to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

But - as you'd know if you'd RTFT - many people don't send their kids to private school for academic reasons. Also, I don't really get what you're saying. It sounds like you're saying that a child has to be naturally clever to achieve anything over a grade 4 at GCSE.

In real life, I know many people who send their children to private school and every single one does so because they think it will mean their children do better academically. They might phrase it more euphemistically and say "better learning environment" or "fewer distractions in class" but it amounts to the same thing - that they think their children will do better than they would in state. Not that they will necessarily get top grades, but better than they would have done.

The Mumsnet thing of doing it "for the extracurriculars" is not something I have ever heard anyone IRL say...

Yes, owning a boat = pouring money into the sea, though it does look fun and I would like to have one. Also see: owning horses.

Yes, someone once said if you are thinking about buying a boat, stand under a cold shower and rip up £50 notes, and if you enjoy that, get a boat 😂

All that tells me is that I don’t know you in real life.

New cars when there’s nothing wrong with the old one.

Gambling, it’s an obscene waste.

Designer clothes/bags when purchased simply because they’re designer and not because you especially love the item.

Carvery dinners.

Massive fuck-off TVs.

Lottery tickets if bought in excessive quantities.

Trips to Disneyworld/theme parks generally.

Fancy trainers unless needed for a sporting activity.

Oh, and bloody coffee.

I hate personalised number plates. I think it's such an unnecessary display of wealth. What's the point?
Plastic surgery. I understand why people want to look better, but there is a risk that they might look worse and all that money and pain. Looks soooo painful.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 07/07/2025 17:34

haha this is hilarious.

I have and do loads of the things pps have said they don't understand spending money on. The boat thing made me laugh as we have a boat and we absolutely love it and holidays - I can never have enough!

The only things I don't understand people spending money on are illegal drugs and those twiddly metallic things that you stick in your garden, usually with butterflies or robins on them. And gnomes? Don't get them at all.

Katemax82 · 07/07/2025 17:35

Expensive basics like branded peas etc. My husband always insists on birds eye peas, I always get basics and he says "those peas were nice" when I cook said basics peas

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 07/07/2025 17:35

I can’t get worked up about what other people spend their money on.
but I do despise people calling things they don’t personally like as tacky or cringe. Or referring to people as imbeciles for buying something you’ve no interest in.

LemondrizzleShark · 07/07/2025 16:20

Cars in general! I obviously get why people have cars, but not why they spend £60k on a fairly average one just because it’s brand new and an Audi/BMW etc, when you can get an identical two year old one for half the price, and a cheaper marque for a quarter of that.

Doesn’t bother me that people do, I just wouldn’t myself. I also really really don’t understand anyone whose self-image is tied up in being a Mercedes driver not a Hyundai driver.

I have a neighbour whose self esteem is entirely dependent on having a flash Mercedes on the drive. And she thinks people are ‘pieces of shit’ if they drive an ordinary car. So her poor indoctrinated dd is unable to date any man, however nice, unless he has a flash car.
The mother is TBH pure poison.

Fireworks
Burning money for childish need for lights and bangs.

IAmNotASheep · 07/07/2025 17:37

Fake tan, nails, bottox or anything that artificially attempts to make you look younger including hair dye. Number plates and sex workers I’m going to hav to mention that or @EthicsOnThePrecipice might think I’m into prostitutes🤣🤣. Tat. All those b&M type ‘ornaments’ and anything that’s been faked and aged with the words Retro or Vintage to describe them. 🤮. Pure bred Animals from breeders. New cars on finance. Holidays just so u can lie on a beach. Bikinis that don’t cover your bum that’s a lot of money for not a great deal of fabric 🤣🤣White leather sofas. Bling both for personal wear and homes. New builds, the ones made predominantly of plastic cladding and fascia’s. Plastic grass, plants etc. Big weddings. Takeaways, deliveries etc. Big TVs I just hate them especially in rooms too small to accommodate them. Cinema rooms. Anyone who spends money removing mature trees and shrubs really disgust me.

BuildbyNumbere · 07/07/2025 17:37

But it’s not for you or anyone else to “get” … maybe people won’t get some of the things you spend you money on???
Why do people have to poke their nose in to what others want to spend their money on or how they live their lives?? That’s what I don’t “get”.

meisafairy · 07/07/2025 17:37

The latest plate cars, I really don’t get the fuss I live on an estate and see people with cars worth £50k+ yet living in a house worth. £120/150k, it just seems bizarre to me. But each to their own, we all have different priorities.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 07/07/2025 17:38

Jewellery - so many better things to spend that amount of money on.

You don't get why someone goes to the hairdresser? 😳

I havent been to a hairdresser dresser for 3 years, before that it was 9 years.

I am shocked when people tell me how much they spend at a hair dresser!!!

dayatthepark · 07/07/2025 17:38

Primary school aged children with full manicured nails. They can't hold a pencil ffs.

cramptramp · 07/07/2025 17:39

Pedigree dogs.

minnienono · 07/07/2025 17:39

Botox, fillers, cosmetic surgery, yes to personalised numberplates, takeaways, taxis when there’s a bus/coach, tons of new clothes

I haven’t read every single comment on the thread but I stand by what I said. Naturally clever children will be achieving grade 9 regardless if they go to private or state school. However, I think it’s a waste of money if your child is average, all that money to achieve grade 4, pointless. For those sending their kids due to non academic reasons, they will still be in the same postion qualification wise if they had sent them to a state school.

Ugly, nasty bully-type dogs. Why? There are so many nicer dogs to have x

Because everyone has different taste!! People may think the same about your partner 🤷🏻‍♀️

Each to their own, but what sort of hairstyle do you have that can look good without a cut? I’ve got images of cousin It.

Jane958 · 07/07/2025 17:41

Just thought of a couple more:
Over-reliance on "convenience"
Beige and junk food - there cannot be much goodness/wholesomeness on anything that comes sealed in a plastic package
Not using local markets, butchers, green-grocers, fishmongers or bakers
Not being able to cook
Having massive open-plan kitchen/diner/family rooms that are never used to cook/eat in
Deep cleaning
Scented anything - candles, diffusers, chasing boosters, just why?
Family days out at "attractions" - you are being ripped off right, left and centre
Drinking anything like cola or anything "low sugar"

Long. Straight and rarely sees any heat.

I had 2 compliments today on my hair so I must be doing something right.

bellocchild · 07/07/2025 17:41

I really don't like the appearance of tattoos, but I accept that everyone has the right to get them done.

upandleftthenright · 07/07/2025 17:42

Cocktails. Just seem very expensive for very little
