but he’s a bugger for getting up and down the stairs and because we are on 3 floors I needed to unplug and re plug about 4 times. Too bulky and heavy for my liking.

Dyson airwrap for me though was a total waste of cash. Ended up giving in to my sister who also hates it 😂

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 12/07/2025 23:19

Ninja air fryer - this is probably on me though. I'm vegetarian and have no idea what to make in it.

Dualit toaster and kettle - the body of the kettle gets really hot and the toaster... well, toasts bread 🤷‍♀️

Dyson Corrale cordless straightners - they're heavy and awkward to use

I do like my Shark cordless hoover though. So easy without all that cable malarkey and picks up like a dream. I just need to remember to charge it.

Opposite time… ex insisted on buying a Dualit toaster after we had two cheaper makes in succession die the second they were out of guarantee… it is still in great nick and daily use 17 years later as is the matching kettle we bought, I think, 11 years ago … (marriage is history but that’s another story 😹)

Bloody hell, I'd be raging. Were you warned that could happen?

TwistedWonder · 12/07/2025 23:24

Dyson Airwrap - it’s just a glorified hairdryer/hotbrush

I had a couple of pairs and they’re the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. I ended up dancing barefoot one night I wore them to an event.

HGP · 12/07/2025 23:26

My SMEG range oven. It looks the part but my god it’s shocking!! It’s an absolute pain to clean, one of the ovens doesn’t work, the one that does bakes unevenly and the clock is broken. All £££ to replace. I wish I hadn’t bothered!

On the other side of the argument I have a Dualit kettle and that’s the best money I’ve ever spent.

I can’t comment on the ex 😜but I’ve had my Dualit toaster for over 30 years now and it’s still spot on. I suspect I will die before it does!

Hottchoc · 12/07/2025 23:27

Air Con unit. Made no difference at all so took it back a few days later.

MermaidMummy06 · 12/07/2025 23:28

Most restaurants and cafes. Food is not fresh. It's often bought in already prepped & just finished off & tastes like packaged food. At a cafe, had a cake slice that was served half frozen! Coffee often made by people with 5 minutes training.

Expensive shoes. Two pairs of high quality work shoes died recently, in less than 12 months. The sandals split in the sole on both shoes & low heeled shoes the sole collapsed. I'll go back to my cheap shoes that have lasted!

Most accommodation units at our beach tourist spots in summer (not UK). The cost is utterly ridiculous and I've no idea why anyone pays it. Even an old caravan park cabin is unaffordable. For comparison, we are taking our DC abroad, all costs, for two weeks next year, in school holidays, for not much more than the accommodation at the beach would be. I suppose people pay, so there's demand, but I don't understand why!
