To be mildly embarrassed by my 10-year-old’s summer fashion choices?

My husband's son is 10 and flat out refuses to go barefoot which I can live with at home. The real issue is that he insists on wearing ankle socks with his sandals when we're out. He’s quite tall for his age, and honestly, it looks a bit silly!

It’s the fashion 🤷🏼‍♀️ my 10 year old is the same.

LowDownBoyStandUpGuy · 12/07/2025 15:31

My 12 year old DS would never dream of wearing sandals without socks, it’s very much the style just now. My DH is like you OP and finds it very embarrassing, I think it’s quite a good look.

Didn’t mean to sound so serious! Just having a laugh about the socks-with-sandals look 😄 He’s a happy and healthy child, so all good.I was just curious what other kids wear!

Whats him being happy and healthy got to do with what you wrote? You're the one on here making fun of your step son, no one here judged him as not being happy or healthy.

Every other kid wears exactly what your DSS is wearing. Because it's in fashion right now.

Beachtastic · 12/07/2025 15:35

I might start doing the same. When I wear sandals, my feet rapidly turn into calloused hooves 😝

AlphabetBird · 12/07/2025 15:36

You’re in the wrong here twice - socks and slider/sandals are more fashionable than not, and it’s none of your business.

user4287964265 · 12/07/2025 15:37

Socks and sliders are a thing, ridiculous as it sounds.
At least the trend of older teens wearing their jeans mid thigh with boxers on display seems to have abated in the youth round here at least!

IVbumble · 12/07/2025 15:38

I once had to walk round a zoo in August with my DSS wearing a Santa hat.

Socks seem more simple to me.

IwasDueANameChange · 12/07/2025 15:41

Gosh this would be the last thing that bothered me.i was expecting this to be a thread about a fat girl insisting on parading round in too tight tiny nike shorts with her stomach and bum overflowing cos ive seen about 10 of those today.

anotherwordforit · 12/07/2025 15:44

Socks have been worn with sliders/crocs for a few years now as a ‘trend’ so there will be plenty of others

It’s the fashion! Footballers made it cool or something. 🤣 Anyway, I bet you rocked a few shockers in your time. I was a 90s teen and did the double denim, over the knee socks, platforms, bucket hat etc. When I was a kid in the 80s I did the neon cycling shorts, shell suits, puff ball skirts. Some of them have come back around. Come on now, admit to your fashion crimes…

Let him be! My 16 year old daughter has a unique style, basically if she likes it anything goes, she's not a fan of skimpy clothes, she had a great sense of self and is very secure, if you don't like it that is a you problem, not a her problem. If you didn't like what she was wearing she wouldn't bother binning you off because again, it's a you problem, you don't like it off you jog (if you want 😁).
Yesterday she was walking down a travelator in an airport next to her sister (who wasn't on the travelator), making eye contact with her while playing ghostbusters on a bloody kazoo (very quietly and only briefly so she didn't annoy the people around her), she is her own person!

On google it seems its very much on trend. You dd sounds great 😁

Tryonemoretime · 12/07/2025 15:49

There a hills to die on and ant hills to ignore. This is an ant hill 😅🤣😂

That reminds me of when I took my kids to the skate park and asked what they wanted to take. Oldest was like I can’t decide between my rollerblades, BMX or scooter. He took his bike. My youngest said he wanted to take his mini suitcase on wheels. Took them to the skate park and watched my youngest run up and down the ramps with his suitcase 🤣

SharpMintUser · 12/07/2025 15:55

I’d be absolutely furious if I was this child’s mother and I found out you were making “lighthearted” threads on mumsnet to poke fun at them !

Shantayyoustaysashayaway · 12/07/2025 15:55

Personally I hate the calf length white socks & sliders look (my daughter wears socks with her sliders) but I don't like white socks at all. Also hate socks with those fkn awful Croc shoes everyone wears. Hated the arse hanging out of trousers showing your undies look as well, always wanted to go up behind & yank them up but each to their own.
I was an 80s child who was mad about Boy George, loved big hair with a ton of hairspray or permed hair, really wacky earrings (toilets, ping pong bar & balls, frying pan with fried egg in them) patterned tights, huge bows á la Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) & recently found a photo of me from the early 00s with the thinnest eyebrows possible 😱 I was horrified when I saw them! 😂

Flamingoknees · 12/07/2025 15:55

"Get with it" OP.

It's the job of teens and now pre-teens to embarrass their parents and/or grandparents! I recall going into HMV just before Christmas in the early '90s and asking if my 15 year old daughter was taking the p when she said she wanted Abba's greatest hits for Christmas and her daughter wanted white Crocs a couple of Christmases ago!

WavyRavey · 12/07/2025 16:23

Socks and sandals is the fashion now so its actually you that's out of touch

CountrySpot · 12/07/2025 16:27

Whether it is in fashion or not does it matter if he is comfy?

TaffetaPhrases · 12/07/2025 16:29

its….current….. fashion

AutumnFog · 12/07/2025 16:31

My 13 year old DD does this, as do her friends. You're at an age where what you think is fashionable is likely the opposite!
Leave him to it and wear what you like yourself.

Yesterdaytodaytomorrowagain · 12/07/2025 16:32

Have you considered that he might be embarrassed by things you wear??

Confabulations · 12/07/2025 16:34

I am 53 and rock this looks to wind my teens, who are also rocking it, up. Mostly mine are with running kit before/after a run. It is comfy. Not going to stop!

converseandjeans · 12/07/2025 16:36

He is on trend - they are all wearing socks with sliders/crocs/birkenstocks. Never thought I would see it but there you go.
