To ask what you think about Starmer’s plan to stop the boats?

1000 replies

WhereIsMyJumper · 10/07/2025 22:30

I cannot see how his ‘one in one out’ plan is going to help. I also can’t understand why France is cooperating with us. What’s the incentive?

If you don’t agree with this plan, what would your answer be?

Starmer says 'one in, one out' migrant deal with France to begin within weeks

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.

I don’t care about the boats, this country has far more important problems to sort out.

No it's utterly ridiculous to blame Brexit.
Inside the EU we had millions coming over undocumented from everywhere esp the first waves from Eastern Europe.
That sowed the seeds of Brexit.

TopPocketFind · 12/07/2025 12:58

All countries in the EU have issues with asylum seekers, the UK's issues have been made bigger thanks to Brexit.

Small boat crossings started after Brexit.

Ignoring Brexit as a factor is naive but it benefits Farage and co to do so.

Brexit also slashed our influence within the EU, set back talks by years, took us out of EU criminal databases and schemes.

One thing we could have done within the EU is to withhold budget payments, that would have concentrated minds..... i believe a previous Tory PM threatened this with some success.....

EasternStandard · 12/07/2025 13:04

All EU countries are struggling with this. They say no to each other over taking migrants.

They have electorates who want their politicians to deal with what they’re facing.

99% then worked, paid taxes, cared for our elderly, worked in our factories ettc etc
Boosted growth... mostly young, didn't bring dependents... went home after a few years, huge churn of workers.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 12/07/2025 13:05

Omg by the time anything was set up thousand of criminals came here and set up !!

Slavery ,sex trafficking drug barons.

Peak asylum was 2002 pre Brexit. Just via lorries, until people died and there was outcry.

2024 was higher than 2002

Boat crossing data only started after Brexit

And ofcourse there was outcry, nobody likes to see people die trying to get to the UK (well I would hope so, not sure after reading this thread)

Thats down to our lack of using Europol databases at Passport control... we failed to integrate into this system at the time.

WhereIsMyJumper · 12/07/2025 12:36

This is actually a good question.

I’ve only just been thinking about it so not entirely sure how it would be policed. If there was a fair way we could only allow the boats to bring in women and children, and not causing harm or loss of life in the process, would you be in favour of it? As a short term solution?

It wouldn't work under international law. You can't discriminate. Secondly what happens to the men? They need to be processed as you need to know where they're from and you can't send people back to a country where they could be in danger. Once people are in our water, we have an obligation to them.

It would still cost money to process them.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 12/07/2025 13:08

I'm sorry Alexandra that is absolute nonsense , we had no idea who came over it was only when schools reported bulges , non English speaking children ,hospitals needing urgent interpertors ,a and e bursting, meals on wheels pulled from elderly people that the true enormity of what happened hit us.

Cash in hand jobs living in a shoe string sending money home

Lorry crossing reduced because the UK and the EU struck a deal.

Brexit cost is that influence to do similar now.

Only just both at around 84,000 excluding dependants

  • Peak Year:
  • 2002 marked a high point for asylum claims in the UK.
  • Number of Claims:
  • Specifically, there were 84,130 applications, excluding those from dependants.

If you say Brexit is a major factor why could it be so high in 2002?

Lovesstaggbeetle · 12/07/2025 13:09

@MiloMinderbinder925

You agree with that obligation don't you. You want us to be obligated to thousands of undocumented young men .

Lovesstaggbeetle · 12/07/2025 13:10
  • these are asylum claims we are not accounting here for those who run off into the black market

Nope, you re just spouting Reform/Ukip propaganda.

We had financial help for areas hit by excessive migration, such as Lincolnshire, Cameron stopped that.

The arguments on these threads are madness at times. No one in Aus will ever vote out border security yet every thread the same opposition to a system that works.

It seems some want the system we have, messy, insecure and dangerous.
