to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

I'm a tap water drinker but last time I tried to fill a water bottle at Bristol airport it was lukewarm and disgusting. I ended up buying a bottle of water.

Exactly, in some parts of the country (mine included) tap water tastes rank. And also, with all the publicity there's been lately about sewage infiltrations... 🤷‍♀️

TV subscriptions if you already have a TV licence. There's far too much to watch already - who needs more? (Although I know you need to subscribe for some sports coverage.)

Being that 99% of the freeview channels show absolute drivel is why I pay for subscriptions.

The same could be said for subscription channels!

True! But only if you subscribe to shit ones!

What's on offer on Freeview is many and varied so comparing it to tap water just doesn't work.

Yeah, if you love old episodes of Come Dine With Me and The Chase, it's the place to go

Plenty of films, documentaries, series, comedy etc etc. No need to watch CDWM or The Chase unless you want to. Mind you, I only watch a couple of programmes a day so I don't need an endless supply.

When people buy their son a motorbike to ride on underage and illegally. There are a lot !

And you're obviously not very choosy about what you watch. There are lots of good things on free to air, but some of the best television of this century is only available on the streamers.

I am extremely choosy! I did try Netflix for a while but couldn't find much worth watching. Maybe I'm missing out on some wonderful stuff but I have plenty of other things to do and don't want to get sucked into watching hours of drama etc. I never binge watch anything because I don't like spending hours on the sofa. So for me, there's plenty of excellent viewing on free TV. I'd rather spend my spare money on other things.

I get stopping for a coffee if you are out for the day but the daily buying of cheap burnt tasting muck that people buy several times per day at work or on the way rather than make your own I do not understand .
Also the amount of cups/ lids etc heading for landfill

If people are buying it several times a day at work I can only imagine it's because their work doesn't provide coffee or a machine/kettle to do your own. Most office workers use the work kitchen, but maybe in some jobs they don't have that.

As for the waste, that's down to the law really. Half the time I go to Starbucks, I sit in, but there's no option for re-usable cups and I won't carry my own because I have to keep the things I carry around with me to a minimum. They could make it the law to not give takeaway cups to people who are not taking away. I think also they banned people bringing their own cups during Covid...

You are also relying on someone managing the hygiene of these systems. There’s one at the end of a very long building at bham airport - glass either side so very hot. The water pipe is therefore very long. If no one uses this regularly, and no one flushes it regularly, there’s going to be a lot of biofilm and bacteria build up going on.

What's Labubus?

A brand of posh collectable toy elves which are cute and ugly. They are sold in blind boxes apparently, celebrity endorsed and have limited availability

If I have a tea in Costa, I always have it in the largest take away cup. You get about twice the amount of tea for the same price as one in not in one. They also have recycling facilities in store for the cups and lids.

Labubus

My eldest dgd (17) came over last week & was ranting about them as apparently her younger sister & younger cousin have them & she was saying so horrible they are (she had to show me a pic as I didn't have a clue what she was on about) I found a brown keyring I've got for her for xmas! 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 07/07/2025 16:13

What do you regard as expensive?

I paid £50 for a leather handbag which I thought was reasonable but my sister was horrified. She just kept saying "you paid & 50 for that?" 😂

Those are all fair points and I don’t buy bottled water often as I’m conscious of these things, but I did feel the point needed making that it’s harder to keep hydrated healthily if what’s coming out of the tap tastes disgusting, especially for those of us who don’t drink tea or coffee.

We used to have a cleaner as we hated cleaning and would far rather have spent our time and energy on doing other things.

Have a halo. 🙄

Not all of us with limited spare time are interested in spending it being domestic martyrs if we don’t have to.

so…?? I would rather get a cleaner so I can go get my nails done. Not every woman wants to be a Martyr

Oddly enough, one of the things people spend money on that I just don't understand is getting their nails done. But I can see that lots of women do, so I think it's probably me who's a bit odd!
