To be mildly embarrassed by my 10-year-old’s summer fashion choices?

My husband's son is 10 and flat out refuses to go barefoot which I can live with at home. The real issue is that he insists on wearing ankle socks with his sandals when we're out. He’s quite tall for his age, and honestly, it looks a bit silly!

This is the fashion for younger people....

Migrainesandme · 12/07/2025 16:39

I live in flip flops all year round.
I get plain ones and stick gems on them or press pins around the sides.

Maraa · 12/07/2025 16:45

Only thing I find weird is an adult judging a CHILDS clothing choices. Let the kid wear what he likes

Let him be! My 16 year old daughter has a unique style, basically if she likes it anything goes, she's not a fan of skimpy clothes, she had a great sense of self and is very secure, if you don't like it that is a you problem, not a her problem. If you didn't like what she was wearing she wouldn't bother binning you off because again, it's a you problem, you don't like it off you jog (if you want 😁).
Yesterday she was walking down a travelator in an airport next to her sister (who wasn't on the travelator), making eye contact with her while playing ghostbusters on a bloody kazoo (very quietly and only briefly so she didn't annoy the people around her), she is her own person!

I was always the same haha, since being 12 or 13 I've never followed trends with fashion or anything really. It's the best way to be!

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 12/07/2025 16:46

Well he’s in fashion and the socks and sandals is a thing. My teens live in crocs and sliders but would never go out without socks. This is one of those times and there will be many more where you have to accept that you are out of touch.

HunnyPot · 12/07/2025 16:46

You’ve just been schooled in current fashions by a 10 year old 😂

DuskyPink1984 · 12/07/2025 16:47

I have teenagers and at my place of work we see mainly teenagers and they’re all wearing this. The only thing to be embarrassed about is that you hadn’t noticed this.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 12/07/2025 16:48

My DS does this with odd socks!

TheGentleButFirmMadonna · 12/07/2025 16:49

I was 28 and still did not know the rule that you cannot wear even transparent women's sock in sandals and went to an international business meeting. I survived it

DiscoBob · 12/07/2025 16:50

I think it's a bit of a trend right now, statement socks, pulled up high. Even with slides and sandals.
I've seen it on all ages.

I personally think going barefoot is unwise unless you're literally going swimming. I've had glass stuck in my feet so many times as a kid, dog poop on my feet etc.

So I honestly wouldn't worry. He's less likely to injure his feet or get them filthy and he feels comfortable wearing what he does.

Feet are quite individual things. Some hate shoes, socks. Some hate sandals, some can only wear a certain type shoe.

tooloololoo · 12/07/2025 16:50

That’s normal
he is a child
leave him alone

Downplayit · 12/07/2025 16:50

I think men need to be quite stylish generally to carry off summer clothing. My husband polishes up fairly well except in the summer when mid shin shorts and teenager type t-shirts come out. It looks dreadful and he's offended if I say anything. I've learnt just to ignore his summer fashion choices.

Cucy · 12/07/2025 16:52

Omg where have you been!

This is the fashion whether we like it or not.

I don’t think I ever cared what my 10yo wore as long as she was happy and comfy.

It's the fashion. Didn't you ever wear outfits which would make you wince now? As far as he and his contemporaries are concerned he's bang on trend.

Why on earth do you find it embarrassing? That's ridiculous. I always wear socks with sandals because otherwise I get blisters. He may be the same. But whatever his reasons, it's none of your business, purely a question of personal preference, and it's silly to be bothered by it.

Edenmum2 · 12/07/2025 17:15

jeez

Seagull5 · 12/07/2025 17:17

That's in
I'd do that too if I had sandals

Didn’t mean to sound so serious! Just having a laugh about the socks-with-sandals look 😄 He’s a happy and healthy child, so all good.I was just curious what other kids wear!

So take a look around. You’ll find that they are wearing… socks and sliders

henlake7 · 12/07/2025 17:42

Wouldnt matter if nobody was wearing socks and sliders, who cares?
He isnt huffing glue or stabbing old ladies! Let him wear what he wants.

Sounds sensible to me. Ive been out in sockless sandals once this year and had to keep stopping every couple of feet to shake the grit out of my shoes.
How are people comfortably wearing them without socks!?

Wow, what a nasty person to start a thread about this

Galatine · 12/07/2025 17:49

If that’s your worst problem in life I envy you.

ElleintheWoods · 12/07/2025 18:13

Going barefoot is not very nice though unless you're on a beach/ by the pool?

I definitely wouldn't go barefoot inside a house, was raised to always change into indoor shoes in the hallway since a young age, or socks at bare minimum. I'm not sure what face I'd make with someone on my floor/ carpet with no socks on, but it wouldn't be a pretty one, thankfully it's never happened!

Only scenario I'd go barefoot wearing a shoe is flopflops by the pool/ in a spa etc.

Appreciate not wearing tights/ stockings seem to have always been very widespread in the UK in the summer but what about blisters? Chafing? Shoes getting smelly or feet dusty? I'm actually curious how people get around these comfort factors.

I've tried a few times and all I can say is never again 😂Don't have that kind of plaster budget!

So all the way team kid, all about being comfortable 😇

Yeoldlondoncheese · 12/07/2025 18:21

Your 10 year old is on trend. This is what the 25+ are wearing. My office is full of people in Birkenstock Boston and arizonas with ankle and crew socks. In the tube yesterday after work I was admiring a woman’s beautiful floaty max dress - she was wearing black Bostons with black nike sports socks 😂I personally didn’t like the combo but each to their own.

mathanxiety · 12/07/2025 18:38

He's very fashionable.

Only little kids go sockless around here.

Agree.

You 'need to get out more', OP.
