to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Brand new cars

Cigarettes. It's just the dumbest thing to spend money on.

Like when the cashier says if you pick up a drink you’ll get all of this for £3 rather than however much it is individually priced… usually a lot more

Oh I see now! Thanks. So people actually refuse to take advantage of the deal? Well I never!

spoonbillstretford · 07/07/2025 17:13

I get private school where it meets kids additional needs better. If I had my time again I'd have tried DD2 at one possible school rather than online school/tutoring - though there was the possibility that we could have ended up in the same boat having spent £££££ on school.

Catsandcannedbeans · 07/07/2025 17:10

I agree, I know it’s smaller classes and all that but a good one to one tutor for a few hours on the weekend is cheaper. I am a private tutor though so I’m biased.

Mine don’t go to private school to get better exam results. They go so that they actually enjoy being at school without the constant classroom disruption, poor behaviour, lack of resources, staff who are pushed to the brink etc that they experienced at state school. It’s been worth every penny for us just to have them happy from 8.30am-4pm Monday to Friday instead of miserable! No one else needs to ‘get it’ though, as it’s nothing to do with them.

Weddings/dos, designer clothes/shoes/accessories, expensive cars/motorbikes, make-up/jewellery/beauticians/hairdressers/cosmetic surgery, holidays to expensive and/or cringe destinations, cruises, mortgages for unnecessarily big houses, designer furniture, subscriptions to multiple entertainment platforms, pure breed pets, cigarettes/vapes, tattoos, david lloyd type gyms, horses, boats, tv sets over 40’’, CDs/vinyls/DVDs, brand new smartphones/tablets/laptops/gaming consoles, Christmas presents, sex workers, strip clubs, private schools, fancy wines/spirits, house cleaners, children. And yeah, definitely personalised number plates.

Wow! Is there anything you CAN understand people spending money on?
You'd absolutely despise me 😂

languedoc1 · 07/07/2025 17:14

Far-away, long haul expensive holidays e.g. mentioned Maldives. You get the same beach and food in Spain/Canaries for much less money (and only 2-4h flight!). Never-ending home renovations - bottomless pit.

InjuryMyArse · 07/07/2025 17:14

Air in garage forecourts. Why pay 50p to pump up your tyres when there's perfectly good, free air all around us.
Just fill your lungs and blow some of that in.

Augustus40 · 07/07/2025 17:15

Umpteen pets. I know people who own 3 cats yet are on benefits. I mean just why? Or own 3 dogs yet complain they are hard up. Crazy!

Mercedesaintmycar · 07/07/2025 17:15

loads of stuff. £££ cars, tacky fingernails, designer handbags, getting the latest phone, takeaways

Mine are in a local state and it's been a disaster. If I ever win lottery, my first move would be to send them to a private.

I’ve never had my nails done though. I suppose I don’t ‘get’ people paying a fortune just to have different coloured nails!

Boating as a hobby?🤪…especially in winter!

TigerRag · 07/07/2025 17:17

Vaping

UK2HK · 07/07/2025 17:18

Labubus are all the imbecile rage in Hong Kong right now. People queue along with wasting money on claw machines to buy plushies.

Agree. We chose for similar reasons but also. More subject choices, better sports with Olympic etc sportsmen as PE teachers, excellent music facilities, drama etc. Louds of language choices, subject qualified teachers in all subjects from Prep ( age 8 ) upwards. Exciting lessons with teachers that aren’t exhausted. International exams recognised worldwide. And yes. Excellent past exam grades.

Ridiculous money to go up a hill and then wheeee down

I would think that worthwhile though personally if I don't like the "deal" items, and prefer the items that are not included. Like a decent salad v a manky limp sandwich.

That's another one for me. Factory made sandwiches = usually minging.

Santasjingleballs · 07/07/2025 17:19

ItsStillWork · 07/07/2025 16:01

Botox, fillers etc

extravagant holidays like the Maldives etc

having a new car every year

but then again 95% of my food shop is at M&S and many people can’t justify the cost of that

Actually M&S works out sometimes cheaper then Sainsbury’s Asda Aldi etc…

No sex workers here but apart from them, I’m hitting this list hard 😂

What counts as a “cringe” holiday destination?

Blurrywateryeye · 07/07/2025 17:19

“Designer” clothing, like Louis Vuitton. It’s what poor people think how rich people dress.

Icebreakhell · 07/07/2025 17:19

clothes
weddings
expensive cars
fingernails
resort holidays

Think people who enjoy boating may pick @diterictur s personal choice for the winter months.

BeesAndCrumpets · 07/07/2025 17:20

Anything, if the reason they are getting it is perceived as 'better than'.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Otherwise, enjoy the shit if it makes you happy😃

Like my little Mum, she hasn't had proper eyebrows since the 80's and microblading has saved her from having to apply a pencil every time she leaves the house - she's very self conscious without them... they look great, and make her feel done, without spending time on them. WIN, and I love this for her.
