to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Let people be its up to them what they spend their moneys on.
I waste a lot on temu.

Primary school aged children with full manicured nails. They can't hold a pencil ffs.

Really? Does that happen ? Add to my list above

Emmz1510 · 07/07/2025 17:42

Generally I think people can spend their money as they like.
Probably the only one I really don’t get is cosmetic surgery (apart from dentistry- that I get). It’s crazy money and a lot of the time looks worse or looks fake.

Jonesboot · 07/07/2025 17:43

For me it would be plastic surgery. My partner is American and a lot of his mates, and their wives and partners have had 'work done'. We're planning to grow old naturally, and sometimes I'm tempted to have just a little something. Then we have some people to stay or go to a social event with the gang, and I remember why I prefer the wrinkles!

Long. Straight and rarely sees any heat.

I had 2 compliments today on my hair so I must be doing something right.

Oh, fair enough. Works for you. I’d look absolutely split ends horrific without a regular trim, plus I do colour

Muffsies · 07/07/2025 17:43

I used to be a bit snarky about people who bought diamond jewellery. Why spend so much on something that looks like a bit of glass and doesn't even do anything? But I have to admit that I recently bought myself some diamond earrings (this isn't a boast, feel free to call me a fool - younger me would). I just love them, and its symbolic of me being at a point in life when I can spend a bit of money on myself after years of putting the kids first.

And at least I have something to leave to my favourite daughter-in-law one day 😅

At least 6 girls in my Y6 class last week. No rules against it because I can't imagine anyone ever thought it would happen!

Poonu · 07/07/2025 17:43

Microblading means that I don't actually have to do anything to my face for the school one or work. Moisturizer and lip balm.

OnlyYellowRoses · 07/07/2025 16:19

Buying Chugs, Labradoodles, Cockerpoos etc for hundreds of pounds.
Its an expensive mongrel and what used to be a ‘whoops’ dog!

Yes! Idiots that spend over a grand on a crossbreed have been the butt of many a joke in the circles I move in. Well they do say fools and their money are easily parted.

My DB is one of them £2k on a backyard bred cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle 🤣🤣

And my hairdresser spent £3.5k, £3.5 bloody thousand on some hideous crossbred pig faced bull thing and it died when it was 2 of heart failure.

I'll also agree with clown lipfillers and clown eyebrows although they are good for a laugh.

I live quite simply and don’t judge what anyone spends their money on.
But I recently bought myself a mini convertible and a private plate out of redundancy money.
Many may view that as a waste but it makes me so happy!
and in 12 months there have only been a handful of days when I haven’t had the roof down at all - it’s all about wearing the right clothes 😂😂

After years of company cars I bought a mini convertible when I retired, 2 years on it still brings me joy and I swear I have the roof down more than it’s up.

Cocktails. Just seem very expensive for very little

Yes, cocktails! The price per ml must be equivalent to a cup of liquid gold. Three sips and that’s £15 gone.
They are nice though.

Takeaways or fast food, unless there’s no alternative.

Nah, I'd never cook again if I didn't have to. Takeaways are fine.

I’m exactly the same. I last went to a hairdresser in 2016; the time before that was 1992, and I ended up suing the hairdresser 😆😆. I trim my own hair when it needs it, and I get regular compliments. My husband hasn’t been to a barber since before the pandemic either .

jollygreenpea · 07/07/2025 17:47

Tech, just can't comprehend why people sleep outside a shop ( for any purchase's ) to get the latest gadgets.

I realise I'm a complete technophobe and a luddite though.

IAmNotASheep · 07/07/2025 17:48

diterictur · 07/07/2025 17:33

In real life, I know many people who send their children to private school and every single one does so because they think it will mean their children do better academically. They might phrase it more euphemistically and say "better learning environment" or "fewer distractions in class" but it amounts to the same thing - that they think their children will do better than they would in state. Not that they will necessarily get top grades, but better than they would have done.

The Mumsnet thing of doing it "for the extracurriculars" is not something I have ever heard anyone IRL say...

We did. That and the class sizes along with my eldest at state spent a year teaching maths to the kid next to him. Private was the next nearest school. Although we would hav travelled to get to one tbh. Best thing we’ve ever spent money on. If people find an excellent state though and hav no kids at private I get why they might think it’s a waste of money to go private. It is after all
a lot of money 🥴.

Actually M&S works out sometimes cheaper then Sainsbury’s Asda Aldi etc…

Than. Cheaper than.

BertieBottsEveryFlavourBeans · 07/07/2025 17:49

Really long acrylic nails, I hate false nails and don't understand how people can do anything with them on.

The reason I went 3 years ago was to have my plait cut off for charity and the time before that wasnt actually to a hairdresser, it was just done by a hairdresser. They shaved it all off for charity! Haha I used to box die my own and couldn't be arsed grow it out so shaved it instead!

I just use the occasional go blonder spray now! I just wash it and leave it to dry on its own and jobs a good un!

Ladyluck22 · 07/07/2025 17:50

Excessive amounts of clothes and plastic pots to take food out of the packaging it came in to make it look pretty which is kept in cupboards so you can’t actually see it.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 07/07/2025 17:50

Getting 'work' done, from lip fillers and eyelash extensions to facelifts. I think women are sold the idea they have to look a certain way by an industry that wants to make money or of them.

The latest car/phone/sound system. Give it a year and you'll pay a lot less.

Hot tubs, decking, garden sofas. I love my garden but that's because it's full of bees and plants. I couldn't fill it with things that aren't growing.

Queenofkittens · 07/07/2025 17:50

Cannot stand the dry robe coats, absolutely awful looking and so overpriced, basically bought so people think you have money 🤣

Lip fillers are a huge no go I have yet to see nice lips having had fillers they all look dreadful

Seymour5 · 07/07/2025 17:51

Big fat unnatural lips. They look ugly, and I don’t get the trend.

anotherwordforit · 07/07/2025 17:51

Take always and going out to eat because 90% of the time I find it such a let-down these days! :( and so expensive.

Weddings, I think huge lavish affairs have been normalised, can’t believe people spending tens and tens of thousands on one day.
