Muslim women who dress modestly...

If you're at the beach and you want to paddle in the sea, are you able to roll up your trousers? Genuinely wondering as I saw a muslim family on the beach today having great fun. The kids were paddling in the sea. The women weren't but this question sprung in my head.

Personally I wouldn’t because I wouldn’t want to expose my legs. Or I’d just wade in and get my trousers/skirt wet.
when you say ‘able’ it feels like there isn’t a choice. For the vast majority of Muslim women, they CHOOSE to wear hijab/modest clothing so they are ‘able’ to pull things up and paddle but whether they would is a better question.

Sunshineandoranges · 12/07/2025 21:20

I would think that if it’s the woman’s choice fine, if not, not fine.

Yesterday I saw a young girl (primary school aged as I knew the uniform) heading off to school on a day that’s set to hit 30+ degrees (already at least 24 at the time k saw her) in a hijab, a thick cardigan over her uniform and woolly tights.

Damn right I’m going to judge the parents, the religion and the culture that thinks that’s a good way to dress on a boiling hot day. And no, that’s not covering up to protect you from the sun. That’s making a GIRL suffer in the heat for a stupid and backwards way of thinking, where you call it faith, culture, tradition or whatever.

Whereas this was my daughters muslim best friend....

Stop. Generalising.

It's hard to choose freedom when you then become ostracised by your family/community.

I totally agree with this comment - does the OP not have the freedom of speech to ask such a question? Why is she being insulting? Can one not be curious these days - on a forum designed to query such things? @Morgenrot25 you are clearly missing the point, are being patronising and curt in your manner and extremely antagonisitc. We don't need people like you here. Off you hop.

Oh, the irony. 🫣

This isn’t the questions i was expecting/. I was wanting to know how the Muslim modest ladies are keeping cool in this heat? I’ve been hiding indoors with a fan on all day

DD’s swim coach wears a burkini and a hijab. I do think though if you are used to wearing a hijab/niqb plus the abaya then you would probably feel very exposed in a burkini. I do think there will be women who would never swim in the sea even if they wished they could because of clothing.

However theres a fair few muslim women who go to the beach and pop a swimsuit on. My tunisian friend enjoys frying herself in a bikini, most of the non-hijabi muslim Lebanese women I know will happily wear a normal swimsuit on holiday.

Edited

I didn’t know what a burkini was, so I googled it once - there were a large number of beautiful women modeling them and it’s definitely something I’d choose - even though I’m not Muslim.
They’re modest suits - no more, no less.

TheHazelCritic · 12/07/2025 21:28

As usual so many women with no ties or experience of Islam and Muslim community jump in to judge.
Muslim countries are a mix of fully covered all the way to bikini wearing women.
Same for Muslim communities in the UK.
Many variations will be in the same family, I know so many where the mothers dress modestly but the daughters don't, again a range of no hijab but modest all the way to short dresses.
It is a choice.

Wide floaty clothes, bare asking underneath, keep the sun away from the skin and allow for airfow

For many of them it will be exactly the same as you're doing?

BemusedBaffledBewildered · 12/07/2025 21:16

You're projecting your own understanding of a situation on their emotional state. What makes you think they’re anxious? Maybe they just don’t want to? Maybe they would perceive it as immodest to pull up their abayas and paddle? What is it to you? So self-righteous.

I'm not projecting, I was married to one of those men years ago and I fully understand their feelings about how their wives dress on the beach. So no, not self-righteous.

MyUmberSeal · 12/07/2025 21:31

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 20:18

Eh?
It's really none of anyone else's business how or why another person swims/paddles or not. Muslims are individuals, just like non-muslims.
Minding your own business isn't remotely close to being a problem.

MN would literally be devoid of any interesting threads if everyone minded their own business.

Again, for those in the back, modesty isn't determined by clothing.
I expect the muslim/covered ladies keep cool by wearing lighter colours/lighter weight fabrics, staying in the shade, drinking cold drinks, having a fan, etc, you know, like any woman does. Many folk prefer longer skirts or blouses in lighter colours/fabrics when it's warm, everyone isn't in shorts and vests, and it's nothing to do with religion.

This actually made me smile - the thought of being so tempted by the sea that she was willing to suffer the discomfort of being in wet clothing afterwards.

I know her temptation to be in the sea. I've done it myself.

Young girls are not required to cover.
Much more likely they came from a place that is usually much hotter so 24 degrees isn't that high.
And that if it gets too hot the girl will simply remove her thights and cardigan?
Why jump straight in that it must be because of modesty, would you think the same if it was a blonde blue eyed child?
You know not all Muslim are brown.

At a resort, in lounger, completely covered in black, face covered.
The accompanying man, in a tiny gold Speedo. He was playing with the kids in the pool while she watched.
Did not see her approach pool.

I appreciated the gold Speedo, not sure I’d ever seen a gold one.

I mean, I don't dress like that, and my husband would never wear tiny Speedos. BUT I'd much rather lay on a lounger and leave him to play with our kids in the pool too.

Let's stop promoting the idea that clothing defines how modest someone is.
As it stands, there appears to be swimwear produced for muslim ladies, or indeed others who want to cover up, so it's kind of a non-issue.

What’s wrong with asking questions? Do you prefer people just stereotype or form incorrect conclusions instead of just speaking as adults?

Without sounding ignorant how is there such a variation in the way women dress when they are all Muslim? From an outsider perspective you would think if something is written in the Koran they would all follow it?

I promise I’m genuinely interested and not looking for an argument, I come in peace ✌🏼

This is quite an odd thing for you to be pondering tbh.

Arent you ever curious about anything?

I was thinking today that I wanted to start a thread about all my rather pointless questions that my OH wont know or understand and I bet someone somewhere has the answer to.

So why are girls in my son's year 3 class wearing hijabs? Fear of head lice?

Yes, and also could be the child leading the choice. I know someone who went through a period of wearing hijab for a while in primary school totally randomly initiated by themselves. If anything their parents discouraged them wearing it. They just decided to one day and then some months later stopped again. I also know someone (male, actually) who used to often insist on wearing a coat or jumper when it was really hot, and their parents would continually try to get them to take it off! Children don't always dress appropriately for the weather conditions.

They're suits with more coverage - which may appeal for different reasons - but they tell us nothing about a person's* *modesty.

You’d love my Google search history, full of the most random pondering 🤣. Stuff that crops up when I wake in the night and think to myself ‘oh I wonder…’
