To be mildly embarrassed by my 10-year-old’s summer fashion choices?

My husband's son is 10 and flat out refuses to go barefoot which I can live with at home. The real issue is that he insists on wearing ankle socks with his sandals when we're out. He’s quite tall for his age, and honestly, it looks a bit silly!

That is the fashion.

Doggymummar · 12/07/2025 15:01

I ware socks and sliders. It looks fab

MyDeftDuck · 12/07/2025 15:02

Leave the child alone……only enough to make his own fashion choice decisions. Just because you think he looks silly doesn’t mean he actually does.

Tiswa · 12/07/2025 15:02

I think this ages you and means you are up to date with fashion because socks are in!

TaborlinTheGreat · 12/07/2025 15:04

Even if it weren't the fashion, what a ridiculous thing to be embarrassed by. Insecure teenagers get to be embarrassed by stupid stuff. Adults should be mature enough not to be.

AnonSugar · 12/07/2025 15:05

You’re in the wrong generation. I’m a millennial and would never dream of socks with sandals!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/07/2025 15:05

You're showing your age OP, it's the fashion now. White socks and sliders!

HerdMentality · 12/07/2025 15:07

Apart from the fact he’s 10 and everyone makes strange choices with their clothes at that age and it’s charming, high socks with crocs, Birkenstocks etc is a thing. It’s only us old folk that like to get their ankles out according to my grown up kids.

Well I’m sure he thinks you look silly and are also incredible embarassing to him so 🤷‍♀️

lazyarse123 · 12/07/2025 15:10

If we're not supposed to judge women on what they wear probably best not to judge kids.

RunningBlueFox · 12/07/2025 15:11

What's embarrassing here is you not knowing what is fashionable for kids and feeling like this about a 10 year old. He's a child FFS

outerspacepotato · 12/07/2025 15:11

Are you kidding me?

You must be a real treat of a stepmom if you get embarrassed over what your husband's son chooses to wear.

🙄

dontcomeatme · 12/07/2025 15:11

My nieces are 7YO twins and one of them has an awesome fashion sense, colour coordinated, weather appropriate, cool and chic. The other wears red leggings, with a blue tutu, a gabby dollhouse tshirt with a neon yellow jacket 😅 she just rocks her own style, much to her mother's embarrassment haha

OurStepsWillAlwaysRhyme · 12/07/2025 15:12

Socks are probably more comfortable for him! Sandals with bare feet can rub and leave blisters, so he's not really being unreasonable here.

Tisfortired · 12/07/2025 15:13

Mines 11 and does this too, I think it’s a sensory thing for him really but I just leave him to it.

LlynTegid · 12/07/2025 15:16

I share your concern. A fashion embraced by Rishi Sunak.

It used to be about as socially acceptable as the 1970s Skodas were, how times have changed.

BunnyLake · 12/07/2025 15:18

Mind you’re own business. You sound unpleasant.

YourRubyUser · 12/07/2025 15:21

Didn’t mean to sound so serious! Just having a laugh about the socks-with-sandals look 😄 He’s a happy and healthy child, so all good.I was just curious what other kids wear!

Post a photo of yourself.Let's see how fashion conscious you are?

therewasafishinthepercolator · 12/07/2025 15:22

Ah, you're showing that you're out of touch like I did. Long socks is a look. I'm old fashioned in my trainer socks and I was laughed at when I offered to buy DS Nike trainer socks for going to Spain. Nope. Long socks all the way. Let him be.

StinkerTroll · 12/07/2025 15:23

Let him be! My 16 year old daughter has a unique style, basically if she likes it anything goes, she's not a fan of skimpy clothes, she had a great sense of self and is very secure, if you don't like it that is a you problem, not a her problem. If you didn't like what she was wearing she wouldn't bother binning you off because again, it's a you problem, you don't like it off you jog (if you want 😁).
Yesterday she was walking down a travelator in an airport next to her sister (who wasn't on the travelator), making eye contact with her while playing ghostbusters on a bloody kazoo (very quietly and only briefly so she didn't annoy the people around her), she is her own person!

therewasafishinthepercolator · 12/07/2025 15:24

Unfortunately DH uses DS's long sock / slider look to justify his long sock / slipper summer mode. It could be worse. Much much worse...😀

TheBuffetInspector · 12/07/2025 15:26

Regardless of YOUR fashion choices... Socks and sandals has been trendy for some time now.
Knee high socks and sandals currently - AFAIK.

Stop judging the poor kid because you're not down with the kids.
