Muslim women who dress modestly...

If you're at the beach and you want to paddle in the sea, are you able to roll up your trousers? Genuinely wondering as I saw a muslim family on the beach today having great fun. The kids were paddling in the sea. The women weren't but this question sprung in my head.

Can we stop calling clothing that doesn't expose as much skin as you would prefer us to see of you 'extreme religious clothing' as if those who prefer to cover themselves are somehow all religious fanatics?

Edited

Burkinis, hijabs, burkas etc are extreme religious clothing whether you like it or not.

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 18:52

Let's stop promoting the idea that clothing defines how modest someone is.
As it stands, there appears to be swimwear produced for muslim ladies, or indeed others who want to cover up, so it's kind of a non-issue.

So you think modest clothing doesn't exist? OP didn't mention anything about the modesty of the women, just the modesty of the clothes.

Morgenrot25 · 12/07/2025 20:57

TreatTreat · 12/07/2025 20:42

I couldn't think of another word.

People are tetchy on here tonight. Too much sun?

Modest clothing is a commonly used term to describe being covered up, however a lot of folk object to it - if a covered woman is modest then is someone in a standard Speedo cossie not modest? Of course not.

Why do you think they would frown upon it?

Edited

I don't know to be honest, only that if my husband is ever out the front the mum won't come out, or if she is out and he comes out she'll go in, same with any other make neighbours, she won't be in their company. And I just wondered what they might seem to be appropriate.

Policeofficerpanda · 12/07/2025 20:58

I’ll never forget being sent holiday pics by a Muslim friend. Him, his brother in law and dad in swimming trunks. His mother and sister covered up head to toe. Pathetic! Sadly it definitely wasn’t their choice as he told me it wasn’t himself but unfortunately it’s what a strict Muslim society dictates. It’s the double standards that gets to me. I also saw family pics from when his mother was in uni where she was dressed normally. Poor woman and her daughter now oppressed and covered up but no way to escape living in such a backward society.

TheHazelCritic · 12/07/2025 20:59

Dogaredabomb · 12/07/2025 20:34

A swimming pool near me has women only evenings when they cover up the windows, would a muslim woman wear less modest swimwear in those circumstances?

I would if the lifeguards are also female. Would wear something like shorts to the knees ( the area between waist and knees should be covered even when with other women) and a vest or smt.
Others had worn burkinis but without the head cover part, or those swimming rash tops and leggings.
It varies depending on personal preference, culture etc.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 12/07/2025 21:00

I dress "modestly" or whatever we're supposed to call it, and I'm not religious. I'm white British but I've always liked to cover up. As a kid I would wear a bikini but as an adult I choose not to. It's just a preference. If I went on a beach now I would wear trousers and tunic.
Some women cover up from choice. It's not always about religion or oppression or being told to be a certain way. It's about being comfortable.

It's a moronic description. Modest, immodest. Totally outdated and misogynist concepts. As if there were anything shameful or immodest about the sight of a woman's face, hair, ankles or general shape.

itbemay1 · 12/07/2025 21:00

Recent visit to the beach. Lady on lounger next to us, full niqab went into the sea with it on then laid in the sun after to let it dry. It wasn’t swimwear as she got on the same boat as us leaving and it was still dripping. Must have been an impromptu swim!

I think the term modest is an inappropriate name - clothing doesn't determine modesty.
I am aware that a variety of bathing/swimwear exists, and it's possible to show almost no skin, almost all skin, or something in between.

Which society? If a place is that strict men's clothing would be police as well

LibbyDo · 12/07/2025 21:02

Misogynistic clap trap-there’s no such thing as modest clothing. Show me a Muslim country where women are not oppressed.

Indeed.
Some of them really do present more of a safety issue when swimming too - swimwear should be streamlined and in a colour that shows easily in water.

My mother in law as well has pictures when she was dressed "normally" (define normal? For who's standars?)
The reason was colonialism... Wouldn't be seen uncovered outside now, and she is a widow so no husband to tell her.
Typical to assume someone doing things different must be forced to.

I agree with this, even though I hate to admit it as a liberal. Clothing is used to control women - god forbid you saw the knees of a woman!

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 12/07/2025 21:08

I've seen Muslim woman paddle bare foot exposing nothing but their feet..nothing is rolled up. They are happy to get in the car a bit soggy I presume. It's not for me but if i wasn't prepaired for paddling I wouldn't expose myself past my knees either really. Not one wants rouge wave and soggy pants.

Ddakji · 12/07/2025 21:09

Yesterday I saw a young girl (primary school aged as I knew the uniform) heading off to school on a day that’s set to hit 30+ degrees (already at least 24 at the time k saw her) in a hijab, a thick cardigan over her uniform and woolly tights.

Damn right I’m going to judge the parents, the religion and the culture that thinks that’s a good way to dress on a boiling hot day. And no, that’s not covering up to protect you from the sun. That’s making a GIRL suffer in the heat for a stupid and backwards way of thinking, where you call it faith, culture, tradition or whatever.

To all those giving the OP a hard time. YOU are the problem!
It is not a bad thing to want to find out more about other cultures and religions.
When you try and make asking questions a taboo you put up more barriers which create miss understands, miss conceptions and we all know where that ends up.

You all think you are being PC white knights, but you are just making problems worse.

This was exactly what I was thinking, you’ve wrote it better than I would have though. I don’t think there’s any problem with asking people about things related to their religion, I’ve asked my colleagues loads of questions about different events and beliefs related to their faiths and no offence has ever been taken and they’ve all explained things very enthusiastically and seem to enjoy educating people on their beliefs.

What about my long sleeved maxi dresses? They cover as much. How about when I wear something in the water that covers my body from the neck down - am I being a religious extremist, am I comfortable that way, am I covering Psoriasis, did I forget to shave, am I avoiding skin cancer or sunburn or is it fulfilling multiple purposes, none of which are up for your judgement? How about if I decide to cover my head with a scarf - is it due to a religion you don't like, am I trying to avoid heatstroke, is it because scalp sunblock feels horrible or stings on patches of Psoriasis or because my most recent medication made clumps of hair fall out and I feel shit about it compared to being happier to not have it visible?

You do not have a right to demand I expose any more of my body than I wish to do.

This actually made me smile - the thought of being so tempted by the sea that she was willing to suffer the discomfort of being in wet clothing afterwards.

I totally agree with this comment - does the OP not have the freedom of speech to ask such a question? Why is she being insulting? Can one not be curious these days - on a forum designed to query such things? @Morgenrot25 you are clearly missing the point, are being patronising and curt in your manner and extremely antagonisitc. We don't need people like you here. Off you hop.

I live in a hot country with a big Muslim population (Kurdish Syrians). The men dive into the sea with their children and have a great time, the wives stand on the beach covered from head to toe in black and look on anxiously.

You're projecting your own understanding of a situation on their emotional state. What makes you think they’re anxious? Maybe they just don’t want to? Maybe they would perceive it as immodest to pull up their abayas and paddle? What is it to you? So self-righteous.

This is so sad. I don't know any religion that is as misogynistic as Islam.

At a resort, in lounger, completely covered in black, face covered.
The accompanying man, in a tiny gold Speedo. He was playing with the kids in the pool while she watched.
Did not see her approach pool.

I appreciated the gold Speedo, not sure I’d ever seen a gold one.
