to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Loads of things. As an example, I walk into my local garden centre, look around the gifty bit and wonder why anyone would want 75% upwards of the stuff.

At Christmas, once they bring in all the plastic tat, that 75% becomes 95%.

Maryslion · 07/07/2025 17:20

Nails.

Just don't get it.

spoonbillstretford · 07/07/2025 17:21

Yes, owning a boat = pouring money into the sea, though it does look fun and I would like to have one. Also see: owning horses.

I don’t care what people spend money on, providing they are working for it. 🤷‍♀️

Blurrywateryeye · 07/07/2025 17:21

Private school. Unless your child is naturally clever you’re wasting your money for a handful of grade 4 and below GCSEs

Echobelly · 07/07/2025 17:23

Cars that they will struggle to afford to oay off, run and insure. I guess for some people the car they drive is an important part of their self image, but that's such an alien attitude to me, I'll just drive something that work and gets me from A to B.

spoonbillstretford · 07/07/2025 17:23

Acrylic polish/having nails done I do spend money on, just as it's the only way I've found of keeping them nice and not being tempted to bite them. They are not stupidly long though and I can still garden (in gloves) and type. After many years of badly bitten nails it gives me great joy to look at my lovely neatly manicured hands.

Strawbsplease · 07/07/2025 17:23

Unnecessary home renovations. Costs a bomb where I live.
I know someone who’s never content with what they have in their (pretty perfect) home and is always looking to spend more.
Then again, they haven’t been on a foreign holiday for 15 years! I’d not trade the memories I have from amazing family holidays which didn’t cost the earth to borrow more money for an unnecessary extension so she probably thinks I’m crazy too.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 07/07/2025 17:23

Candles.

I thought that chewing (sugar free) gum reduces the risk of cavities because it gets saliva and enzymes flowing which help protect your teeth and wash away stuck food particles. I’m thoroughly prepared to be told that this is a lie sold to me by Big Gum, though.

Big Gum requires a laughing emoji 🤣

Wow! Is there anything you CAN understand people spending money on?
You'd absolutely despise me 😂

🤣 I would never judge, let alone despise, anyone that spends money on anything on that list (personalised number plates and sex workers being the exception).
It’s just things I have never spent money on and it genuinely baffles me why anyone would.

LozzaCh0ps · 07/07/2025 17:24

Nails!

HeartandSeoul · 07/07/2025 17:24

I was expecting someone to say Jellycats (and I say that as an avid collector 😁!).

PersephonePomegranate · 07/07/2025 17:26

It's designer handbags for me. I understand spending a couple of hundred on good quality leather, but I don't really get spending more than that on something you take off and put down as soon as you've got to where you're going!

Edit: that's not to say I judge anyone with a massively expensive bag, I just don't see the appeal, personally.

But - as you'd know if you'd RTFT - many people don't send their kids to private school for academic reasons. Also, I don't really get what you're saying. It sounds like you're saying that a child has to be naturally clever to achieve anything over a grade 4 at GCSE.

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 07/07/2025 17:26

Tatoos, breast implants, destination weddings. Just big weddings full stop actually.

MikeRafone · 07/07/2025 17:28

Cars, I just don't get it - as long as its fairly comfortable and goes from A2B then great. Get the smallest car possible and least amount of fuel and car tax and away you go.

She cars are £2000 for car tax and do 20mpg

loads of takeaways every week

And loads of takeaway coffees.

EscapeToSuffolk · 07/07/2025 17:28

New cars, new clothes. Anything that takes money away from buying good quality food, which should be the top priority. I shop at Ocado but have a ten year old car and get all my clothes from Vinted.

Jane958 · 07/07/2025 17:28

Large TVs
Pouty lips

Ready meals

Huge AI holidays costing £* every summer...

Then in the next sentence saying they can't afford to save a deposit for a house...

LadyRoughDiamond · 07/07/2025 17:30

Takeaways more than once or twice a month: you may as well shovel lard and chemicals down your throat!

My in-laws spend so much money on home decor, always changing throws, cushions, ornaments, every occasion they buy tonnes of decorative items ie Easter/halloween - no little kids or grandchildren at home. The list is endless. Thousands & Thousands.

I just don’t understand!

Maybe they watch "Influencers" and their seasonal "hauls" on YouTube. I must admit that these videos fascinate me. However I watch them to marvel over all the seasonal tat that they buy from Primark, the Range, B and M bargains and one other place that I can't remember. They get all sorts of crap for Christmas, Spring, Easter, Summer, Autumn and Halloween. Mugs, door wreaths scented candles, cushions, throws fairy lights, snacks and heaven only knows what else. Where do they keep it all? does it not exhaust them doing all these seasonal "resets" and do they ever think about the environmental cost of all that plastic? I have some nice bits I get out at Christmas but the thought of doing it for every season is mind boggling.

Like when the cashier says if you pick up a drink you’ll get all of this for £3 rather than however much it is individually priced… usually a lot more

I would think that worthwhile though personally if I don't like the "deal" items, and prefer the items that are not included. Like a decent salad v a manky limp sandwich.

That's another one for me. Factory made sandwiches = usually minging.

@spoonbillstretford try the caesar wrap, or the vegetable sushi, not too "minging" 😄

Static caravans. Incredible money pit.
