to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Pedigree dogs / cats from breeders

JudgeBread · 07/07/2025 16:07

Anything they can't actually afford! If klarna is involved just live without it.

SusanChurchouse · 07/07/2025 16:07

Depends what you mean by understand. I can’t comprehend having the spare money to be comfortable spending say 100k on a piece of jewellery or 5k on a handbag. But I think if you have that kind of spare cash it doesn’t feel crazy. I can see why people like nice hotels, cars, and beauty treatments. Because they’re nice.

FluffykinsTheFerociousFeralFelineFury · 07/07/2025 16:08

Anything with a logo on it.

GoodVibesHere · 07/07/2025 16:09

What's Labubus?

Cynic17 · 07/07/2025 16:09

I agree with most of the above, to be fair, but this is really about social class, isn't it? So some people would happily pay for school fees, opera, theatre etc but would rather be burnt at the stake than have a giant telly, tattoos, Botox etc. And vice versa.
It is not about what we can afford, but about our individual tastes.

CherryAlmondLattice · 07/07/2025 16:09

Takeaways or fast food, unless there’s no alternative.

Stressedoutmama123 · 07/07/2025 16:10

Expensive fancy cars that depreciate, as someone who is logical with money it confuses me

ComtesseDeSpair · 07/07/2025 16:11

Most of these things are easy to “get” though, in terms of being able to see why people spend money on them: they like the way these things look, or they make their lives easier, or they taste good, or they are fun, or they find joy in them. It doesn’t require a lot of insight.

The only things I don’t “get” are things which appear to only bring extra work and stress to their lives: my SIL has two toddlers, a thick pile wool rug, and an expensive, fuzzy, cream sofa, which is a pure recipe for sadness, she spends most of her time scrubbing dried Weetabix and cleaning stains off them.

DelphiniumBlue · 07/07/2025 16:11

Stuff with "designer" labels - why would you pay to advertise something? It doesn't even look nice.
Facials
Spa days

Growlybear83 · 07/07/2025 16:12

Botox, lip fillers, hairdressers, manicures, big eyebrows, fast food, private education, big weddings, big stag and hen nights, huge TVs, anything with a logo on it. But I’m sure there are lots of things I spend money on that other people wouldn’t understand.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/07/2025 16:12

Cattery · 07/07/2025 16:06

Ugly, nasty bully-type dogs. Why? There are so many nicer dogs to have x

I don't understand why anyone buys a dog or cat when there are so many waiting to be rehomed.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/07/2025 16:13

Finteq · 07/07/2025 16:04

Expensive handbags.

What do you regard as expensive?

Crumpet727 · 07/07/2025 16:13

Tattoos. Every single one makes the wearer look worse than before they had them.

New build houses. They are always poor value vs the alternatives.

Houses in cities. Far better value and quality of life available elsewhere within easy commuting distance if needed.

Cigarettes and vapes.

Black pudding. A bit niche but who decided that was a mainstream foodstuff?

Cod roe. As above.

Caramelty · 07/07/2025 16:13

Pets.

And then I got some, I adore them and they cost a fortune!

Iloveeverycat · 07/07/2025 16:16

Coffee from coffee shops.
People that can save £3 on a meal deal and say don't worry.
Not mine but when kids have just past their test and they want an expensive car. What's wrong with paying a few hundred pound for you first one.

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 07/07/2025 16:17

ShiverMeLogs · 07/07/2025 15:55

Takeaways are delicious and easy, so totally get that.

Private school I don't get though.

I pay for private school. Don’t bother with takeaways, can cook nicer food ourselves.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 07/07/2025 16:18

@Crumpet727 Henry the 8th probably along with chitterlings and larks tongue in aspic

Crumpet727 · 07/07/2025 16:18

Musicals. They are definitely a case of emperors new clothes.

OnlyYellowRoses · 07/07/2025 16:19

Buying Chugs, Labradoodles, Cockerpoos etc for hundreds of pounds.
Its an expensive mongrel and what used to be a ‘whoops’ dog!

WhereOnEarthIsMyPlanet · 07/07/2025 16:19

What's wrong with paying a few hundred pound for you first one

How safe and reliable do you think a few hundred pound car would be nowadays?

FrodoBiggins · 07/07/2025 16:19

Expensive candles

LemondrizzleShark · 07/07/2025 16:20

Cars in general! I obviously get why people have cars, but not why they spend £60k on a fairly average one just because it’s brand new and an Audi/BMW etc, when you can get an identical two year old one for half the price, and a cheaper marque for a quarter of that.

Doesn’t bother me that people do, I just wouldn’t myself. I also really really don’t understand anyone whose self-image is tied up in being a Mercedes driver not a Hyundai driver.

Auroraloves · 07/07/2025 16:20

Costa and Starbucks, just yuck!

Microblading

most expensive child day out like theme park, polar express.

ClearHoldBuild · 07/07/2025 16:21

Sun beds for tanning. Cigarettes and vapes.
