to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

A lot of beauty treatments (most of which scarcely existed when I was at the susceptible age), expensive shoes/bags, regular take aways (also something that didn’t exist when I was younger), expensive modern penis extensions cars.

OTOH I cheerfully “waste” money on overpriced tech, theatre and concert tickets and travel.

We spend spare money on what gives us pleasure - the only part which matters is that its genuinely spare. I wouldn’t borrow money or have skimped on long term savings or family needs for any of my luxuries. I don’t think I’m unusual, most women I’ve talked to about money define “luxury" money in the same way.

Fingernails, eyebrows and botox.

So you begrudge spending money on essentials?

BexAubs20 · 10/07/2025 11:08

I’m guilty of a lot of these, facials, Botox, spa days, semi permanent makeup, nails, hair, takeaways, nice meals out (have been known to spend hundreds on Michelin star restaurants) lashes, holidays etc. I work hard and only get these things if / when I can afford it after bills and things for my children. I don’t go out partying or smoke and rarely drink so they are my “treats”

things I wouldn’t waste money on; smoking/ vaping/ sunbeds, red bull/ energy drinks (basically just paying to give yourself cancer) and my big one GAMBLING I think it’s the biggest waste of money known to man and why anyone would do it is beyond me!

Your essentials are not mine.
It's a shame this thread has become defensive. There are many things on here that some people wouldn't dream of spending money on, things I would but it isn't an opportunity to have a go at them, or at least it shouldn't be.

People have said they don't understand expensive handbags/shoes for example. I am happy to spend up to £500 on a bag and £200 on shoes but appreciate to some this is excessive and to others, not much at all. Our other spend is opera/ballet - it floats our boat but not the boat of others. DH likes his dick extension car which I call the "wankmobile" - I buy something two years old and sensible and run to about 100/120 thousand miles. I also spend about £160 to £180 on my hair every seven weeks - others wouldn't but I'm not going to critise as that isn't the purpose of the thread.

Cheap ones are so bad for your lungs!🫁

Thanks for this - I didn't know that candles could be bad for your lungs.

Small man/woman syndrome. The bizarre belief that something must automatically be better because it's larger.

I'm small and this is why I've never driven a big car! I'm convinced people will watch me getting out and think 'small woman syndrome'. I'd never think this about anyone else though, just my own personal hang up.

Pricey alcohol e.g. wine that you do not drink but put on display or even more mind blowing, in a basement that never sees the light of day.

Edited

Agree - wine is for drinking! Should be stored, must be drunk (IMO)!

Lorrainedrops · 10/07/2025 18:43

Stag and hen parties, video games up to £50 a game! Bridal parties wearing embossed dressing gowns with their title at the wedding. Cigarettes/vapes, coffee shops- Costa/Starbucks, aesthetics - lips always look ridiculous with filler. Japanese hair spas, pay a fortune to have a 'sprinkler' like device wetting your hair and having it washed and brushed. Fancy restaurants that serve miniscule amounts of food for an extortionate price. You leave still hungry and crave a kebab lol. Designer bags and shoes. One broken powder compact and the inside of your bag is ruined.

People shouldn’t buy expensive cars because other people have no respect for property that doesn’t belong to them?

No people shouldn’t take up two bays.

I know someone who takes up two bays if there are no Blue Badge spaces. Which seems fair enough to me.

Small man syndrome and small woman syndrome is not really related to being small. I know tall men and tall women who have small person syndrome.

Having small person syndrome is just the belief of being small and needing to feel bigger; not actually being small.

Scratchcards! Used to work in a supermarket and scratchcards were the bane of my day! People would spend £50 or more on them, then get excited if they won a tenner!

There was a local court case where an employee had stolen £6000 worth of scratch cards his return for this was less than £800.

Ooh just thought of another one which will upset a lot of MNers. Alcohol! Just have a diet cola, cup of tea, or even better, a glass of water

Yeah but I can't get a buzz off those

My neighbour got excited when he got four numbers right in the lottery - he was convinced that he was 'getting better' at it and would be winning the jackpot in the next few weeks.

My friend works for a supermarket. This was before the restrictions of a max of ten tickets sold per transaction.

A customer won £110 on 2 cards. He then exchanged the money for 22x £5 cards. Most people would have cashed in £100 and bought £10 of cards.
He came in the next day. He won £45! Should have quit whilst ahead

They always seem to be the cars that are broken down on the motorway 😏

Because they're driven badly by maniacs.

I'm a tap water drinker but last time I tried to fill a water bottle at Bristol airport it was lukewarm and disgusting. I ended up buying a bottle of water.

TV subscriptions if you already have a TV licence. There's far too much to watch already - who needs more? (Although I know you need to subscribe for some sports coverage.)

Buying any kind of manufactured drink if you already have a tap. There is far too much to drink anyway. - who needs more?

What's on offer on Freeview is many and varied so comparing it to tap water just doesn't work.

And for specific programmes. That's why a lot of us do it.
