To be mildly embarrassed by my 10-year-old’s summer fashion choices?

My husband's son is 10 and flat out refuses to go barefoot which I can live with at home. The real issue is that he insists on wearing ankle socks with his sandals when we're out. He’s quite tall for his age, and honestly, it looks a bit silly!

Leave him alone. What he wears is nothing to do with you.

tardiz · 12/07/2025 14:26

Lots of boys (and girls) do this as fashion! I see so many socks/ sliders combos! If he is comfy does it matter?

Caramelty · 12/07/2025 14:27

😆 my six year old does this and yanks his socks up to his calves!

I share your slight embarrassment but it’s pretty cool that he’s got a strong enough character to dress the way he wants at age ten!

This will be the trait that saves him from following the pack in future years. Let him have his socks.

Flutterbylittlebutterfly · 12/07/2025 14:27

He's 10 and if he's comfortable, who cares.

meganorks · 12/07/2025 14:27

As much as I hate it as well, that does seem to be the fashion these days amongst younger people. So leave him be. I guess they are all laughing at our minging feet being out!

savagedaughter · 12/07/2025 14:28

Please do NOT speak to him about this. It's not your place to try to police his fashion choices, and he is harming nobody.

RachelsPeeves · 12/07/2025 14:28

White socks and sliders is pretty normal now with tweens and teens (and older) Nike being the preferred socks.

Sirzy · 12/07/2025 14:28

It’s comfy. It’s not dangerous. Don’t worry about it!

Welshwabbit · 12/07/2025 14:30

My 13 year old does this. It wouldn't occur to me to be embarrassed. Goodness knows, I looked pretty silly in my neon pink cycling shorts and batwing knitted jumper at a similar age.

Octavia64 · 12/07/2025 14:30

All the teens do this.

Bythewayimgoingouttonight · 12/07/2025 14:31

Leave him alone. You will really knock his confidence if you express your distaste towards his appearance. He may also not like the feel of the shoes against his bare skin. Get over yourself please 🙏🏼

Darragon · 12/07/2025 14:32

Presumably this generation will have the last laugh when they don't get skin cancer between their toes. 🤷‍♀️

anytipswelcome · 12/07/2025 14:32

It’s in fashion now, no need to be embarrassed for him!

MintTwirl · 12/07/2025 14:32

This is what all the tweens and teens are wearing, usually nike socks and sliders. I have two that wear them and it wouldn’t occur to me to care!

Newname25 · 12/07/2025 14:33

The sliders/crocs and socks is a fashion trend now. As is the modern mullet which my DS is currently styling his hair. Leave the child alone!

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/07/2025 14:33

Oh leave him alone!

WhatTheHelll · 12/07/2025 14:34

I had white trainer socks and Barbie pink Crocs on in the shops yesterday. I noticed a lot of adults do the same.

The horror.

cherrycherrypickin · 12/07/2025 14:34

Is it your DC? Your title says it is but the post says it's your husbands child. If it's your child, leave him alone to his fashion choices, if he's your step child, definitely leave him alone.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 12/07/2025 14:35

It's the current fashion - why are you embarrassed? Confused

Hankunamatata · 12/07/2025 14:36

Mine are all in crocs with socks

Waitingfordoggo · 12/07/2025 14:38

As others have said, this is the fashion. But even if it wasn’t, I think it’s best not to comment negatively on kids’ and teens’ fashion choices (unless they’re wearing something outright offensive).

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 12/07/2025 14:39

If youre worried people might laugh at him, dont be.
Most people aren't dicks and those that would laugh at a child aren't worth anything so who cares what they think

Coffeeishot · 12/07/2025 14:41

Poor kid leave him alone, imagine getting embarrassed as an adult at what a young lad wears have a word with yourself! And most young people are wearing socks with sandals these days. I saw some teenage girls wearing socks with crocs recently.

Glitchymn1 · 12/07/2025 14:41

It does look daft but it’s fashion. You are the one who looks odd 😆 lol

fount · 12/07/2025 14:42

It's socks. Get over it. I mean, sorry to be blunt, but that is a ridiculous thing to be embarrassed over. Not as though he's wearing something filthy or full of holes. Everything's clean and covering any private areas. It's fine.
